COLD TURKEY

Part 6

The Land Rover came to a sudden halt outside Denise's cabin.  Irene's daughter
would now be tucked up in bed.  The Moon lightened up the whole woodlands.

"I really enjoyed tonight, Irene.  Can we do this again?" Leo smiled whilst
lighting another cigarette.

"Of course.  I can't keep my smoking secret from Denise for long.  She will
notice the smell." Irene reasoned, exhaling her smoke against the windshield.

"Then just be honest with her.  If she is bitchy about it, then it is her
problem.  Whatever happens, I will be here for you." Leo stated.

Irene inhaled deeply again, her eyes wide open and witnessing the smoke trail
evaporating as the ash glowed red.  She then blew her smoke against the
windshield again in defiance.

"I appreciate your company, Leo.  Where have you been all my life?"

They both glared into each other's eyes, as their lips met.  They both
passionately kissed, love was blooming in the Land Rover...

"Wakey wakey Mom.  Sun is shining." Denise shouted, wearing a short blouse and
jeans.  

Irene's eyes took a moment to readjust to the daylight as she sat up in bed.
The booze from the bar afterwards had given Irene a hangover.  Her head was
pounding.  She noticed that she was craving a cigarette straight away - an
overnight result of chain-smoking with her new boyfriend.  As Irene smiled to
events of last night, Denise disturbed her thoughts for a second.

"Like what time did you get in last night?"

"Aww honey I am sorry.  Leo and I had a picnic by the lake, then he showed me
around the local village." Irene lied carefully.  She knew her daughter would
have a fit if she knew the truth.  

"So you going out with Leo now?" Denise asked whilst brushing her hair.

"Yeah, I suppose so........in fact, I am going over to meet Leo now.  You
gonna be ok?" Irene said, her craving for a cigarette deepening with every
passing second.  Her past experience of a morning cigarette would be the only
thing to make her feel better.

"I thought we were going jogging this morning?" Denise inquired, pondering why
her mother would now break her daily routine with her daughter just for a guy.

"Eh....you go on ahead without me, dear.  I dont feel too up to it this
morning.  I am just a little tired with the lack of sleep." Irene reasoned,
not wanting to give the impression she had been drinking either.  Smoking and
drinking were both vices Denise had always hated.

"Ok Mom, you will be back later though?" Denise asked.

"Yeah sure.  I will phone you."

"Fine Mom, I am going jogging now talk to you soon." Denise smiled before
leaving the bedroom and cabin.

'What a relief!' Irene thought as she rushed out of bed and took out her
hidden, new pack of Rothman's cigarettes.  She ran out of the back porch of
the cabin and quickly lit up, her system deprived of nicotine for four hours.
The morning cigarette was helping Irene focus her mind and allieviate some of
the weight on her mind due to the hangover.  Once she finished her second
cigarette, she got dressed and drove out towards the groceries store...
