Smoke & Mirrors
Part 16: The Fight:

Suzanne and Phil had slept soundly after their passionate night of
lovemaking. At about 9:00 AM, the light streaming into the room had awakened
Suzanne. She was slightly confused as her eyes scanned the room. She realized
that she was not in her own bed. As she rolled over, her eyes found Phil's
face, made rugged by the stubble that had grown overnight. He looked so
handsome and peaceful. She had to blink twice, to make sure that she wasn't
dreaming. Then it all came back to her. She was no longer a virgin. She could
feel the slight soreness in her vagina. She smiled, as she felt totally
fulfilled as a woman. She would never again be the same. Her virginity was
now a thing of the past. Despite the pain, the sex had been great. She knew
it would get better. She smiled as she looked at the sleeping hulk breathing
heavily beside her.

It was at that moment she realized that Jill might be worried about her.
Probably she would have figured out what happened, but it would only be right
for her to call and tell her that she was all right. She carefully crawled
out of the bed, trying not to wake Phil, whose breathing continued to be slow
and deep.

She found the telephone, in the living room and dialed her apartment. The
phone only rang once. Jill's familiar voice answered, "Hello?"

"Hi, it's me. You must have been up. I didn't wake you? Did I? I just wanted
to let you know that I was okay." Suzanne said.

Jill smirked as she said, "I can just imagine how okay you really are. How
did it go last night?"

Suzanne cooed, "It was just wonderful, just wonderful-. I'll tell you all
about it when I get home."

Jill, felt slightly guilty as she held back the bad news. Finally, she
realized she should get it over with.

"Suzanne, I have some bad news for you," she said with a serious tone.

"What is it?" Suzanne responded, as she was brought back to reality.

"Well your mother called about a half hour ago looking for you." Jill said
slowly.

"Oh my God!" Suzanne nearly shrieked. "What did you say?" Suzanne said
frantically.

"Oh I just told her, that you were probably at the store or at the library,
or somewhere. I think she believed me." Jill said slowly.

"I had better call her right away," Suzanne said nervously.

Jill paused then said slowly, "Suzanne? Does your mother know I smoke?"

"Well, maybe I didn't mention it. Why do you ask?" Suzanne said with a
guarded tone in her voice.

Jill said smiling "Well- when I was talking to her on the phone- I really
needed a cigarette, so I just had to light up. She seemed to get a little
hostile, less friendly, after that. That's all."

Suzanne was taken aback. How could Jill have been so stupid? Her mother
would not approve. She knew that her mother would want an explanation. She
wasn't sure how she would handle it-

"Well, I have to get off the phone and call her right now. I'll talk to you
later," she said rather abruptly.

"Okay good luck. I'll see you later," Jill said as she heard the telephone
click without one word of goodbye.

Suzanne was now agitated and nervous. She needed something to calm her down
it right now. She knew what she wanted. A cigarette. She quickly went to the
bedroom to find her cigarettes. As she reached for her pack, she saw Phil's
cigarettes sitting there. Maybe I should have one of his, she thought. Her
body consciously told her that it needed nicotine. She quietly took his
package, and tiptoed out of the bedroom carefully closing the door behind
her. She nervously put one of the full flavored cigarettes in her lips. Her
hand shook nervously as Phil's lighter came to life. She inhaled deeply.
Ohhhh- that's much better. Her head started to clear. She then noticed the
soreness in her chest, as she coughed slightly to clear her throat. She
quickly looked in her pack of VS's. She was surprised to see that there were
only seven cigarettes left. My God, she had smoked nearly two packs of
cigarettes yesterday. She knew that she had smoked a lot, but couldn't
believe that she had smoked that many. She quickly took another deep drag
trying to rationalize her indulgence. Oh, well it was worth it. Wasn't it?
She smiled. Yes it had been. She had passed into womanhood. It wouldn't have
happened without her cigarettes. It was a small price to pay. Now how would
she deal with her mother?

She dragged deeply a few more times, not even thinking to exhale, simply
breathing the smoke normally, enjoying the calming effect rather than the
process. She was feeling better, with every drag. Her mind had finally
cleared enough to make the call. She started to organize her thoughts as she
took one more drag of the full flavored cigarette. She slowly crushed it out
in the ashtray. She felt better. Now to get this over with. It was 9:10 AM.
She dialed her mother's number.

One ring-. another ring.

"Hello?" Her mother answered.

"Hi Mom. It's me Suzanne," as she heard her raspy voice say these words, she
knew that she had made a big mistake. All the cigarettes last night and the
one she had just finished had left her voice very deep and raspy.

"Suzanne, Where were you when I called? What is wrong with your voice? Have
you been smoking?" she let out in a tirade, not allowing Suzanne to respond
to any of the questions.

Suzanne's head whirled with the last remark. Her mother had quickly put two
and two together. She had never been good at lying, and she knew that her
mother's instincts were always on the mark. Should she lie?

She paused, then gathered up her courage and spoke with an insolent tone,
"Well- what if I have?"

Mrs. Leblanc was totally taken aback by both the affirmation of her worst
fears and Suzanne's brash tone. Suzanne had never spoken to her using that
tone.

"Well!" Mrs. Leblanc sputtered. "Why would you be doing something as stupid
as that?"

Suzanne gathered herself. "It's not stupid, a lot of girls here at college
smoke, it's no big deal." Suzanne braced herself for the worst.

"No big deal? It's a very big deal young lady. No one in the Leblanc family
smokes. You know that! I suppose, Jill has something to do with this?"

Now Suzanne was getting angry. "Listen, mother. I am 19 years old. Smoking is
not illegal. I tried it a few times and I found out that I enjoyed it. It
relaxes me. That's all. As I said before, it's no big deal."

"How long has this been going on? You're not addicted are you?" Mrs. Leblanc
said angrily.

The word "addicted" rang in Suzanne's ears. She knew that this morning, she
could only think about one thing before making the call. Having a cigarette.

Her voice was now calm and determined. "Mom, I don't smoke a lot, just
occasionally. It's a social thing. Everyone here at college smokes. And one
more thing, Jill had nothing to do with this. It was entirely my idea. Let's
make that clear." She was getting good at lying, she thought.

Her mother was now raging at her daughter's insubordination and her voice
became louder. "Well, I forbid you to smoke. You are not to smoke anymore. Do
you understand?"

Suzanne cringed. She had never disobeyed her mother. This was the moment of
truth. She paused, and then heard herself say "I have some bad news for you.
I don't intend to quit, no matter what you say. I am an adult now. I have the
right to make my own decisions."

Giselle was now beside herself now and she paused to allow her to calm down.
In a more quiet voice she replied, "You're playing with fire, young lady, and
you are going to get burnt. You think this out carefully. This is not over
yet. You know we Catholics consider our bodies to be temples of God. How can
you do that to your body? I just don't understand."

Her mother's reference to religion made the hair on her neck rise. This was
exactly what she was trying to get away from. Catholicism was based on guilt.
This comment demanded a clear symbol of her defiance. She quickly grabbed a
cigarette from the package, and brought it to her lips. She made sure the
click of Phil's lighter would be clearly heard through the receiver. She lit
up and inhaled deeply.

Her mother heard the click of the lighter, and knew exactly what Suzanne was
doing. "Suzanne, I can't believe you're doing this to yourself. Have you no
shame? You haven't heard a thing I've said, have you?" She was beside
herself.

Now filled with the courage, and again feeling more relaxed form the effects
of the cigarette, Suzanne said with a challenging voice. "Well, mother,
here's the deal. I like the occasional cigarette. I know that smoking is not
the best thing for me, but I do like it. I don't smoke a lot right now- but I
want you to understand something. The more you give me a hard time about
this, the more I'm going to smoke. Do you understand? Have I made myself
clear?" She paused as she inhaled and exhaled, making sure her mother could
hear her. Tendrils of smoke exited her nostrils as the last part of the drag
exited her body reluctantly. She paused, as there was silence on the other
end of the line.

"In fact, if you don't get off my back about this, I just might go out and
buy myself a carton of cigarettes and smoke them all until I get totally
addicted. Is that what you want?"

"I can't believe you're treating me like this." She recognized at that moment
that there wasn't a thing she could do about it. She felt totally helpless
and was near tears.

"If that is the way you feel about it, don't consider calling me until you
have come to your senses. You heard what I said. You are not to smoke. There
is no room for negotiation on this. I hope you understand." With that last
remark her mother hung up in desperation.

Suzanne smiled. She had won this first round with her mother. She knew that
her mother would not back down. She couldn't lose. She could now smoke as
much as she wanted. Suzanne could blame her mother for her ever-growing
desire that was developing. It was perfect.

She heard the door to the bedroom open. "Oh, Good morning Suzanne." Phil
noticed immediately that Suzanne was standing there smoking hungrily. He
smiled, as he thought to himself. There was no doubt about it. She was
hooked.

Suzanne casually took another long drag on the full flavor cigarette. "Oh, Hi
Sweetie. Could you do me favor? After we have some coffee, you can drive me
home. On the way, I need to pick up something up at the convenience store.
Could you please make a stop?" She was not about to be treated like a child.

Phil could only guess what was on her mind?
