Amy's story Part 1 of 4 by Asiansmoker Hi, my name is Amy Ho, and this is my smoking experience. But let me tell you a little bit about my background first. I am chinese, and I was born and raised in Hong Kong in a fairly well-to-do family. I have 1 brother and 1 sister, who I get along with very well. I moved to North America in 1987 and was married with my husband Jack in 1988. The rest of my family was and still is in Hong Kong. I went to work in an insurance company shortly after I arrived in North America. It's a pretty good job, I think. I have met some wonderful people at my workplace. I even got a mortgage at the company where I work at and my husband and I bought a house. This year I turned 35 years old. I have long black hair, I alternate between wearing glasses and contact lenses and I look very Hong Kong-ish. I think you can guess how I look like, yes? I grew up, as I said in a fairly well off family in Hong Kong. We had a maid and everything there. some may say I was spoiled and I tend to disagree with them. I grew up, well, like any other good girls in Hong Kong, I never drank, never smoked, certainly would never take any drugs in my life. But until the night I went out with Jeremy, my co-worker, I never though I would have a smoking story to write. In fact he is the one that gave me this address so I can tell my story. Forgive me please if my english is not too good, for english is not my first language, chinese is. In fact, I still speak cantonese at home. As I mentioned earlier, I never smoked or drank in Hong Kong. My younger brother was a social smoker, as some co-workers smoked, but that's it. I always found it a disgusting habit for bad people, the same for drinking. Things changed when I moved to North America. My husband drank a little, so he got me into drinking beer. People still say I look funny drinking beer because I look like a chinese doll, I am 5 foot 1 inch and weigh 103 pounds, not what most people picture when they see someone with a beer in their hand. About 3 years ago I met my co-worker, Jeremy, and he always wanted to bet on sports with me. Why? I don't know, although I like watching Basketball and Hockey. One time we had a bet on who would win the NBA championship. He lost the bet and I won,!! so he had to buy me a beer at the local bar down the street. On the day before we went to the bar after work, I had a very difficult day and could not wait to leave work. We went to the bar, and although Jeremy didn't believe that I drank even up to the time I ordered a beer, ( no one in my whole company believed I drank), I drank the beer very quickly (by that time, I think I was drinking 1 beer a day after work at home). We talked and talked and we had a great time, so I ordered another beer and paid for Jeremy's. As time went on, I drank a third beer and I was getting a buzz from the beer. I think about 30 minutes before my second beer, 2 ladies sat at a table just beside ours. The tables were about 2 feet away from each other and the girl beside me was smoking. Ugggh! If there was one thing I had about going to a bar was smelling the smell of smoke. It was disgusting. By the time I drank my third beer though, it didn't smell as disgusting. I think I must have been a little drunk. For some reason, I kept watching the blond caucasian girl beside me and saw how she smoked. I had been to hundreds of bars or restaurants in my life and saw thousands of people smoke before, but not like her. For some reason I cannot explain, I could not keep my eyes off of her. It wasn't a lesbian thing, at least I didn't think so, it's just how she smoked. Even Jeremy said something to me about this. "Hey Amy, why do you keep looking at that girl? " Jeremy asked. "Umm.I don' t know...nothing!!!" I replied. "It seems to me like you are watching her smoke..don't tell me you smoke too!! I never thought you drank until about 1 hour ago, and you smoke too?" Jeremy asked. "No, I have never smoked before" I replied. "Never?..not even one?" Jeremy asked again. "No...never" I replied once more. "Not even one puff?" Jeremy asked. "No...not even one..why are you so curious?" I asked. "Well, it's because, the way you look at her smoking, it's like you miss it or something." Jeremy said "No, I never smoked before" I replied. "Did you wanna try one?" Jeremy asked I was shocked!!! No one ever asked me if I wanted to try smoking before. They knew my stance on it...so, just for fun I said this: "Oh..yeah..but..I forgot my cigarettes at home" I replied. Jeremy thought I was serious and said something I would never forget. "Well, why don't you ask her for one, she won't mind giving one to you..just offer her a quarter or something." Jeremy said. I knew now that he was serious, so I had to say something. "But I don't know how to smoke?" I replied "I'm sure it's easy, just ask her..if you don't, I will!!" Jeremy replied I was thinking at what my next move should be. Should I ask her for a cigarette? Why would I ask her, I hate the smell of smoke..but why did she look so good smoking? Was I drunk? end of part 1 |
