Patti's story
Part 3

Bill said, "Patti, come over here.  I want to see what you do with that
cigarette."

Patti walked over to her father, took a medium size drag, opened her mouth to
show the smoke inside, and inhaled deeply.  She then blew a long stream of
smoke through her lips.

Her father said, "Well, it looks like you know what you are doing.  If you
enjoy it, I have no complaints.  After all, both your mother and I enjoy
smoking.  It just seems a little strange as young as you are."

Bill smoked Marlboro 100s when he was home.  When driving his truck, he
usually smoked A&C Grenediers.

The next Monday morning after Virginia and Patti had breakfast and Patti sat
down to start her lessons, she took out a Marlboro Light, lit it, blew out
the first puff, and placed the filter between her lips. She took a long drag,
her cheeks hollowing in, inhaled, and immediately brought the cigarette to
her lips again.  Again she took a cheek hollowing drag, and inhaled the smoke
on top of the first drag.  She then exhaled a long thick stream through her
lips, closed yer eyes and smiled.

Her mother said, "You are really getting into this smoking thing aren't you?"

Patti said, "Yes, I guess I am.  I really enjoy this."  Actually she was
experiencing a head rush, but didn't want to tell her mother this.

Patti loved to run.  After her lessons, she would go ooutside and run for
about 20 minutes.  After she had been smoking about a month her mother asked
if she had to breathe harder or ran ouot of breath when she ran.  Patti said,
"No, I breathe fine."

Her mother told her sometimes if people smoked, it made them breathe harder
or run out of breath when they ran.

Patti never seemed to have this problem.

When Thanksgiving came, the family was invited to have dinner at Virginia's
sister's house.  When they went into Brenda's house, Patti noticed Brenda and
Fred, her husband were both smoking.  Virginia lit up and Patti asked if she
could smoke too.  Virginia explained to Brenda that Patti had started
experimenting with cigarettes and liked it and that she let Patti smoke at
home.  Brenda looked startled.  Virginia said, "Don't you remember when I was
fifteen and you were twelve that we started smoking together?  I know Patti
is a little younger, but whe enjoys it and I figured sooner or later she
would try it.  In her case it was sooner."

So Patti enjoyed a nice day visiting with her aunt and uncle and smoking.

Patti worked up to about 10 cigarettes a day and stayed at that rate for
about two years.

When she was 10, she was up to about a pack a day.  She stayed with the
Marlboro Lights.

On her thirteenth birthday, she received a carton of Marlboro Reds from her
father.  He told her now she could smoke full strength cigaretees.  When she
lit the first one, she took a deep double drag as she was now used to doing,
exhaled and said, "Wow, I like these even better."

Virginia's dream was a new house.  For all the fourteen years she had been
married, they lived in the old house that Bill had inherited from his
parents.  It was a good sturdy house, but needed occasional repairs and since
Bill was not home very much, Virginia did not like having to supervise
repairmen and try to keep up an old house. !  She convinced Bill to buy a new
house.  He said if they were going to get a new house, he wanted to move to a
different location in a different community.  So they decided to get a new
house built to their specifications.  They planned to be in it by Labor Day.
But as all plans go, it was November before they got moved.
