    "Was your mom upset?", Karleen asked. "To a certain extent, I think she
always knew I'd start. She was more upset about the fact I was only 11 years
old.", Amy continued. "I got sent to my room and in about 15 minutes my mom
yelled up for me to come down to the kitchen. There was seated my grandmother,
mom, and my three aunts and for once none of them had a cigarette in their
hand. My mom said there was nothing wrong with a person smoking, of course
this was 27 years ago, I wonder what she'd say now. But she didn't think an 11
year old girl should be making an adult decision. So all these smokers decided
that the best medicine for me was to smoke the rest of the night with them.
When one of them lit up I would have to light up. When they took a puff, I had
to take a puff. Suffice to say that for the rest of the day I smoked
non-stop." "That had to be terrible", Karleen said. "For the first couple it
was, but I got used to it pretty fast. I figure that since I'd been exposed to
smoke all my life that I was more tolerant of it. By the end of the evening I
was looking forward to the next time someone lit up a cigarette. My mom
realized that her plan was backfiring and sat me down and asked me if I still
wanted to be a smoker. I of course said yes and then she said the normal
things about getting hooked but I convinced her that I really wanted to be a
smoker. She talked to dad and they decided I could smoke 5 cigarettes a day
until I was 16 then I could do as I wished." "That's a great story, I still
can't believe you smoke though.", Karleen said emphatically. "I smoke and
don't plan on quitting, that's a fact. Its too much a part of my personality
now, plus I enjoy the hell out of it. I do feel hypocritical at times when I
counsel my patients to quit. I always say in my best doctor voice, You know
cigarettes cause heart disease, etcÉ.. and the whole time I'm wishing I could
be having one. Of course my patient is thinking the same thing. So tell my
your starting story" Amy finished.
    "I'll fill you in in the restaurant, we're here.", Karleen noted.

    Karleen didn't hestitate when the hostess asked "smoking or non-smoking".
"Smoking, please", Karleen said proudly. "That felt good to say, this is my
favorite restaurant because they still have a smoking section." Amy smiled
backed and the two women were seated in a booth right next to the non-smoking
section. They both lit up and from the other side of the partition they heard
a derogatory remark muttered. Amy suddenly got a devilish grin on her face and
said to Karleen, "Watch this, I'm going to have a little fun." Karleen watched
as Amy took two of the biggest drags she'd ever seen and then sent a large
plume of smoke over the partition towards the anti-smokers. They both could
hear muffled coughs and Amy whispered, "Come on girl, let them have it. This
is our chance to make their lives uncomfortable." Again the grin crossed Amy's
face and Karleen imitated her clients double drag and sent an equally large
dose of the evil second hand smoke across the partition. Within 5 minutes the
girls had repeated this about 10 times until they heard the angry diners
request to be moved to a table far away from the rude smokers.

    "I love doing that, I know it's probably not too smart but I get tired of
the world revolving around non-smokers", the doctor said. "My luck they'll be
the first ones to walk into my new office and they'll remember me." Karleen
who was grinning from ear to ear said, "I just wish one of them was my
ex-husband." "I take it he didn't appreciate your smoking", Amy surmised. "Not
at all, I couldn't smoke in the car and I was only allowed to smoke in
kitchen. He was a real pain in the you know what.", Karleen stated. "I swear
if I ever get married the guy is going to be a smoker, or if he doesn't he's
one of those men who gets turned on by the site of a pretty women smoking. I
could get really creative with my smoking if I knew the guy was getting off on
it. I'm sorry, I shouldn't have said that.", Amy blushed. "No I don't mind, my
mom taught me that if a women was going to smoke she should be attractive
doing it. She may not have said it but I knew what she meant. I spent quite a
bit of time in front of a mirror when I first started perfecting my style.
Unfortunately I picked a guy who didn't appreciate my time and effort.",
Karleen said.

    "Speaking of starting smoking, I spilled my guts. Now it's time for you to
do the same young lady.", Amy demanded with a grin. "Young lady, I haven't
been called that in awhile!", Karleen laughed. "Lets see, how and why I
starting smoking. " Luckily the waitress came for their order, this gave
Karleen a chance to think back 30 years to her senior in high school. Could it
really be 30 years? Had she even gone one day without a cigarette since then,
or even less than a pack a day for since college?
