CORRUPTED

5.	Addicted to Love (of Tobacco).

Gwen awoke the next morning early. She looked over. Connie was fast
asleep beside her in bed. She sighed, and put her head back on the pillow.
It'd been a wonderful night.

Several times Connie used the term "corrupted." She said she was glad
she'd completely corrupted her. Had she? Gwen sighed. Yes, perhaps she had.
She knew she'd never be the same again. The intense physical and emotional
pleasure she'd experienced was like nothing she'd ever felt before. When Don
made love to her, she came about half the time. But last night, she happily
noted, she'd come multiple times, over and over. The release felt both
invigorating and exhausting at the same time.

She looked at the clock. It was six thirty. She would have to get up
soon. She reached over and began softly stroking Connie's blond hair on the
pillow beside her. Corrupted? Well, if this was corruption, she welcomed it
with open arms!

She got up quietly, leaving the sleeping blond in the bed. Wearing only a
tee shirt, she padded down the stairs to the kitchen. She put on the coffee
and saw the overflowing ashtray on the kitchen table. It reminded her of what
she wanted. She wanted her first cigarette of the day.

She'd lost count of exactly how much she was smoking now. In the last
couple days, she knew she'd smoked a lot. And the more she smoked, the more
she enjoyed it. She put a cigarette in her mouth and flicked the lighter.
She dragged, inhaled, and the Marlboro did its job, delivering a delightful
first nicotine jolt. She smiled as she exhaled. No matter what else
happened, there was no way she could quit doing this at least twenty times a
day!

Following her first cigarette, she went upstairs to get ready for work.
Connie quietly groaned from the bed, but didn't wake up. Gwen fixed her hair,
put on some make up, another new thing for her, and doffed another cute, new
outfit. She briefly admired herself in the mirror. God, she looked good!

She had just enough time for a cup of coffee and a quick bowl of cereal.
She walked over to her bed and kissed Connie gently on the cheek. The
sleeping blond awoke and smiled.

"Hey," she groaned. "You're leaving already?"

"Yeah, I have to get to work." She leaned over and kissed her again, this
time on the mouth.

"You've already had a cigarette, haven't you?" Connie smiled.

"Yes, I have, of course," Gwen laughed. "What did you expect?"

"I expect that you'll smoke as often as you can," the blond girl moaned,
sitting up in the bed. "Because you're a smoker now, and a hell of a great
lover, too."

"I'm glad you think so," Gwen laughed. "I'll see you for dinner. And
don't forget I'm getting together with Judy Nelson tonight."

"Damn," Connie muttered, swinging her legs over the side of the bed and
getting up. "Hey, wait, I'll come downstairs and join you while you have your
coffee."

She followed Gwen downstairs. Connie poured herself some coffee and sat
across from Gwen as she began eating her cereal. Connie lit up a cigarette.

"So what are you going to do about Don?" she asked.

"I don't know," Gwen admitted. "I guess it depends on how he reacts to the
changes I've made."

"And what if he doesn't like them?"

Gwen smiled. "Well, then, I guess he's fucked. I like the new me. I like
my new look, and I love my new persona. I'm sure as hell not going to quit
smoking, if that's what you mean."

"The smoking's not the thing I'm most worried about," Connie went on. "I
mean, I'm guessing that you'll never quit again. You like it too much." She
hit on her cigarette and blew some smoke toward Gwen. "But what about the sex
thing?"

"I don't know. It'll be awfully tough for you and me to be secret lovers
on the side, won't it?" She munched on a bite of cereal. "But I don't know
if I'll ever be able to return to being a quiet, submissive wife. My eyes
have been opened, Connie. There's so much more to sex than I ever dreamed. I
like it."

"Of course," Connie nodded with a satisfied smile. "So what does that
mean?"

"It might mean that Don will throw me out," Gwen continued. "He's so
committed to the teaching of the church. The preacher and the elders will
make him get rid of me. But right now, I don't care. I'm not buckling back
under his thumb. I can't, Connie. I just can't. So I guess we'll see
whether Don loves me more than he loves his church friends and their
philosophy. But I can't worry about that right now. I only know that I have
to do what I have to do."

"It's worth thinking about," Connie smiled. She tapped some ashes in the
ashtray. "Want a drag?"

Gwen nodded, and Connie passed her the cigarette. Gwen took a hard puff
and handed it back. "I guess I'm a work in process right now," she went on,
turning her head to exhale a stream of smoke. "We'll just have to see what
happens. But Don won't be back for another week. There's plenty of time to
think about it before he returns."

She stood up and carried her bowl to the sink. She ran some water in it
and placed it in the dishwasher. "I'm off to work. We'll talk about this
more later."

"Right," Connie smiled. "But I'm glad you're resolute, Gwen. I'm glad you
have no intention of throwing in the towel."

"I can't," the brunette smiled. "You've corrupted me, Connie."

Driving to work Gwen lit up again, enjoying her new routine of smoking in
her car. Connie was right. The pressure to return to her old way of life, to
conform, would come soon. And it wouldn't only be Don. The coercion would
come sooner, beginning with her meeting with Judy Nelson.

Gwen continued her new life as a smoker at work, taking smoke breaks
morning and afternoon and smoking at lunch with a group that was rapidly
turning into her new friends there. Her boss noticed her return to the
smoking habit and mentioned it negatively, but she ignored his comments. She
didn't care what anyone thought. She was a smoker now. She had to stand
firm.

Arriving home for dinner, Connie was gone. She'd left a note saying that
she had to cover an extra shift at the video store. Gwen fixed herself a
small supper and began thinking about what she'd say to Judy. The trouble
was, she didn't know how to approach it. She decided to play it by ear.

Judy was waiting for her at an outdoor table at the little coffee shop in
the strip shopping center, a popular hang out for people in their twenties.
It was a beautiful early summer evening, and over half the outside tables were
populated with small groups of coffee drinkers.

Judy Nelson was in her late twenties. Like most women in their church, her
hair was long and straight. Her clothes were plain and unostentatious. But
she was pretty. Her face was uncluttered with the frown lines that marked
many of the overbearing, judgmental women in the church. Judy was an
easygoing person, and had been a good friend for years.

Gwen wore a tank top and shorts on purpose. The outfit made a statement,
and Judy picked up on its significance.

"What on earth did you do to your hair?" she asked. "And that outfit!
Does Don know you're wearing it?"

"No," Gwen smiled. "And I didn't tell him I was getting my hair cut
either. What do you think of it?"

"It's very cute," Judy smiled. She was an honest woman, lacking the agenda
of many of those in the church. "But Don won't like it."

"Who cares?" she shrugged. "I have to tell you the truth, Judy. I've been
doing some serious thinking the last few days. I've decided I'm done
conforming to other people's ideas of who I should be, and how I should look.
I don't care what they say. I want to look good, not frumpy."

"And you think I'm frumpy?" It was an honest question.

"I didn't say that," Gwen smiled. "You're a cute girl, Judy. I'm only
saying that I can't live the way you do anymore. When Don comes back, some
things are going to change."

They went inside to order their coffee. Both got lattes. They returned to
their outdoor table to sit and chat.

Gwen explained some of her thinking to her friend. She told her about Don
forbidding her to buy clothes she wanted, and how she and Connie discovered
Playboys in Don's basement workbench. However, she didn't mention her return
to smoking or her expanded sexual interest, including the fooling around with
her sister-in-law.

"Wow," Judy exclaimed. "No wonder you're upset! If I found girlie
magazines in Phil's desk, I'd be ready to kill him."

"See? That's how I felt. He's been a damn hypocrite, Judy. A damn
hypocrite!"

Her friend's face fell. "Gwen, it's not like you to swear."

"Correction. It didn't _used_ to be like me. Like I said, Judy, things
are changing. If Don wants to play by different rules, then so will I."

Judy pondered it for a moment. Gwen decided to go on. "I tore out the
centerfold from one of his Playboys, and put her up on the refrigerator, to
remind me of his two-faced approach. When he comes back next week, one of the
first things he'll see is naked Miss June. Then he'll understand why I won't
roll over and play the submissive wife any longer."

"So that's why you cut your hair? And that's why you're now dressing in
those worldly clothes?"

"They're not worldly, Judy. They're cute. I decided there's nothing wrong
with looking good. Don sure doesn't think so, or he wouldn't keep those
pictures of naked women around. I know who my competition is now. I intend
to do my best to strut my own stuff."

"You _do_ look nice, Gwen. You really do. Sometimes I wish I could do
that, too. But Phil would kill me if I cut my hair or bought myself stylish
clothes. And if Phil didn't, the elders in the church would shun me."

"That's the point, Judy. Do you really care what those people think? Can
you really afford to let them control you? I know what you're worried about.
You're afraid you'll lose all your friends if you break out. But I'm telling
you, if they reject you because you start being yourself, well, they weren't
really your friends in the first place." She paused. "Judy, start being
yourself, not some cookie-cutter image of the perfect wife. And if that's not
okay with your husband or the people at church, then I guess you've learned
who your friends really are. Fuck them!"

Judy turned white as a sheet. "Gosh, Gwen, I can't believe you're talking
like that."

"It feels good, Judy. Trust me. You should try it."

Her friend's hands were trembling. "Oh, I couldn't," she muttered. "It's
inappropriate."

"The thing that's inappropriate is cowering behind some idealized icon of
the person you're supposed to be, when that's not really who you are. That's
inappropriate. It's wrong. I found that once I started verbalizing how I
felt, it became easier to do something about it."

Judy looked into Gwen's eyes. "You really mean it?"

"Absolutely. There's a Bible verse that says, `Out of the abundance of the
heart the mouth speaks.' If you say it, it starts to become real for you.
You begin to find the courage to act on what you're saying. Go ahead, Judy.
Try it."

There was a long pause. "I don't like it when Phil tells me what to do,"
she began. "I resent the way he tries to control me."

"Very good, Judy. But I think there's more than that inside of you."

"It also makes me mad when the elders in the church criticize the way women
dress," she went on. "It makes me really mad!"

"You can do better than that, Judy. In reality, you think the preacher has
his fuckin' head up his ass. Isn't that right?"

Judy slowly nodded. "Yes, you're right, Gwen. I hate to admit it, but I
do think that sometimes."

"Then say it, girl. Go ahead. Say it out loud. It'll make you feel so
much better. And it'll also embolden you to start doing something about it."

Judy took a deep breath. "I think their rules are stupid," she grumbled.
She smiled nervously. "And I think they've all got their heads up their
asses," she added self-consciously.

Gwen quietly applauded. "Very good, Judy. But let it all out. Let the
anger come."

"I'm tired of how men in the church put women down," she went on, picking
up intensity as she went. "I wish just for once they'd let us decide how _we_
want to dress, how _we_ want to look. There's nothing wrong with looking
nice, is there, Gwen?"

"No, there's nothing wrong with it. Not at all. Of course there isn't.
I'm damn glad I cut my hair and got some nice new clothes. Now men turn their
heads to look at me, and I like that. It reassures me I'm a woman, and a damn
good-looking one! I'm not ashamed of it. I like providing other people, men
and also women, with the pleasure of seeing my body and openly admiring it.
It's nice. You're very pretty, Judy. Wouldn't you like to do that? Be
honest!"

Judy was grinning now. "Yes, I sure would," she whispered with a giggle.

Gwen made a face. "I can't hear you, Judy. More forcefully, please!"

She raised her voice. "I'd like to show off my body," she said more
assertively. "Oh, I wish to God I could!"

"You can, Judy. Believe me, the choice is yours. Just tell Phil and the
male leaders in the church to go fuck themselves. Tell `em you're finished
with their shitty, manipulative attitudes."

She screwed up her courage. "I wish all the men with anti-women attitudes
in our church would just go to hell!" She said it with a gulp, stopping to
make sure no bolts of lightning were falling from the sky, then laughed at
herself. "Gosh, Gwen, that felt good," she beamed.

"Of course. Sure it did," Gwen agreed. "You see, deep down inside every
woman like you and me is a sleeping rebel, and she's just waiting to get out.
And this is the truth, Judy: The more you say it, the more forcefully you
say, and the louder you say it, the truer it becomes. So say it again. Go
on. Say it. And use the worst language you can imagine. It'll feel real
good."

Judy had a wicked grin on her face. "I'm sick and tired of this shit. I
mean it. They push us down, want us to be submissive, and make us dress all
plain, while dismissing us as people the whole time. Well, fuck them!" She
giggled. "I mean it, Gwen, fuck them! I don't intend to take it anymore.
Damn it, if you can get your hair cut and wear cute clothes, then so can I."
She laughed again. "You're right. The more I say it, the more I start to
believe it."

Gwen realized this was a crossroads. She decided to take the risky path,
not the safe one.

"Judy, I have something else to admit. I'm rebelling in some other ways.
You may not approve of them all, but you're my friend. I'm not going to hide
them from you." With that, she opened her purse and put her pack of Marlboro
Lights 100's on the table.

"Oh my Gosh," Judy gasped. "Gwen, don't tell me you're smoking, too?"

"Oh yeah," she boldly and confidently replied. She brazenly shook a single
cigarette from her pack and thrust it between her smiling lips. "I once gave
up smoking years ago," she explained. "But I never wanted to; not really. I
did it because I always thought it was sinful. But now I know better." She
raised her lighter and clicked it, causing a small flame to ignite the tip of
her cigarette. "Now I know it's not sinful; it's pleasant, and that's why
they don't want me to smoke. But I like pleasure, Judy. I really like
pleasure." She hit hard on her cigarette and pulled smoke into her lungs.
"So, in addition to everything else, I'm now smoking, too!"

Judy shook her head. "But it's so bad for you!"

"Is it? How do you know?"

   "Well, everyone says so."

"But I thought you didn't want to do things anymore just because everyone
said so."

Judy stuttered. "Yeah, but, this is different. Isn't it?"

"I don't think so. If you've never tried it, Judy, you can't make an
informed decision. I love to smoke now."

Her friend shook her head. "Actually, I have tried it before. Like you,
when I was a teenager, I used to smoke a little."

"Ah, I see. And did you like it?"

Judy hesitated. "Yeah, I did," she sheepishly grinned.

"So why don't you have a cigarette with me right now?"

   "Oh no, Gwen, I couldn't."

"Why? Because Phil will tell you smoking's wrong, that it's sinful?"

"No," she waffled. "It's just that -. Oh Gosh, Gwen. I feel so
confused."

Gwen smiled as she hit on her Marlboro again. "You're not confused; you're
afraid. You're afraid to do what you want, because of what other people will
say. Well, Judy Nelson, you can live _your_ life that way. But I sure don't
want to!" She tipped her head back and slowly released a huge cone of smoke.
"Ah, that's _so_ pleasurable!"

Judy's eyes were transfixed by the sight of her old friend smoking a
cigarette. "Well, maybe it wouldn't hurt to have just one? Do you think?"

Gwen nodded triumphantly. "Of course it wouldn't hurt you, Judy. Go
ahead. Be my guest. Have one with me. I think you'll really enjoy it.
Consider it a down-payment on your upcoming liberation. You and I, we can be
pioneers, women who break away from the vice-grip of all the assholes trying
to control us!"

Slowly, almost reluctantly, Judy accepted the proffered cigarette. "It's
been such a long time," she began. "Years, really. I think I last smoked
when I was seventeen."

"And now you're almost thirty. So it's way past time to try smoking
again." She clicked her lighter as Judy leaned in to catch the light. She
did, and her cheeks caved in. She dragged on the cigarette, and then inhaled
the smoke into her lungs. She smiled a big smile.

"Ooh, this is nice, Gwen," she sighed happily as the smoke soaked into her
lungs. "It's _really_ nice!"

"I'm glad you think so, Judy," beamed Gwen. "I certainly like it."

Judy puffed and inhaled again. "Oh my God, Gwen, this tastes so good to
me! I can't believe I'm actually doing it."

Gwen was delighted to hear her friend starting to say "God" instead of
"Gosh" all the time It was another step in the right direction, away from the
Fascist male perpetrators of her imprisonment. She grinned at her friend.
"Judy, you look good with a cigarette. You really do."

"Thanks," she blushed. "So you've really decided to start smoking? But
what will Don think about this?"

Gwen laughed. "Probably the same thing he'll think about my short hair, my
sleeveless tank top, and my shorts. The thing is, I don't care. I don't care
if he pisses all over the floor when he sees it. I'm not living for him
anymore, see? I'm living for me. And I like to smoke. So I'm going to keep
right on smoking as long as I fuckin' feel like it!"

Judy nodded. She understood. The nicotine made her head spin, but she
kept smoking. "I wish I had your nerve. I really do. I'm just afraid I
wouldn't be able to stand up for myself like you. Phil and I've been married
for over ten years."

"That's over ten years that you've been giving in to him on everything.
I'd say it's time that stopped. It's time he let you live your life, Judy.
Don't you think?"

She laughed. "God, maybe you're right, Gwen. Maybe you're right."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Later that night Gwen told Connie about her strange interlude with Judy
Nelson. Connie laughed as Gwen related her friend's reaction, and giggled
with delight hearing of Judy smoking a cigarette.

"Gwen, you're amazing! I thought I was the ultimate wicked temptress. But
here you are, acting every bit as evil as me. Congratulations. It's one
thing to willingly let yourself be corrupted. But it's quite another to begin
corrupting someone else."

"I'm not corrupting her," Gwen objected. "I'm freeing her. Judy needs to
get out from under Phil's thumb. He's as bad as Don, and probably just as
hypocritical. But with a little work, I think Judy Nelson can become just as
independent, or just as corrupt, if you prefer, as you and me." She reached
for a cigarette. "I gave her a half pack of Marlboro Lights 100's and a
lighter. I also gave her Maya's name and phone number to get her hair cut.
We'll see what happens." She clicked her lighter and lit up. "I don't think
we've seen the end of this particular story. Who knows? Maybe before we're
done we'll corrupt lots of the women in the Baptist Church."

"You haven't faced the opposition yet," Connie warned. "And it's coming,
trust me. But as long as you're ready for it, it doesn't have to make things
harder." She wiggled her fingers, silently asking for a drag. Her comrade
handed her the cigarette, and Connie took a quick puff before giving it back.
"But I don't care about the others, Gwen. I just don't want what you and I
have to end. I love you, baby. I don't care what you tell Donnie. I just
don't want to lose you."

"You won't," she reassuringly smiled. "But are you sure it's really love?
Maybe it's just lust, Connie."

It was Connie's turn to laugh. "God, you _are_ evil! Okay, maybe it _is_
mostly lust. But I want it, Gwen. I want you. I don't want to lose you when
Donnie comes home."

After a powerful drag on her cigarette, Gwen leaned in and planted her
mouth on Connie's. She kissed her, hard. Smoke escaped from their locked
lips and nostrils as they were joined together. "You won't lose me," Gwen
repeated. "I'll always be your special friend. You gave me something I
wanted, something I didn't know how to pursue on my own. I'll never forget
that, Connie. Never."

The blond girl wrapped her arms around Gwen's neck. "And I won't let you
forget it, babe," she cooed. She kissed her again. "And right now I want to
remind you once more precisely why I don't intend to ever let you forget."

They shared a passionate embrace. Finally Gwen sighed. She put her
cigarette in her mouth and reached her hands up under Connie's tee-shirt.
"These big juicy tits of yours, Connie, they're so nice and big and round and
soft," she whispered mischievously, as she let her cigarette bob up and down
in her mouth. "I just love having your tits in my hands, and feeling them
melt between my fingers when I squeeze them; like this!"

Connie closed her eyes and groaned. Gwen smiled. "So maybe you _have_
corrupted me, baby. Whatever. But tonight you're gonna have to enjoy the
fruits of your labors." She dragged on the dangling cigarette, inhaled, and
exhaled into Connie's face, all the while pressing her hands against her
breasts inside her tee-shirt. "Would you like that?"

"Oh, yeah," moaned Connie, eyes still closed. "Oh yeah!"

Gwen removed the cigarette from her lips after taking a last drag, and
kissed Connie one more time. "Yeah, well, I'm going to like it, too. It
turns me on to hear you moan and groan when I touch you. I love it." She
began unbuttoning Connie's pants. "Come to mama, pussy. It's time for you to
have some fun!"

Connie laid back on the couch and spread her legs. Gwen slowly undid the
zipper and pulled her panties down. She smiled to herself. There was no way
she was leaving this behind!
