NET DECEPTION

Part 1

   "Fifty-eight, fifty-nine...sixty" Jennie said as she completed her 60
sit-ups for the day. Usually she did 50, so today was a good day. It seemed
everything was going well today, she got 95% on a test and went for a 50
minute run today, instead of the usual 30 to 40 minutes which she did right
after school, changing from her school uniform to her running gear as soon
as she got home. She was physically fit, winning Grade 11 Athlete of the
year last year, and was always at or near the top of her class.

   Now that she finished her run, it was time to hit the books and do as
much homework until her mom called her for dinner. Then she'd do more
homework after dinner untill 9 or 10PM, which left her an hour or so to
chat online with friends. This was her daily routine, and she hardly veered
for it. She could always count on at least 1 person to chat with her
online, Ada Cheung.

   Jennie Lee and Ada had been friends since the second grade. They grew up
in Repulse bay, a nice picturesque part of Hong Kong. Don't let the name
'repulse' fool you, its just like a resort on the French Riviera. They'd
been attending the same school ever since Jennie's family moved into the
area in 1994.

   Jennie got the highest marks her first year at that school (grade 2),
dethroning Ada who had the highest mark in grade 1. Ever since then they've
been pushing each other to do better, a little competition that Jennie
often won, but they remained great friends. It was also convenient for them
to be friends as they lived about 500 yards from each other.

   During their junior high school years, they both experienced growth
spurts, and by the age of 16 Jennie was half an inch taller than Ada.
Jennie had larger breasts than Ada too, and she weighed 5 pounds more than
Ada. Although they continued to be good friends, Ada resented always
finishing 2nd to Jennie, however Ada did win the computer science prize
award to the best student in Comp. Sci for grade 11 (form 5), and the lead
actress in the year-end school play in grade 11 which Jennie had tried out
for, so there was healthy competition there. Together they usually swept
the school awards.

   Jennie also excelled in track, winning the school's 400m championship in
February 2004, while in grade 12. She was also training to run a marathon
early next year.

   One thing neither of them had done by grade 12 was having a boyfriend
yet. It's not that they weren't attractive, coz they were, but so much time
spent on studying and physical education, it didn't leave them much time
for social activities. There was even a rumor around school that both of
them were lesbian lovers. That rumor was quite untrue and spread totally
due to jealousy from others students.

   The rumor persisted as neither of them had a boyfriend by the middle of
grade 12. This all was about to change. By March 1994, there was this one
boy; he looked about 17 or 18, who followed them home from their school
almost on a daily basis (Ada & Jennie attended an all girls school, the
young man attended a boys school, just down the road)

   Both girls knew the boy was interested in Jennie, as he kept asking for
her name, which they refused to give him. But somehow he found out.

   "Jennie, Jennie" the young man said one sunny afternoon. Both she and
Ada turned around.

   "How do you know my name?" Jennie asked.

   "I asked one of your classmates, I just had to know it. I wanted to know
what beautiful name belonged to your beautiful face," he said, and Jennie
smiled. This got Jennie hooked and she fell for him that easily, but she
didn't want to let him know right away. They talked briefly and Jennie
declined an invitation to go for coffee with him. Nevertheless, he
continued to wait for her after school, hoping to talk with her, hoping to
date her. She refused.

   A week later he was so persistent and gave her flowers. She could no
longer push him off and agreed to date him, but only if Ada came along. He
agreed.

   They met in a coffee/tea shop and Jennie was falling for him badly maybe
it was because he was her first love. While sharing interesting
conversation, he shocked them both by removing a pack of cigarettes from
his jacket.

   "Do you two mind if I smoke?" he asked.

   "You smoke? ewwwwww" Jennie said.

   "Ewwwww...." Ada said and looked over at Jennie. Both of them were
stunned by this sudden revelation that he (Paul) smoked. Neither of them
had ever smoked before, nor did they want to try it, as the smell made them
turn away often.

   "What's wrong?" Paul asked.

   "Ewwwwww, Smoking gives you cancer and yellow teeth!" Ada said.

   "Yah and you get wrinkles and damage you lungs forever and you die
early!" Jennie added.

   "Don't smoke around us, we don't want second hand smoke!" Ada added.

   "Yah Ada, let's go...I don't want to date a smoker." Jennie said and
both girls got up and left. Paul didn't say a word. As the girls were
walking home, they were both irritated.

   "Can you believe that guy? How could I have been attracted to him?"
Jennie said.

   "I dunno, he seems to like you, too bad he smokes, it ruined
everything." Ada responded.
