Roads Of Passage

Part 3

"No!"  Pandora shouted, startling her friend in the car.  The rain descended
onto the windscreen, forming little pools on the blades of the windscreen
wipers.  

"Had a bad dream?"  Daisy asked sarcastically, whilst chewing on a Humbug.  

Pandora could hear the pattering of rain hit the car roof like bullets as
they sat parked at a gas station.


"Rose is in the station, payin the guy for the petrol."  Daisy commented

"What about Max?"  Pandora asked, yawning and adjusting her spectacles.  

"Getting some fresh air, I think."  Daisy commented innocently.  

Meanwhile, Rose approached the front desk of the small Station Store, her
eyes greeting the Serviceman's back behind the counter.  The man was
inspecting, and packing cigarettes onto their shelf as Rose stood patiently,
awaiting his attention.

"Um...Excuse me."  Rose asked quietly.

The serviceman turned to greet his customer - his right brown eye meeting
Rose's as she dwelved into her purse, withdrawing a credit card.

"Gas Machine number...." Rose muttered as her eyes were drawn to a gruesome
scar spread across the man's left cheek.  The scar seemed to begin its
formality from below the man's left eye and extended towards the right side
of his upper lip.  The man's other eye was misty white - probably the result
of the scar in some way, Rose thought.  The man's white hair and heavily
wrinkled face added to unorthodox appearance as a service operator.  Whilst
frightening, his face seemed familiar to Rose, but she could not place this
sensation.  The gold name badge on his uniform titled Fate.

"Number miss."  The man spoke softly, awakening Rose from her observation.  

Rose completed the transaction and tred carefully back to the car, continuing
momentarily glances at the elderly operator on the way.  Walking out of the
station booth, the rain seemed to startle her, bringing her back to the
objective of this trip.  Entering the car, Rose brought the engine back to
life when she realised her friends were missing a body.

"Where's Max?"  Rose asked impatiently - Time was pressing on.

Daisy departed from the car and stretched her body, embracing the returning
feeling her legs provided.  Daisy began scoping the whole station, whilst
raising her jacket hood to protect her from the cold rain.  

"Where are we heading?"  Pandora asked, whilst grabbing the groceries bag,
looking for rejuvenation after her nap.  

"We took a wrong turning.  I just bought a map from the store to see if we
can get back on track.  I also phoned Lucy and told her we may all be a bit
late tonight."  Rose said, brushing the encounter in the station under the
carpet.  

Feeling her senses beginning to reawaken from the soda she was now drinking,
Pandora removed a cd from her sleepover bag under the passenger seat.
Metallica began blasting from the car speakers, piercing the ears of Rose as
she scanned the paper map, looking for an alternative route.

"There you are!" Daisy smiled as she found Maxine outside the Ladies toilet
room, cowering for shelter as she lit a cigarette.  

"You scared the shit out of me!" Maxine responded, feeling like a naughty
schoolgirl in trouble.  

"We are already to hit the road again...Can you just put that thingy out and
get movin?"  Daisy asked, her blue eyes begging for appeasement.

Maxine moaned to herself in reluctance as she exhaled another waft of smoke
which evaporated into the sky above.  No-one understood her true nicotine
love, therefore they dismissed it and looked down upon her.  However, her
current need for nicotine was now beginning to take second fiddle to another
need growing between her legs.

"Tell you what Daisy, I need to run to the loo.  Would you just hold this
whilst I do my business?"  Maxine pleaded with her cigarette.
