CJ entered the small apartment and was immediately struck by the pleasant
aroma of cigarette smoke which now laid thick and heavy in the air. She
fished through her purse for her pack of VS120's, then, noticing that the
pack was empty, crushed the pack in
 her hand and proceeded to reach for the ever present carton on top of the
fridge. As she extracted the last pack from the carton, which she had
purchased only three days before, she commented "Rachel, I'm so proud of
you. I know you have been smoking nearly
two packs a day for at least the last couple of months. I only wish I
had the time to enjoy smoking so much.." as she eagerly stripped the
cellophane from the fresh new pack. At this moment, Sandy seized the
opportunity to finally admit her new smoking
habit saying, in a hesitant voice, "Well, actually mom, Rachel had a
little help. You see mom, I have been smoking lately too, I mean, me and
Rachel both smoke now, I mean..". Now, CJ interrupted Sandy, looking her
square in the eye, saying "Are you trying
to tell me that you are a smoker now Sandy?". Sandy took a deep gulp,
then, in a show of brazenness stated "Yes mom, I guess I am. You see,
Rachel and me have..". CJ interrupted again saying "Are you trying to tell
me that you want my permission to 
smoke in the home, just like Rachel?". Sandy continued, now almost relieved
at CJ's understanding stating "Oh yes mommy, that is what I'm saying.
Could I please, please smoke in the home, just like you and just like
Rachel. I really want too. This is definitely
what I want to do. Please, can I?". CJ, now almost blushing at
Sandy's candor and persistence replied, "Of course you may honey. I'm so
proud of you. You know smoking is an important step toward becoming a
young lady. Here Sandy, I want to offer you
a cigarette.." as she shook a cigarette loose from her freshly opened
pack. Sandy looked at Rachel, almost overcome with tears of joy and pride
at this point, and extracted the offered cigarette. CJ even offered her a
light saying "Now, I want to see my
young lady enjoy her first cigarette. Rachel, why didn't you tell me about
this?".
Sandy took a long, deep pull from the VS120 and casually sat down at the
couch as CJ brought her an ash tray from the kitchen. It was clear to
Rachel and to CJ as well that little Sandy was now a smoker. That evening,
Sandy smoked two more cigarettes be
re going to bed and could hardly sleep, looking forward to joining her mom
and Rachel the next morning at the breakfast table. That morning, Sandy
emerged from her bedroom half believing it was all a dream, that is, until
she saw the ash tray CJ had set
at her place at the breakfast table. She skipped her usual breakfast that
morning and was content to sip a cup of coffee at the table, while
enjoying a cigarette, while CJ and Rachel ate theirs. Just as CJ and
Rachel finished their breakfast and were rea
ing for a cigarette, Sandy was ready for her second. All three lit up,
passing the lighter between them, in a kind of family ritual. Sandy felt
very relaxed and comfortable now, more so then she had felt in a long
time. CJ finally said "I think I need to
start picking up two cartons when I do my marketing for now on.". Sandy,
exhaling a long stream of cigarette smoke toward the ceiling, said "Yea, I
think that would be a good idea, after all, I'm sure that I will begin
smoking more, now that I have permission
and all." . CJ, taking a long drag herself, smiled and then
commented, "I am hoping you will honey. After all, cigarette smoking is a
very positive and wonderful experience for a young lady and I hope you
will develop a good, healthy habit, one which
 you can enjoy for life time.". Sandy, now smoking confidently, took
another drag from her cigarette saying, "Gee mom, if I had any idea how
good smoking felt, I would have started sooner. Why didn't you get me
started years ago mom?". CJ smiled and sai
 "Because honey, you would not appreciate it as much as you do now, would
you?".
