Erica's Lear Jet landed at the small airstrip in upstate New York where a
stretch limousine
awaited her. As the chauffeur opened the door for her, Erica noticed there
was already a
passenger in the spacious rear compartment. Erica climbed into the rear
seat as the stranger
introduced herself as Tiffany from Louisiana. Erica, believing that she
might not get to smoke at
 LTS School nervously took out the last cigarette from the only pack she
brought with her. As
she lit up Tiffany gave a disapproving glare. Erica, seeming not to notice
or care, continued to
take long, deep drags. As the limousine approached the huge, intimidating
wrought iron gate at
LTS school, Tiffany exclaimed, "My gracious, just look at this place!".
LTS consisted of a large,
Vanderbuilt looking main building and several smaller buildings and a
stable, at the center of a
seemingly endless expanse of well manicured hedges, flower gardens and
ornate fountains. As
Tiffany and Erica entered the main entrance and proceeded down the long
corridor, they were
struck by the large photos which lined the hall. Tiffany seemed to
recognize many of the figures,
which included former first ladies, the wives of corporate giants, and
other noted women of
distinction in entertainment, and politics. Tiffany pointed out that all
seemed to be smoking and
carrying a leather LTS cigarette case, just like her mom's. Erica took a
closer look and realized
that it was just like the one her mother had carried since she can
remember and like the one her
sister Annettete began using after her semester at LTS. One of the photos
was of Erica's favorite
rock star, holding a long cigarette in one hand and an LTS cigarette case
in the other, posing
with Lady Seville herself.
Soon, all of the new students were shuttled into a large cafeteria and the
pairs of roommates
were called out. As fate would have it, Erica and Tiffany were roommates.
Then the lady gave
first night instructions, "There's only one rule the first night, no one
smokes unless both smoke.
Cigarettes will be provided by calling the front desk. At LTS we only
stock full flavor, 100's or
longer, so be creative. You will both get a star for every cigarette
smoked, less then three is a
demerit. Do you understand?". Erica thought for a moment then blurted out,
"Hey, that's not fair.
My roomy doesn't smoke! Put me with someone who does.". The instructor
shouted back,
neither do any of the other roommates of smokers, that's the point,
dearee.".
After receiving several large books on etiquette and proper manners,
Tiffany and Erica settled
into their room for the evening. Erica, now hurting for a cigarette began
to plead with Tiffany to
try "just one". Tiffany, realizing Erica's need, reluctantly gave in and
the call to the front desk was
placed. They agreed Benson and Hedges might be a good cigarette for
Tiffany, a virgin smoker,
to try first. Erica knew that it was a smooth, mild cigarette, as she used
to sneak Annette's years
ago. While nervously waiting for room service, Erica paused for a moment
and reflected "so this
is what Annette meant, about my roommate counting on me...". Tiffany's
first attempt at smoking
went well, although Erica realized it was her job to teach only the
mechanics, and not impose her
smoking style on Tiffany, that would be Lady Tonya's task. By the third
and final cigarette of the
evening, tensions were high, as Erica resented having to plead with
Tiffaney just to smoke and
Tiffaney, feeling frustrated that she might fail, harbored resentment as
well.
By the next evening, both ladies entered the lavish auditorium, each
proudly sporting their quota
three stars, and took their place at their assigned table. Soon, a string
of speakers took the
stage, each extolling praise for the life changing influence their LTS
education has had. Liz
Peterson, wife of Brock Peterson, CEO of Dynatech, told of the life long
connections and
networking she has enjoyed. She then introduced Monica and Becky DuBoise,
the
Dente'Blancha model. Everyone stood and cheered, recognizing her face
immediately. By the
end of the evening, all eyes were in tears, as a since of sisterhood began
to blanket the
candidates. Next, the lights dimmed as loud rock music blasted and laser
lights darted about.
The feeling was electric as one after another, high profile New York
fashion models paraded out
onto the runway, all smoking, all carrying LTS cigarette cases. Lady Tonya
provided the
comment, highlighting not only their designer garments, but also of their
smoking style.
By the time Erica and Tiffany returned to their room both seemed
emotionaly spend. Tiffany,
now reverting back to her heavy Louisiana accent, confessed to Erica,
"Please help me, I want
to be the best LTS lady I can be. I think we can earn five stars tonight,
just be patient with me.".
Erica, not one for sentiment, took Tiffany's hand in an uncharacteristic
gesture, and said, "why
don't you make the call this time honey, I know I could sure use a
cigarette about now, how
about you?". Tiffaney eagerly dialed the now familiar extension and
requested Marlboro 100's.
Erica, though pleased with her selection, as it was the brand she normally
smoked, asked
Tiffaney for an explanation. Tiffaney replied, "I noticed that you smoked
Marlboro in the
limousine on our ride in. I thought I could try Marlboro this time.".
Erica said, "That's thoughtful
of you, maybe next time we'll try Virginia Slims 120's, since I noticed
you commented how
stylish that one model looked tonight smoking VS120's". Both smiled as
room service brought
their cigarettes. This time, Erica noticing that Tiffaney for the first
time seemed almost anxious to
finally light her cigarette and take that first fulfilling drag, commented
reassuringly "You know
Tiff, I think we're going to make it, you'll see."
