Part 5

After seven months in the Plexiglas cage, Linda was smoking eight packs of
Pall Malls a day.  Her chest hurt like hell in the mornings and she coughed
all the time, but she continued to smoke.  As a matter of fact she found her
self-feeling better after the first morning pack.  Her after dinner pack was
the best of all.  She was hooked.  She knew it and Dr. Blacklung knew it.  So
why wouldn't he just give her a carton and let her end this thing?

Two months later the doctor handed her a carton through the window but took
one pack out and put it on the electronics console.  Nine packs thought
Linda.  She thanked the doctor and lit up without hesitation.

June 19th was the anniversary of Linda's disappearance.  Peter marked it with
popcorn and a video.  Linda had been declared legally dead two months
earlier.  He was free to date or even re-marry.  Every one would understand,
but he wouldn't.  He still loved her and he would wait for as long it took
even if it meant waiting for his own death.

Linda didn't know it was June 19th when Dr. Blacklung handed her the full
carton of Pall Malls.  She cried tears of joy when he didn't open the carton
and remove the ransom pack.

He sat down in front of the stage and smiled as Linda lit the first Pall Mall
from the carton.  Her looks had changed dramatically from her first day in
the cage.  Back then she was a pitiful excuse for a smoker.  She was so
muscular and strong- so disgusting.  He admired her naked body as he watched
her chest expand with rich unfiltered smoke.  She wasn't fat by any means but
she wasn't muscular either.

During the first couple months in the cage, Linda had tried keeping in shape
by doing pushups, sit-ups and running in place.  But Dr. Blacklung never
worried.  He knew she would give up her exercise regimen as soon as the
tobacco had time to work its magic.  He was right.  Linda now preferred
smoking to working out.  

She knew it too and wondered if she'd be able to quit once she was free.  She
wondered whether or not she wanted to quit.  Also, what had become of Pete
and Tammy?  Her husband would never stand for the smoking so she knew she'd
have to quit, but first things first.  She had nine more packs to go.
