When Karina awakened, Darren was gone, but her concern was short-lived. He 
returned shortly to the room with some rolling papers and Marlboro Reds, 
and they got high, then they fucked again. Then they packed their things 
and left shortly after an Asian voice banged on the door and reminded them 
it was checkout time. 

On the ride back to campus, they were silent for the longest time. 

"Back to reality, huh?" Karina broke the silence. 

"Kind of," Darren replied. "It wasn't serious when I suggested we rob a 
bank and kill a cop. I think we could make do with a convenience-store 
clerk. Wouldn't be as much money, but we could kill him. Have to be a guy. 
My dad wouldn't like it if I killed a woman." 

"How about a black woman?" 

"Yeah, that might be all right. He's pretty much of a racist." 

"Coach Raftery. He'd take you back, wouldn't he? I mean, `cause the 
quarterback's hurt." 

"Out for the season. That fuckin' little freshman, Hugh fuckin' Hill, 
couldn't beat himself." 

"It's OK," Karina said. "You can do it. It's fine by me. I'll love you 
whether you're a football player or -" 

"A bank robber?" 

"Yeah, but I could love you if you were just a nobody. Only, you're not. 
You're an athlete. You're not exactly the All-American boy, but you like 
playing ball." 

"Not as much as I like fuckin' you." 

"I know, and that makes me really, really happy," she said. "But who says 
you can't do both?"
