Part 6

Nicole soon returned to school for the new term. She left the house on her
first morning dressed, in her mother's opinion, more like a tart than a
school girl. Nicole cared not a jot as she clattered along in her heels.
Lighting a cigarette almost immediately she drew stares of disgust from older
women but more than a few admiring glances from the men. She met up with Lisa
and Rachel and the three continued on their journey surrounded by the fog of
smoke from their cigarettes, almost chain-smoking to build up their nicotine
fix before the lengthy period in class. Nicole may have become a heavy smoker
but despite this and her new image she was still determined to do well in
school. 

Many pupils who had not seen Nicole since last term were astonished at her
transformation. She received lectures from many of them and some of the
teachers who heard of her newly adopted habit. Nicole ignored them all and
was very glad to head for the boiler room at the interval to join her friends
for a further bout of heavy smoking. A big surprise for Nicole was
Stephanie's presence there. Her former friend had split up with her boyfriend
over the summer and the stress of this had led her also to try smoking. Like
Nicole she had taken to the habit very readily and now also recognised her
addiction. Still dressed in more conservative uniform, and stood well below
the heels brigade in her sensible ballerinas. She was rather a strange sight
among the other female smokers, all conforming rigidly to the bad girl tarty
image. Nicole was glad to welcome her friend again and resolved to go
shopping with her the next weekend.

Despite phone calls to their exasperated parents the four girls became very
regular visitors to the back of the boiler house. All were regularly punished
when caught indulging in their habit. By now, though, all were two pack a day
smokers and felt frequent cravings when denied their pleasure for too long.
At lunchtime they were spotted easily by the haze that ascended from the
girls smoking like chimneys. All were now very popular with the older boys
and Nicole soon began a relationship with the equally heavy smoking Marcus.
Her boyfriend's father was a company executive with the country's largest
cigarette manufacturr and he was able to keep Nicole and her friends well
supplied. Nicole spent a lot of time now at her boyfriend's house where all
members of the family were very heavy smokers. From then on Nicole was more
or less chain smoking. Despite the persistent cough which she now had, her
habit had taken total control and Nicole gave in very willingly...
