As the year went on, however, Julie's situation outside of school was
worsening. She didn't know Charlie anymore.  The cute, bashful guy she fell
in love with was now different.  She began to question his faithfulness as
she witnessed Amy, Lisa, Tiffany, and Christy coming downstairs with their
hair ruffled and obvious signs of physical activity more strenuous than any
of the usual work they did around the house.  Julie became more observant
at this point and noticed that Charlie was now groping and fondling the
other girls behind her back, the way he used to do to her.  Finally, Julie
confronted Charlie and he admitted to having sex with all four of the girls
on numerous occasions.  Julie was surprised that she felt virtually nothing
about the breakup.  She shed a couple of tears, but had quit loving Charlie
for the past couple months as his personality evolved.  She didn't even
quit the job or grow to hate Charlie.  She convinced herself that access to
the cigars was more important to her than her boss or co-workers.  She also
felt some personal responsibility for changing Charlie and her friends by
her relentless taunting the previous summer.  At that point, she felt she
had corrupted Charlie's wholesome image just to make her girlfriends
envious, and also enticed Amy and Lisa to try to one-up her by showing her
that they could get her man and every other man they wanted.  For these
reasons, Julie harbored no feelings of resentment towards any of them.



All five girls continued working for Charlie full-time once again in the
summer.  But Julie was the only one to return for a sophomore year of
college.  Amy and Lisa had flunked out and decided their lives were full as
Charlie's maids.  Julie was sensible enough to realize that the gig with
Charlie could end at any point when Charlie got tired of them, so she knew
she needed an education to fall back on.  Julie, Amy, Lisa were still
friends, but the connection they had before working for Charlie was gone
forever, which saddened Julie.  The girls continued to sleep around, and
Julie hoped that they could change their dangerous lifestyle before it was
too late.  

As she arrives on campus for her sophomore year in early September, she
immediately recognizes the campus smoking rate to be just as high, if not a
little bit higher, than the year before.  She looked ahead on her way to
class to find two girls from her floor last year walking towards the same
building.  Julie took a double-take when she noticed the girls were smoking
small cigars instead of cigarettes.  Fully aware of the new campus smoking
policy, the girls walk right past the outside ashtray and into the
building, still smoking their cigars.  When Julie arrived at the ashtray,
she was stunned to see it was almost one-third filled with small cigar
butts, along with mostly white cigarette butts.  Julie glanced behind her
while taking a puff on her own cigar to find a group of girls approaching
the building.  About half of them were smoking cigarettes, while the other
half were smoking cigars.  Julie smiled as she took a final drag off of her
cigar.  Although she would like to take credit for the introduction of
cigars to the girls on campus, she realized that a young man named Charlie
with a dream and a whole lot of money was the one really responsible, and
that reason definitely made the whole experience with Charlie worthwhile.
Julie squashes her cigar, which was by far the largest cigar butt in the
ashtray, next to the smaller ones and enters the building, aware she'll be
able to light another cigar whenever she wants to.
