Chapter 7: Like Daughter, Like Mother

"Can I have a puff?"

Sara wasn't sure she had heard her mom's voice correctly, but she looked up
to see her mother's hand poised just above the ashtray. She must have looked
blank, because Michelle repeated her words again.

"Sara, honey... can I have a puff of this?"

Sara couldn't believe her eyes either, but this time there was no mistaking
the question. Her mother wanted to have a puff from her cigarette! Sara
managed to nod her head, and Michelle picked up the B&H and brought it to
her lips. Sara saw a sight she hadn't seen in years and had never expected
to ever see again as Michelle began to draw on the filter and the end of the
cigarette glowed brightly. Her mom eventually withdrew the cigarette from
her lips and opened her mouth to reveal a dense ball of smoke, which Sara
then saw disappear down Michelle's throat. She heard her mom breathe in
deeply, then after a few seconds, saw the smoke escaping from her mouth and
nose as Michelle made a satisfied sound.

Michelle wasn't sure what had caused her to suddenly want to take a puff on
her daughter's cigarette, although she knew that Sara's words had a lot to
do with it. Whatever it was, it brooked no resistance and she decided to let
it have its way. She was surprised at the taste after so many years away
from it, but the sensations when she inhaled were amazingly familiar and
instantly exquisite. It was as if she had never stopped smoking as she
slowly exhaled smoke through her nose and mouth. She suddenly remembered the
intensely pleasurable sensations of smoking as they once again introduced
themselves to her. Her entire body seemed to tremble as a wave of enjoyment
swept through it, and she felt herself flushing as she allowed herself to
enjoy the pleasure before replacing the cigarette in the ashtray.

Sara stared at her mom incredulously, and Michelle seemed a little
embarrassed by her moment of weakness. "Sorry, dear," she said, "I just
don't know what could have gotten into me. I guess I had to see what it was
like after all this time. Don't worry, I won't ask again," she said,
regaining an air of superiority once more. Inside, though, she was engulfed
in a storm of mixed feelings and confusion. She had loved the sensations of
that single puff. It was as if the smoke had instantly destroyed all of the
beliefs she had developed over the past few years the instant it entered her
body, and it was all she could do to avoid taking another. Her mind swirled
with guilt and self-doubt but she did her best to keep it invisible to Sara.

Sara picked up the cigarette and took a long puff of her own. As she
inhaled, she thought to herself that she absolutely needed to see that
again. Something told her suddenly that she needed to get her mom to smoke
again if she was to succeed in breaking down Michelle's attitude problem
that had been threatening her family. Her little speech and taken out a lot
of it, she knew, but she needed a clincher.

They sat at the dining table for some time longer, chatting cordially but
somewhat superficially, and Sara refilled their cups again after about 20
minutes. She reached for her B&Hs once more and extracted one from the pack.
As she lit up, she looked at Michelle and saw that her mom's eyes were fixed
upon her, seemingly entranced. Sara looked back at her and smiled
mischievously. She removed the cigarette from between her lips and held it
between her thumb and index finger. Turning her hand around, she extended
her arm in Michelle's direction, saying devilishly, "Have one, mom."
Michelle's look moved from Sara's face to her hand, but Michelle was
otherwise motionless. She continued to stare at the cigarette, the smoke
curling from the end in a mesmerizing dance. Sara encouraged her in almost a
whispered tone. "Go ahead, ma. It's all right. I can tell you really want
one. C'mon, mom, smoke with me. You'll love it."

Almost as if she was hypnotized, Michelle saw her hand reach out and take
the cigarette from Sara, as if something else was controlling her. Sara
immediately pulled another out of her pack and quickly lit up again. Michele
sat motionless, looking at the cigarette in her hand before Sara began to
softly say, "Mom, look at me. C'mon, let's have a puff together," as she
brought the cigarette to her lips and began a long pull. Michelle did as she
was directed and placed it between her lips. She began a slow, deliberate
puff and inhaled the cool smoke deep inside her. It felt every bit as
wonderful as the first time, and seemed to awaken her from her reverie. She
exhaled slowly, then after a few seconds took another puff, longer and more
forcefully.

Sara watched with a satisfied smile as her mother inhaled the second puff.
She had gotten her to smoke again, and something told her it wouldn't be the
last time, either. "Nice, isn't it?," she dared to ask, and Michelle looked
at her, now with a sheepish smile on her face. Sara continued, "See, it's
not so bad. Maybe you and me can have one together now and then."

"Maybe," Michele replied quietly. All of the things she loved about smoking
when she first had started were now back in her mind, and she knew she would
have a hard time pushing them out if she smoked much more of this cigarette.
She pushed the head of the cigarette into the ashtray and knocked the ash
from it. Her intention had been to crush it out, but something seemed to
stop her. She manicured the end thoughtfully for a moment, then suddenly
brought it back to her lips and took another long pull. As she swept the
puff deep into her chest with a slow inhale, she felt the cool smoke begin
to fill her lungs and the sensations were electric. That did it.

"Oh, dear God...," she murmured, holding the smoke in her lungs and closing
her eyes, enjoying the pleasure as years of anti-smoking attitudes were
flushed from her system, before slowly exhaling. Michelle cleared her throat
and looked at Sara, slightly embarrassed. "You devil! You knew, didn't
you... I shouldn't be doing this... but these are nice, aren't they? I'd
forgotten. Maybe I'll have just this one with you, OK?"

"Sure, mom," Sara said with a smile. She watched as Michelle continued to
puff on the cigarette, and knew somehow that it wouldn't be her last. She
was proved right later that evening when Michelle asked for a puff from
hers, then another, and finally decided she would just finish it. Sara went
to bed that night feeling extremely satisfied, believing that if nothing
else she had broken down some barriers, and maybe that as a result she had
done something that might help the family situation.

Michelle lay in bed much of the night, tossing and turning, thinking about
what Sara had helped her realize. There was no escaping the conclusion that
she had reached earlier in the evening. After several hours of brutal
reflection, she decided that starting tomorrow, things would be different.
She finally fell asleep without bothering to set the alarm for the next
morning like she usually did.

Sara got up the next morning and was surprised to find Michelle still in
bed. Normally her mom was the first one out of the house for her
early-morning aerobics workout, so this was a surprise. After Sara made
coffee and was well into her own early-morning routine, Michelle finally
emerged from the bedroom. "Did you oversleep? You missed your class," asked
Sara, as her mom poured some coffee for herself.

"I can afford to miss a few," Michelle said with a smile, sipping her
coffee. "I think I'm going to change my schedule. I have a few things to
take care of today, anyway," she said, as she watched Sara take a long drag
on her second cig of the day. "Honey... would you mind if I had one of
those?," she asked, pointing at the B&Hs on the table.

"No, go ahead," Sara replied, a little surprised. Michelle lit up and
inhaled with a look of sheer pleasure on her face. She had always loved
smoking first thing in the morning and now she remembered why. "Is this
going to be a habit with you from now on?," Sara asked curiously.

"Who knows? I might want to have one now and then. But I can tell you that
you better get used to things being different around here... I'm going to
change some things starting today, sweetheart. First thing, I'm going to
resign from most of those groups that I've been spending so much time with.
I've decided that they really aren't for me anymore. It'll let me spend some
more time here with you and your father, and after that, we'll see how
things are."

As the day went on, and helped by a little prompting from herself, Sara
could see that "now and then" was quickly turning into most of the time for
Michelle. By mid-afternoon she finally seemed to realize that she had
crossed the line. "Oh, what the hell," Michelle said as she went to take
another of Sara's cigs, her 5th of the day. "Honey, I may as well face
facts... these things have got me," she said, without a trace of
disappointment in her voice. "I think I might as well start smoking again.
Could I have a pack from your carton until I can get to the store?"

Sara fetched her a fresh pack, and by the end of the day Michelle had smoked
a dozen times. The next day she went to the store and bought two cartons,
one for Sara and one for herself. By the end of the week, her old habit had
returned with a vengeance, and Michelle was smoking almost as much as Sara.
While she found that amazing in itself, even more so was the fact that she
had truly enjoyed just about every minute of it. It was as if by admitting
that she needed to smoke she had finally allowed herself to be happy with
herself for the first time in years.

When Bill returned on Friday night, it was to a household with two women
with pack-a-day plus habits living in it, one his beautiful young daughter,
the other, the girl he had married whose habit had been rekindled. When he
walked through the door, Michelle greeted him in a way she hadn't done in
years, and when she kissed him he could smell and taste a strong tobacco
scent that he hadn't noticed for a long time. She soon revealed her habit to
him and began to tell him about some of the changes she had instituted while
he was gone. He was shocked by what he discovered when he returned, but
happily so, and Sara just winked at him when he asked how it all had come
about.

Over the next couple of weeks, Bill was overjoyed to discover that Michelle
had truly started to change. She no longer criticized him like she had, and
their sex life had been rejuvenated, although Bill wasn't sure if at least
part of that wasn't his own doing from the excitement he felt watching
Michelle abandon herself to smoking again. More than that, though, she
slowly began to seem more and more like the woman he once knew, concerned
with the well-being of himself and Sara, taking the time to make sure they
were happy, while still taking satisfaction herself from doing just that.
She continued her exercise classes, though now in a different group at a
different time, explaining to Bill that if she was going to smoke, she had
better try and keep herself in shape. She found her exercise more difficult
now, but stuck with it and she was fascinated to discover that even when she
was badly winded after a hard workout nowadays she could still crave a
cigarette. The aerobics helped open up the airways in her lungs that her
smoking tended to constrict, and she found that inhaling deeply on a
cigarette after one of her exercise classes felt incredible, just like when
she had first learned to inhale as a teenager. She began to wish she could
light up in the locker room, and soon took to going out behind the exercise
center immediately after a class, still sweaty and hot, to smoke before
taking a shower. This was just one aspect of the new Michelle, along with a
much more tolerant attitude about things in general and a seemingly
rediscovered sense of contentment. All in all, Bill knew that things had
turned a corner for them, and if they continued along this same path the
troubles they experienced would be a thing of the past.

There was one last loose end that Kim and Sara wanted to tie up now. They
had always found the tension between their moms to be uncomfortable, and now
that Michelle had changed back to her old self they began to try and bring
them back together. Kim tried her best to soften Linda up by telling her the
stories Sara related to her about how her mom had been transformed, and
Linda slowly began to relent. Finally, she agreed to invite all of the
Mackenzies to a cookout they were having to celebrate the 4th of July, and
the girls hoped that that would do the trick. Sara knew that Linda Petersen
would probably be a little cold unless Michelle made an effort to redeem
herself and she tried to coax her mom into being at least a little contrite.
Once she had told Michelle why Linda felt the way she did towards her, and
confessed that she had been smoking herself back then and had probably been
the cause of the original blow-up, Michelle agreed that she would try and
set things straight. Things had been working out so well within the family
since she had realized her mistake that she thought she might as well try to
mend a few outside fences too.

Soon after they arrived Michelle took Linda aside and began to speak to her
quietly. The girls watched as their mom's faces each became more animated,
warmer and friendlier, until finally the two of them gave each other a quick
hug and headed back to join the others. As they each accepted a drink from
Hal, Michelle and Linda both lit up cigarettes as Linda looked on with
surprise, not knowing Michelle had resumed her habit. Later on in the
afternoon, all four ladies began to make preparations for the cookout as Hal
gave Bill a tour of the house and grounds. Hal had picked up a box of La
Gloria Cubanas to celebrate a large contract award, and he and Bill were
each enjoying one as they walked around the backyard. Looking back towards
the house, they saw Linda and Michelle standing side by side, talking and
laughing as they set up provisions for the barbeque, while Kim and Sara were
doing the same as they made themselves busy setting the big picnic table
they were using for the occasion.

Linda lit the barbeque using her cigarette lighter and closed the cover to
let it get hot. The men just looked at the scene for a moment as Linda lit
Michelle's cigarette, then one of her own. Taking the cue, their daughters
did the same and Bill and Hal puffed silently on their cigars as they
watched the four ladies all lean casually against the rail of the deck,
chatting and laughing, before each began to inhale deeply on their
cigarettes, and then eventually exhale plumes that combined into a huge blue
cloud that was carried by the breeze towards them.

"Nice place you've got here, Hal," Bill said finally.

"Yeah... I'm a pretty lucky guy," he said, looking at his beautiful, sexy
wife and lovely young daughter enjoying their cigarettes.

"Damn right... me too," Bill said reflectively as he observed the scene.
Michelle had never looked better to him, and Sara was a stunner now,
especially when she had a cigarette in her fingertips. "Almost lost it all,
but that's passed, thank God. One of these days I'll tell you that story...
you might be surprised by the part you guys played in it. But never mind,
I'll fill you in some day. Just look at that up there, will you?," he said,
gesturing towards the deck with his cigar. "Isn't that maybe the most
beautiful sight you've ever seen? What a great-looking pair of families!"

They watched transfixed as first Linda, then Kim, performed their now
regular double-pump inhales, the smoke seemingly permeating every part of
their bodies. Bill almost unconsciously muttered a subdued "wow", and Hal
looked at him quizzically. Bill looked back somewhat sheepishly, red-faced,
before saying, "Sorry, Hal... I just couldn't get over the way that wife of
yours smokes... and your daughter too, for that matter. Quite the lovely
pair. Hope you don't mind."

"No, no, that's quite all right," Hal replied, suddenly appreciating that he
was in the company of a fellow aficionado. "Tell you what... later tonight,
what say we teach the ladies how to appreciate one of these?," holding up
the La Gloria with a sly grin. "Linda likes the odd puff but she's never had
a whole one for herself. Might be kind of fun. Think the girls might like to
have a cigar?"

Bill broke into laughter. "Yeah, I think they might. God knows they're all
so crazy about smoking... yeah, I think they just might enjoy that a whole
bunch! Me too, for that matter."

The barbeque wasn't the only thing that got hot that night in Lakewood.
