Donna's story
Part 3/4

Then it was Jane's turn.  She did now want to embarrass herself in front of
her sister, so she took a small puff, opened her mouth, inhaled, and exhaled
a small stream throough her lips.

Barbara said, "That's the way, Jane.  Just do small puffs until you get used
to it.  Liz, you look like you have been smoking for some time."

Liz said, "No, today's the first time."

Barbara said, "How about you, Donna?"

Donna said, "First time for me too."

Barbara said, "You look like you are enjoying it."

Donna said, "I am."  She did not tell anyone about the warm and wet feeling
between her legs.

For the next couple of months, they gathered at Jane's house, smoked, talked
a lot of girl talk, went swimming sometimes, to the mall sometimes.  Donna
and Liz graduated to Marlboro Reds, and Jane switched to Salems.  They each
were smoking about a half pack a day by August.  Anita didn't come by much
anymore.

On August 1, Donna's father Jack announced he was being transferred to a
small town.  He was an executive with the electric company and was being put
in charge of an electrical generating station about 100 miles away.

Two weeks later, they moved.

On the first day of school, Donna attended her morning classes and went to
the cafeteria for lunch.  Since she didn't know anybody, she sat by herself.
Shortly after she sat down, she heard a voice say, "Can we join you?  Hi, I'm
Maxine, This is Kathy."  Two very attractive girls sat down opposite her.
Maxine had long straight brown hair and big brown eyes.  Kathy had long black
hair and very blue eyes.  Maxine said, "We saw you in chorus and wanted to
say hi and welcome."  They chatted through lunch and Donna said, "I've got a
car if you would like a ride home from school."

Maxine perked up instantly and said, "Sure, I'd like that."  Kathy said she
had to go work in her family's furniture store.

When the got in the car after school,  Donna pulled out a pack of Marlboros,
lit up, took a deep drag, inhaled deeply, and exhaled.  She said to Maxine,
"Want one?"

Maxine said, "No thanks, I don't smoke."

Maxine and Donna became almost inseparable after that except when Maxine had
a date, or could find a way to get ahold of some alcoholic beverages.  Maxine
liked to drink.  Donna would drink occasionally, but seldom got drunk.  Donna
was a good student.  Maxine would rather play.

Donna did well in all her classes, but after a  week or so, was beginning to
feel some withdrawal from nicotine in the period before lunch.  This was
geometry class.  A couple of guys in the class always brought cans of Skoal
and one fellow named Tom always had a pouch of Red Man.  The teacher, Mr.
Lyons, didn't seem to mind, and in fact, one day pulled out his own can of
Skoal, and took a small pinch.  He explained that he was a nicotine addict
too and since there were only seven students in the class that even though he
could not let the students smoke in the classroom, he could understand and
sympathize with wanting to satisfy cravings the best way they could.  Donna
began borrowing a pinch or two of Skoal and once in a while some Red Man from
Tom.  She could handle it all, and no one thought it was unusual that a girl
was chewing tobacco.
