Writers Note---Those that enjoy a good science fiction story know that they
need to suspend their beliefs of the real world and allow for the possibility
of things that are out of the ordinary. You will need to do that when you
read this story. With that being said, while the science fiction stuff is
mostly a product of my imagination, many of the smoking scenes are in fact
based on real encounters and sightings that I've experienced throughout
my life. Some have been modified to fit the context of the story but others
remain mostly intact as they actually occurred. Lastly, when reading this I
suggest that you pay attention to the timeline as it is critical to how
you'll draw your conclusions over the story's ending. My email address is

I hope you have as much fun reading this as I did writing it.

SISTERHOOD OF THE SMOKER BABES-THE SMOKING WAR CHRONICLES

CHAPTER 4 - FALL 1973
She hated gym class. It wasn't that she disliked sports, she actually
liked them. But Gorton Junior High School gym class was ruled by the boys who
always ended up putting themselves in the best positions when they played
flag football. That might work for most girls but not her because she was
better than most of the boys. She was faster and more coordinated. It would
be one thing if she sucked and didn't care or know any better when they stuck
her on the line during the flag football games. But she wasn't stupid. And
junior high gym class wasn't fun. In fact it was pretty ridiculous as far as
she was concerned.

She loved music. Her favorites used to be teen idols like David Cassidy
and Donny Osmond but lately she found herself more into artists like Deep
Purple, Rod Stewart, The Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd. She still liked David
and Donny but the other music was good too because the songs had meaning and
told stories.

As she crossed the street and headed towards the football field in her
green and yellow gym uniform with her best friend Liz, twelve year old Erin
Williams was concocting a plan. A plan for her and Liz to go to the upcoming
Rolling Stones concert in Providence.

'Oh my god I soo want to go to it but my dad will never let me." Liz said

"We could tell them its Donny Osmond and I don't know, steal the
newspapers or something. My dad doesn't follow that stuff anyway, he probably
doesn't even know who the Rolling Stones are," Erin said while giggling, her
long blonde hair was anchored by a red, white and blue head band.

The girls arrived at the field where the rest of the class had already
assembled. Two of the bigger boys in the class, Todd Martin and Kevin
Wilkins, had appointed themselves captains and were picking teams. Both Erin
and Liz groaned when they were put on different teams but high fived each
other before they went their separate ways on the field.

The game was a typical junior high school flag football game. Much to
Erin's chagrin, the boys played all of the key positions like running back
and wide receiver while the girls for the most part were assigned to block
each other on the opposing offensive and defensive lines.

The gym teacher, sensing this, ordered Martin and Wilkins to switch some
of the positions around. For one play Erin lined up at receiver and was
covered by Liz. The girls laughed and playfully shoved each other all the way
down the field during one play but the ball was thrown to the opposite side.
The girls went back to their respective huddles.

Todd Martin, the quarterback on Erin's team, called the play - he wanted
to go deep to Jimmy Birchfield on the left. As the huddle broke he grabbed
Erin by the arm. "Hey, go out five steps and turn right. If you're wide open
you can run all the way down the sideline, you can catch right?"

"Yeah, I can catch" Erin snapped but she wasn't really pissed off. She
was friends with Todd and she knew he was busting on her.

Todd took the snap and dropped back to pass. He looked left for
Birchfield but he was covered. Erin on the other hand was wide open. And the
ball was coming her way. And she could sense it, what Todd said. There was no
one behind her, nothing at all but empty space. She could run for days.

She didn't see him until it was too late. The ball was inches away from
her fingertips when he flattened her while trying to break up the play, and
they both crumpled to the ground. She felt him on top of her and tried to
shove him off.

"GET OFF OF ME," she screamed at the small dark haired dorky kid who was
still on top of her. The dark haired kid said nothing as he rolled himself
off her. Erin glared at him for a second and started to say something to him
but was interrupted by Liz.

"Erin, oh my God are you all right?" Liz asked, her eyes wide with worry.

"Yeah, I think so other than that damn kid nearly killing me." Erin said.
She looked over at the dorky kid and noticed that he seemed to be staring at
her. "Hey Martin!" she yelled to Todd. "Next time throw it harder, I was wide
open!"

Later that day, while sitting in English class Erin felt a slight
stinging pain coming from her left forearm. She looked to see where the pain
was coming from and saw a small red spot that was covered with a small dab of
dried blood. She licked her finger and started to wipe it clean and noticed a
small cut the size of a pinhole and briefly wondered if she'd been stung by a
bee. Figuring it happened during the collision she shifted her attention back
to what the English teacher was saying. But she was having trouble
concentrating for some reason. Her mind had been wandering all period and for
some reason she was feeling very nervous.
