Maybe Just Once
Part 2 of 2

She didn't disappoint him in the slightest. As soon as she'd turned the key
she asked him to light a cigarette for her. Although he wasn't a cigarette
smoker- he'd indulged Nancie now and then but not very often- he was glad to
do it. Soon she was driving down the road, gripping the wheel with her left
hand, which was also holding the cigarette. She smoked with such an easy way
that he found himself wondering what had ever made him think this might be a
bad idea.
Lyssa also had an easy smile, something which reminded him forcibly of
Nancie, who'd lived life with a wry smile for a companion.
She talked quite a bit on the drive home. About life, about little things,
and enough about herself that Kellen felt he might just be getting to know her
without the least feeling that she was self-absorbed. It was pleasant, her
young sultry voice and the smoke from her cigarettes filling the cool night
air. He satisfied himself by mostly listening.
That and he stole a few kisses when the road permitted.
"I never expected to be taking you home tonight, you know," he finally said
after a short silence.
"You thought you'd put in your three dates, get what you needed from me, and
call it a day, right ?"
Kellen nodded, although when she put it that way it sounded almost unsavory.
"Can I ask why ? I mean, I don't think I'm god's gift to the male gender, but
I'm not exactly a leftover either."
At first all Kellen did was sigh. He was afraid that what he was about to say
would break the moment. Shatter it.
But he wasn't going to say much she didn't know. Just remind her of what he
hoped and didn't hope would remain in the background.
   "You're twenty-five, I'm thirty-nine. And I'll be honest. Viewson is a great
place, but people are people and office politics, even in the lab, can be
murder. You and I, well, you know- it's sexist and chauvinistic- or maybe
these days, with gender relations what they are, just elitist, but no one is
going to give me an hard time for-"
He was fumbling for the right way to put it. She brought that lovely
cigarette-holding hand of hers off the wheel to inhale, and all he could think
about was how he was usually forced to watch this from the outside- what
people like him called a `sighting', yet here he was, maybe, he thought, as a
red Camaro roared by, being part of a sighting as a bystander rather than a
voyeur, when she used words he'd rather she'd not.
"Reaching down. While everyone will say I'm trying to sleep my way to the
next level. Am I right ?"
"Yeah. It's bogus, it's wrong, but I'm like fourteen years older than you
and-"
She didn't reach for his hand or his face.
She aimed much lower, and with great success.
"I don't care right now. This is just a first date, Kellen-"
"And I am taking you home," he countered, wanting and not wanting to be
serious. Now he remembered why he didn't date.
"Well, don't send any company wide e-mails and I won't have your name
tattooed on my ass just yet. Now tell me the truth, did you ask me to drive
because you haven't had sex in a while and you're wiped out or because you
like watching a pretty woman smoke and drive ?"
"Guilty on both counts," he said, and the tension was broken .

As soon as they walked in the door Belinda came running down the stairs. She
stopped three steps from the bottom when she saw Lyssa.
   "Dad ?!"
Kellen read the question. `Are you going to score ?'
Not much got by his little girl these days.
   "Lyssa, meet my daughter Belinda."
The older woman stepped forward and exchanged a handshake with her soon-to-be
student. Belinda could smell the sweet scent of smoke on her and decided that
she could hardly wait to smell like that herself. It reminded her of Illisa.
"Pleasure to meet you, Lyssa. Was Dad as nervous after he picked you up as he
was before ?"
Lyssa shot Kellen a look over her shoulder and he deftly changed the subject.
"What's up, Belinda ? You came running down the stairs like you've got big
news."
"Can I go dress shopping tomorrow, Dad ?"
He scratched the back of neck, feeling as though his daughter had already
taken one his credit cards from his wallet as she usually did when she went
shopping. It came back a little more worn each time.
"Dress shopping ? I have to mow the lawn, trim the bushes, and start thinking
about who I'm going to draft in the fantasy football league." He threw that
last one in because his daughter had beaten him out for first last year and it
still stuck in his craw. "Besides, it's the middle of summer ? What could you
possibly want with a new dress ?"
"Illisa is taking me to the Summer Dance. I don't have anything that fits
since I lost that-"
"Five pounds ?" Kellen asked, thinking like a man, not understanding how much
of a difference five pounds could make.
Lyssa saw her opportunity. "I'd be happy to take you, Belinda. I love to go
shopping." She winked at Kellen. "Especially with other people's money."
Kellen knew right then that he was in trouble, but he wandered off anyway
towards the kitchen to find a beer as he let the two women meet one another
and talk about spending his money.

They got up early and had breakfast together- Belinda was so excited that she
not only offered to cook omelets, but did a spectacular job of it. Soon Kellen
found himself outside in the yard doing chores he'd never actually meant to
take on. No, they usually fell to Belinda because, when it came down to it,
he'd long ago found out that he could be just a little bit of a bully about
things like chores. It might not be right, but it was what being a parent was
about.
   Not today.
As Lyssa and Belinda were walking towards the mall, Belinda asked the
question that had been on her mind all morning.
"Did dad tell you I was a lesbian ?"
Lyssa had been expecting `So did you and dad have sex ?' but Belinda seemed
smart enough to know the answer to that one already.
"Well, if he hadn't, I think the fact that you're going to the dance with a
girl named Illisa would have been a tip-off. But yes, he did. Do you know why
?" Lyssa looked at her watch, saw it was still short of ten, and then said
"Hold that thought. I'd like to have a cigarette before we go inside. Is that
okay ?"
"Of course. I could watch you smoke all day."
"That runs in the family. Now-"
"Why did dad tell you I was a lesbian, Lyssa ? I mean, it's not like he's
ashamed of it, but he doesn't usually go around bragging, either."
"Well, maybe it's time you found out why we came to be here together. Do you
think your dad would normally skip anything- even shopping- to mow the lawn ?
He told me last night that he hates to mow the lawn."
"I don't know how he'd remember since he hasn't done it in five years,"
Belinda said sarcastically as Lyssa lit up. Watching her draw deeply on the
cigarette was enough to make Belinda go hot and moist on the spot, and she
found herself hoping that Lyssa would decide she needed two or three
cigarettes before they started shopping.
"Well, your father came to me because he knew I smoked and asked me to teach
you how. I understand that in about ten days, you get to start."
"And you thought- well, it's obvious when you spend like five minutes with
dad that he's attracted to just about any woman who smokes, so-"
"I hate to admit it, but yes, I had to ask." Lyssa took another spectacular
inhale. If this was the woman dad had hand-picked to teach her how to smoke he
loved her more than she had guessed.
"At the risk of sounding like I'm bragging a little, I don't think your dad
is attracted to just any woman who smokes. Do you ?"
"No. But it's a big deal with him. I can see why you'd ask."
"The question now is `Are you ready to give it a try ?'"
"Well, I was going to wait until I turned sixteen, but-"
"You do have a big date tonight- with a girl who smokes. If I were you-"
Lyssa passed Belinda her cigarettes and lighter and started the instructional
process.
It turned out to be a lot of fun.

It was after two when they finally got back from the mall. Kellen noticed
that Lyssa had put the top down, so it was easy for him to see as the car
pulled into the driveway that both the women in the car were smoking. And
laughing and talking and generally looking like they were having balls of fun.
He looked back at the large pine bush he'd been trimming for the last half-
hour- it had refused to trim evenly despite his best efforts- and tried not to
resent them.
One thing which made that a bit easier was the fact that for some reason
Kellen had expected this to turn out like a comedy show, with his car coming
back piled high with boxes from posh mall stores. He saw nothing at all in the
back seat, although just looking at them made him wonder what their sweat had
done to the expensive material.
   That brought a smile.
Belinda swung herself out of the car. She was wearing a pair of sunglasses
very similar to Lyssa's and holding a fresh cigarette in her right hand. She
looked unbelievably cute like that- suddenly not a little girl or even a young
woman. She was just a woman. Still, there was a big difference between holding
and smoking. As if to answer to that distinction, she brought the cigarette to
her mouth and drew on it, then turned towards the trunk, smoking trailing
behind her as she walked with the cigarette held down by her waist.
It was a good hold, but not as refined as Lyssa's.
Well, that was what instruction was all about.
As Belinda unloaded the trunk, Lyssa walked over to Kellen and kissed him,
her mouth swarming with smoke.
"I see you had a very willing student."
He looked around Lyssa's smiling, agreeing face to watch his daughter. She
was taking two bags from the trunk. Needing both hands, she was holding the
cigarette in her mouth, doing it in a way which was perfectly attractive. It
had always amased him that some women looked incredible with a cigarette held
in their mouths that way while others looked-
He put the thought out of his mind. Thinking about an unattractive woman
smoking or a woman smoking unattractively could put you off the fetish for
hours or even days. Although, he reminded himself as he turned his attention
back to Lyssa, that wasn't quite as likely right now. She was more than
capable of putting him right back on it again.
Having closed the trunk, Belinda was now holding her two bags in one hand and
the cigarette in the other. Although she had always looked a little bit like
her mother, the resemblance was much stronger now. Much sharper, perhaps. And
more than that- she looked happy, as though she was fulfilling something. But
those two bags caused some disquiet in him.
"How much am I out ?"
   "Two twenty."
"You only have two bags," he said incredulously.
"I needed shoes, Dad. You know how much shoes cost, don't you ?" she teased.
"I know how much my shoes cost. I guess with yours I had no idea."
   "Dad-"
Kellen reached out and gave his daughter his A hug, which she returned. He
noticed that she was careful to turn her cigarette away from him as so not to
burn him.
She always had been a quick study.
As they broke the embrace, she turned serious. "I have an hair appointment in
half an hour. Is this any chance that you'll let me take the car ? I know I'm
not really supposed to drive without supervision but it's only a mile and an
half and-"
Lyssa shot him an `I know what we can do with the time' look and he relented.
"Just be careful," he said, but she'd already grabbed the keys and was half
behind the wheel of the car.
As she pulled out of the driveway- with a reasonable amount of care, Lyssa
pulled a silver cigar tube from her purse.
   "Look what I have-"
   "I don't smoke cigars, Lyssa."
She laughed. "It's not for you, silly. It's for me. If you think you get hot
watching me smoke cigarettes, wait `til you see me with this in my mouth. I
guarantee you'll never look at cigars the same way again."
   She was right.

Belinda didn't light up when Illisa picked her up. She had spent the
afternoon very carefully plotting how to best introduce her friend to the fact
she'd started smoking and something Lyssa had done had given her a great idea.
Illisa would stop outside the school just as Lyssa had outside the mall,
wanting to get in one last cigarette before the dance, which was obviously no
smoking.
By the time they pulled into the school parking lot, Belinda was sweating
from nervousness. She was pretty sure that Illisa would react more than a
little positively to her changed state, but there were other people who might
not understand. The strangest thing was that some of the other kids and
teachers thought it was great that she was the only one of the four girls in
the little group who didn't smoke, as though there was something absurdly cool
about not smoking.
They walked slowly towards the building, experimenting with holding hands.
Belinda rather liked it. That feeling of flesh to flesh contact was unique,
unreproducable in any other form. They garnered looks, some positive, others
not, and Belinda was suddenly glad that she had her exhibition as a smoker to
worry about because it had pushed the sexual politics into the background.
"Hold on," Illisa said, tugging Belinda to the side of the main doors. "I
want to have one last cigarette before we head in."
Belinda let go of Illisa's hand and opened her purse. Without saying
anything, she pulled her cigarettes from the purse, extracted one, and lit it
exactly the way that Lyssa had shown her. As soon as it caught she drew on it
and then rescued it from her mouth with a graceful, slow left hand. She arched
her wrist and held the cigarette up by her ear. Smoke twined from the tip and
then she pursed her lips into a seductive `o', allowing smoke to pour from
between them.
"When do you start smoking ?" Illisa asked, her eyes bulging to a point which
Belinda thought must have hurt.
"Today. I thought it would be a nice addition to our first date."
Illisa's mouth opened and smoke billowed from it. "You do look hot. Oh boy.
I'm not sure that kissing you is going to be enough today. Let me see you do
that again."
Belinda obliged and then quickly realised that her date was not wearing a bra
under her dress.
"Your hair, that dress, and a cigarette in your hand. One or two dances, some
spiked punch, and we'll need to find a place to be alone."
Belinda inhaled again. "Hold on to that thought," she said while managing to
hold the smoke in her lungs, another trick Lyssa had taught her.

Forty-five minutes later the girls had each taken three cups of punch which
had been spiked with a wicked mix of vodka, rum, and gin. Any worries they'd
had about getting flack for showing up as one another's dates was now long
gone. Just about everyone had been supportive, even friendly about it. In
fact, the response had been almost entirely supportive. It wasn't, after all,
as if either girl had stepped out of the closet.
"Where can we go to make out and smoke at the same time ?" Illisa asked.
"Not your car. They have volunteer parents cruising the parking lot. And
there's only one place in school where you can smoke- unless you want to make
out in the bathroom."
"You're right. The teacher's lounge. But it's probably locked."
"Didn't you here ?" Belinda asked, wicked smile on her face. "Ever since they
caught Ms. Duprau and Mr. Bailey making out in there, the lock doesn't work."
"Cool. Let's just hope we're the only ones to think of it."
It was a long walk to the lounge, which was on the other side of the school.
Once they'd taken a couple of darkened hallways, lit only by the glow of
emergency lights, they felt comfortable lighting up, and Belinda found herself
wishing that school was always like this, that smoking wasn't so unacceptable.
There was something too perfect about walking down the eerily lit hallways
hand in hand with Illisa, enjoying physical contact and smoke.
There was no one in the lounge. By unspoken agreement they didn't turn the
lights on but instead went over to the couch, the only light to guide them
coming from the end of their cigarettes. They sat together, legs intertwined,
holding hands and smoking until they finished their cigarettes together. Then
they finally kissed, a first kiss which was deep and hard and altogether
precious.
Their dresses were summer pieces, the shoulder straps slipping away easily.
Immediately they were down to their underwear, and they began petting one
another, taking their time, learning one another's bodies as they kissed and
twisted into a single being. It was part sexual and part exploratory, and the
dance was left behind.
It was Belinda who finally slid Illisa's panties down her legs and she
replaced that cotton covering with her tongue. She began to do something that
she had only read and dreamed about, but judging by Illisa's reaction, she
must have been doing it right. Illisa bucked and writhed and moaned- careful
to keep the later quiet. Shortly before her orgasm, she lit a cigarette, and
as her climax turned her flesh to goose bumps, she offered it to Belinda, who
took it gratefully and began smoking, understanding that it was hers now.
Illisa had no more experience in the matter than her new lover, but followed
the example which Belinda had set, using her tongue and her fingers in a way
that she had often dreamt about. As Belinda began to melt for her, Illisa
found herself enjoying the pleasuring as much as being pleasured, and when
Belinda's own orgasm took her, she felt vague disappointment that it was over.
Lighting another cigarette, Belinda drew deeply and then passed it to Illisa.
Just then, they heard footsteps coming down the hall. The exchanged invisible
looks of panic and began dressing with a speed quite unlike their first
attempts earlier in the evening. Just as the door opened, Illisa lit a
cigarette of her own.
It was Mr. Kivlin. He reached for the light switch, nearly blinding them- at
first all Belinda could see was his grungy beard and thick mane of brown hair.
"What are you girls doing in here with the light off ?" he asked, his tone
almost hopeful sounding, as though he wanted them to say they'd been having
sex. The look on his face was that of the boy staring at the half full cookie
jar. Or was it half-empty ? Belinda laughed to herself. He wasn't going to
found out, not tonight. But just seeing them in here like this might give him
something to think about tonight.
   "Just smoking, Mr. K."
   "With the light off ?"
"We didn't want to draw attention to ourselves," Belinda said, adjusting her
disheveled dress strap before it could fall off her shoulder.
"Well, when you two finish those cigarettes, go back to the dance. And if you
see Kelly Hayes, tell her I'm looking for her, okay ?"
They said they would, even though they imagined his idea of looking for a
teenage girl might not be as wholesome as was prudent.
"Did you see the look on his face ? He was practically coming in his pants
thinking about the two of us having sex together," Illisa said.
"Why not ? I'm all hot just thinking about it. You were wonderful."
"I'm giving you a passing grade, too. I suppose we should go back to the
dance, though, shouldn't we ?"
Belinda thought about that, drew on her cigarette, and then smiled. She spoke
through her sultry exhale.
"Kiss me again first, and then we can talk about it."
They did not go back to the dance right away, and this time no one
interrupted them when they were done.
