BUFFY, THE VAMPIRE SLAYER - DEMON WEED

FINAL PART 10 - FACE TO FACE WITH THE ENEMY

Willow, Cordelia and Joyce sat inside the smokey bar chaining themselves
through cigarettes like locomotives. Buffy sat at the table beside them
following suit.

"Yeah. Men are all flawed. They are limited." Willow laughed while exhaling.

"I totally agree, Willow. You can't trust them at all. They think they rule
the world." Cordelia responded.

"Caos was right from the start. Men needed to be shown a lesson - and sure
they got one!" laughed Joyce.

Buffy continued to puff away in silence, monitoring her group socialising
when a thought hit her like a concrete slab.

"Who, or what is Caos?" Buffy asked whilst taking another deep puff of her
burning cigarette.

The group stared at each other and laughed before Willow replied.

"Listen, Buffy - all that will hit you very soon. You are coming on fine."
Willow stated, noting Buffy's increasing intake in smoking.

"No, Willow - please tell me now." Buffy pleaded, desperate to learn all she
could before this new expected consciousness was to settle in.

Willow lit up a fresh cigarette, making the end glow red in the blue haze
occupying the empty bar.

"OK. Caos arrived in Sunnydale a while ago and through friends, has explained
to us all that men are our enemy. She explained the argument and told us to
all enjoy ourselves. Looking back now, I was such a boring weed." Willow
reminisced.

Cordelia inhaled, then said "Yeah, I was such a snob."

Joyce then added whilst exhaling a thin stream of tobacco smoke "And I was
denying myself something I thoroughly enjoyed."

Willow, exhaling again, asked Buffy "What do you think, Buffy? How are you
feeling now with smoking?"

Buffy could no longer deny that her tastebuds had become fully accustomed to
her smoking. She also noted that she seemed far more relaxed with this new
lifestyle.

"I am getting used to it, Willow. That's all."

Joyce took a final, powerful drag on her cigarette butt before dumping it
into the overflowing ashtray. As she exhaled a strong stream at the ceiling,
she stated "Well, let's get moving - we must keep the hunt up!"

The group, including Buffy, instinctively nodded in agreement and exited the
bar.

"What now, Giles?" Xander asked, puffing from the constant running.

The duo had located to a quiet playarea for toddlers. Like everywhere else,
the ground was deserted and motionless.

"We locate Buffy - if anyone can stop this, she can." Giles said, sniffing in
disgust of the constant smell of tobacco lingering in the atmosphere.

Xander responded "Remember, they might have gotten to her too. We have to
then find her fast."

"Or maybe find us..." Giles muttered in horror as the group of former
slayerettes entered the street occupying the toddlers playground.

The duo sighed in disbelief as they watched Cordelia, Willow, Joyce and
Willow chain-smoke naturally.

Giles sighed "They got Buffy." as he watched Buffy take a gigantic pull on
her cigarette, the end flaring like a traffic light. Giles watched in
disbelief throughout Buffy's lengthy inhale and exhale.

"I have an idea, Giles. Just do as I ask without thinking." Xander spoke
softly

Xander whispered quietly in Giles' ear as the group made their way down the
motionless street.

Suddenly, Xander sprinted to confront the group face to face.

"Hi, girls! Lovely night, isn't it?" Xander smiled, complimenting the
dark-reddish sky overhead dominating the air.

Willow stepped forward suprised "You shouldn't be running around on the
streets at this time. You had a chance to die quietly..." she paused to take
another puff from her cigarette "However, it's Xander - he never stays down!"

Joyce then asked "If we gave you to 3 to get a head start, would you take the
opportunity?"

Xander immediately glanced at Giles motioning slowly towards Buffy.

His attention then returned to the threatening group. "Yeah, why not?"

"Well, you better make a start - now!" exclaimed Cordelia.

Cordelia puffed once again on her burning cigarette, before adding "Are we
all ready?"

The group responded in unison "Eye, eye, captain!"

Instantly, the group including Buffy, laughed uncontrollably at their last
remark, unintentionally commenting on Xander's obvious missing eye.

Xander began to sprint down the alley and was followed instantly by the
group.

As Buffy, who was beginning to share the same sense of 'humour' as the group,
began to join them in the pursuit she felt a blow to the back of her head.
The Slayer immediately dropped her cigarette and fell to the concrete
unconscious.

Buffy awoke groggily to the sight of a flickering light occasionally putting
the dim room into total darkness. Giles unscrewed the light bulb and replaced
it with a new one.

"Giles?" Buffy muttered in suprise at her surroundings.

"Buffy, you are awake. Good. How are you feeling?" Giles, looking concerned,
asked.

"Fine apart from sore head. Do you know that any more blows to my head
tonight and someone will be digging a grave for me!!" Buffy exclaimed as she
rose to her feet.

Buffy instinctively reached into her leather jacket pocket, the new location
for her new habit, and attempted extracting her cigarettes but to no avail.
The Slayer immediately looked into Gile's eyes and asked with authority:

"Where are my cigarettes, Giles?"

Giles shied away from Buffy, knowing of his crime "I have been testing them,
Buffy, to find out what the addictive substance is."

Buffy tred closer to Giles, now recognising her location with the improved
lighting - Gile's garage.

The Slayer asked "Well, can I have what cigarettes are left? Please - Now!"
noting the half-empty pack lying on the table next to the librarian.

"No! I have a feeling the only way to seperate your addictiveness to nicotine
is to 'starve'." replied Giles bravely, not knowing what reaction to expect
from the Slayer.

Buffy retorted instantly "Giles! You know that I can kill you right now
without remorse!...I will kill you!!!"

Suddenly, a flurry of new visions and thoughts hit her like a train. The
Slayer fell to her knees in mental agony, unable to control the viscious
streak in her thinking pattern.

Buffy immediately muttered uncontrollably "Giles - You must die now!!!"

The Slayer rose to her feet and stalked towards Giles, now petrified of what
she would do.

"Buffy!!! Fight these thoughts!!! Think of all the innocent people being
harmed here!!!" Giles pleaded as he backed himself into a corner.

The student withdrew a knive and waved it under Giles' nose aggressively. As
Giles knelt down, thinking fate had selected his prodige to slay him, the
Slayer immediately dropped the knive.

Buffy tred back from the scene slowly wondering to herself what she was about
to do - kill an innocent person. She held her head in her hands, fell to her
knees and began crying.

The librarian rubbed his sweaty brow and rose to his feet. He cautiously tred
towards his disturbed student.

"Giles - I know now who the catalyst is - I know where to find them, sorry -
her!" Buffy spoke softly of her mental revelations.

Suddenly, a orange carton of the special cigarettes were tossed to the floor
in front of the Slayer. The carton immediately engrossed Buffy's attention.

"That's it, Buffy - Go ahead! Take it! Light up!" Cordelia provoked

She walked into the lighted areas of the room and confronted Giles with a
shotgun.

"You know Giles, I thought you were the saddest out of the Slayerettes."
Cordelia smiled evilly at Giles whilst monitoring Buffy's movements towards
the carton.

"Get down on your knees, Giles - you are about to be blown away!" Cordelia
laughed. She paused to extract a fresh cigarette from her pack and inserted
the cork-tipped filter between her lips.

Buffy was inticed by the fresh carton lying motionlessly on the cold concrete
floor. Her attentions to her prime motive were placed to the back of her
mind.as she continued her crawl to the cigs. With the carton playing mind
games with her, she was oblivious to the potential murdering of Giles feet
away from her.

Cordelia turned the child-proof button on her lipstick-red lighter and a
flame immediately appeared. Keeping her attention on Giles, once again
contemplating his fate, she rose the flame to the cigarette and drew heavily.
As the tip of her cigarette burned red, she released the flame which had
served its purpose and returned the lighter to her pocket.

Immediately, Cordelia was grabbed from behind and shoved straight into a
steel dog kennel, lying threateningly in the corner. The gate was closed and
locked quickly to leave Cordelia rammaging about like a crazed animal.

Giles gasped in horror as the mysterious saviour unvealed itself as Drusilla.

"You can get up, Giles - I am here to help!" Drusilla said calmly.

As Giles regained his composure, Drusilla noticed Buffy fidgeting with the
carton desperate to unpack a cigarette.

The vampire laughed "So, this is nicotines' latest slave, Giles?"

"Unfortunately, it is. Whoever is in charge here knew carefully who to
target." Giles replied, once again wiping his brow.

Drusilla walked over and picked up the pack of cigarettes which lay on the
floor. She then threw them into the bin.

Cordelia groaned at her loss "No! - They were mine! You will pay for this!"

Giles now expected the vampire to remove the carton in the same fashion but
was suprised at the lack of movement.

"You better take the cigarettes off Buffy as well?" Giles assumed.

"No, Giles - I confess that I know who is the conspiractor behind all of
this. Sit down." Drusilla sighed.

The librarian withdrew two chairs occupied in the corner of the garage. He
noticed Cordelia halted her tantrum to puff contently on her last cigarette.
Buffy smiled at unpackaging a softpack from the carton in satisfaction. She
proceeded to light up immediately.

"Anyway, Giles, the reason I left Buffy with the cigs is that she would go
mad without them." Drusilla spoke softly, hoping not to attract any attention
from external threats.

"I think that is obvious, Drusilla!" Giles laughed

"No! I know that the subject really does go mad without nicotine. What
happens is that the substance contained within feeds on their aggressive
behaviours. Without the substance, their aggressive feelings go on overdrive
to an extent where they simply suffer brain death." Drusilla unveiled.

"And how do you know this?" Giles said, overawed at the vampires' last
statement.

"I have met the demon behind this. She explained this to Spike as part of the
plan."

"What plan is that?"

"To simply take over the planet without any opposition. Think. To have no
opposition is to divert their attention..." Drusilla explained.

They then heard the click of the lighter as Buffy flared up the cigarette
desperately pumping her veins with the vital nicotine it needed.

"You see, Buffy is still your last hope - I saw she could not kill you. This
shows she is still thinking independently. She must act now before she is
completely sucked in." Drusilla explained.

Giles asked, intrigued "Why are you helping us, Drusilla?"

"For revenge. Spike was unfortunately a 'sacrifice' for her cause. She has a
desire to end all male vampire existence. It was promised that food would be
continously available as long as we co-operated." Drusilla explained again as
Buffy rose to her feet.

The Slayer immediately withdrew her constantly present stake upon viewing
Drusilla.

"Get away from Giles now!" Buffy threatened.

"It's Ok, Buffy, its fine - just puff away as you please!" Giles replied
desperately.

Buffy seemed suprised by Giles' last comment but complied with his
suggestion. She once again fed her hungry tobacco-filled lungs with another
great inhale off her cigarette.

The Slayer exhaled "I know where she is. I am going right now to kill her!"

"Buffy, I will come with you - I have access to the Initiative underground to
get you in." Drusilla pleaded.

The Slayer seemed suprised "How do you know..."

"It's a long story, Buffy - Let's go!" Drusilla smiled knowingly as the pair
walked towards the garage door.

Upon leaving, Drusilla added "Giles, you have to babysit tonight!" referring
to trapped Cordelia, who was not crying at her languishing cigarette butt.

Buffy and Cordelia hid in the bushes facing the Initiative house silently
like leopards hunting.

"You know what to do, Buffy, don't you?" Drusilla asked.

Buffy exhaled cigarette smoke towards the ground to purposely not attract
attention.

"I don't know yet what I will do - I sense though that I must confront the
demon." Buffy said

The pair then snooped around to the back entrance quietly, carefully noting
the movements of the care-free nicotine slaves at the front of the
smoke-filled house. Upon entering the back entrance, Buffy was hit with the
warm, welcoming scent of fresh tobacco smoke. Drusilla located the secret
panel on the wall and she was scanned instantly for recognition. The door
eventually opened to expose the once-secret lair of the Initiative. The pair
carefully tred through and along the steal staircase.

Upon entering, they viewed a huge conveyor belt and machines churning to
life. They, especially Buffy, noticed that cigarettes were being fitted
together for packaging. Buffy thought; I am in heaven! whereas Drusilla
thought; this is where the smokesticks are coming from.

"I am going to get a closer look at the machine operation - you go and
confront the demon!" Drusilla whispered, noting Buffy's lack of authority as
her mind wondered on about smoking.

Before Buffy left in pursuit of the demon, Drusilla added "Listen, be strong
against her - don't let her take control. For the sake of humanity, remain
focused."

Buffy nodded in agreement, blushing slightly at the dependence of the world
on her shoulders.

The vampire descalted towards the main area of the operation and observed the
following; A big, steal machine was churning rapidly fresh cigarettes onto
the unforgiving conveyor belt. The cigarettes were then retrieved by a needle
which injected a stale, green substance into the tip. The cigarette was then
returned systematically to the conveyor belt, awaiting its next operation.

The Slayer approached an office door where she felt a strong presence moving
behind the door. She slowly opened the door to find a woman typing on a
computer. She noted instantly the cigarette dangling from her lips. The
Slayer unintentionally sighed in relief that this woman shared her new-found
habit. However, her mind was now currently at its strongest point of will -
she knew this was the time to settle the score.

As Buffy tiptoed behind the woman, she heard a voice echo the room.

"Ah, you have come at last to pay homage to your leader!" The woman said,
turning in her chair to face suprised Buffy.

The Slayer took a few small steps back as the woman rose to her feet.

"I have been dying to meet you, Buffy - I have heard a lot about you. You
will prove an essential asset to me!" The woman continued.

"My name is Caos - I am from the hellmouth. But then you already knew that."
Caos said.

The demon boasted "Your friends told me that you would be an awkward soul to
possess. But I told them I would succeed eventually."

Buffy responded aggressively as the demon quickly unveiled its true, scaly
identity.

"You haven't got me at all, Caos - you have severly underestimated me!"

As Buffy retrieved her stake, the demon boasted "You may been a stong willed
person but no-one has never fought against the 'ingredients'", reffering to
the nicotine within the consumed cigarettes.

"You are dying for another smoke, aren't you?" The demon toyed with the
Slayer's mind.

Caos continued "Think about it, Buffy an endless supply of tobacco for you.
Just co-operate and you will never suffer a nicotine fit."

Buffy seemed entranced by Caos' words of temptation - she knew though that
she had to fight it.

"No-one has ever confronted me and survived - You do not want to be the first
brutal victim do you?" the demon stated.

"I will take my chances, Caos." Buffy smiled, trying to collate as much
strength as she could from her nicotine-starved lungs.

The Slayer rose the stake in the demons' direction and threatened "I can
fight this addiction - the best way is always to take out the ring leader."

Caos immediately sighed"Oh well, no matter what you try and to me the real
battle is with the cigs - but I am happy to take out yourself. I haven't
fought for a long time!"

The two well-established opponents began to brawl with each other, punching
and kicking.

Drusilla continued her examination of the machine operation and found a power
switch situated on the back of a control station. The vampire laughed at the
button to end this charade.

Buffy was thrown back against the wall as the demon scraped her head,
exposing a flesh gash, with its thick threatening black claw. The demon
stalked towards the Slayer in threatening fashion and gripped her by the
throat. Buffy was now levitating in mid-air due to the inhuman strength of
the demon.

Drusilla flicked the switch with enthusiasm while muttering to herself "This
is for Spike, bitch!". Suddenly, the machine operation groaned to its death.
Caos' attention immediately diverted to the haltage of the machines. Buffy
knew this was her last chance of survival and suddenly kicked the demon in
its shin. Caos withdrew its grip instantly and viewed in fear as the Slayer
flew through the air with the stake aimed at its head. Upon landing, the
stake harpooned through the head of the demon and Caos fell into the glass
overviewing the machines. The glass shattered as the massive reptile-like
demon collapsed on top of the major cigarette adding machine. The machine
exploded outwith due to the heavy, sudden impact of the demon.

Buffy viewed the grave events, panting heavily from the shattered window. The
blinds waved back and forth, effortlessly in calming fashion. The Slayer then
approached the computer system and sat on the chair, instantly accepting its
sturdy setup. Through glancing at the computer system, she noticed
immediately that Caos was a button away from sending hundreds of standard
memos to high schools all over the world. That moment summed up the demon's
plan and the realisation hit Buffy like a bullet.

"Well, well it must be my lucky day!" Drusilla smiled as the demon lay
sprawled over the flattened machine. Caos lay in agony, paralysed all over as
the machine metal pierced right through its scally body.

The vampire whispered quietly to the demon "No more will you torment us. We
will regroup. You have lost!" Drusilla gripped the stake sticking out from
the Caos' head and said "this is for Spike!". With those final words, the
vampire forcefully shoved the stake right through, with the stake exiting the
back of the head. A short groan echoed from the beast before its last breath
of life whithered from the decaying body.

Before exiting the office, Buffy noticed a pack of cigarettes lying on top of
a filing cabinet and instinctively inserted them into her coat pocket.

She viewed Drusilla grovelling over the demon's shell and smiled. Upon
approaching the jubilant vampire, she asked "What will you do now?"

Drusilla responded softly "Move to a new town, Buffy. Start a new afterlife!"

Buffy asked "Before you leave, Drusilla would you do me a favour?"

Giles felt the dead pulse of Cordelia to unveil the horrific, pale stare of
the student. He rose to his feet again to be startled by Drusilla from
behind.

"Giles, the demon is dead."

"Thank God. We have just lost Cordelia. This war has claimed so many lives."
Giles sighed at the student body vacating his garage floor.

Giles asked "What about Buffy?"

Drusilla replied simply"Giles, she is not coming back. She feels a threat to
you around her. She simply asked me to inform you that she will keep an eye
on everyone from a distance. She cares deeply for you as a possible sole
survivor. She knows she can't give up smoking."

Buffy extracted a fresh cigarette from the demon's deminishing pack. She had
chain-smoked 6 cigarettes since her encounter with Caos. The cigarette was
inserted between her eager lips and the lighter was sparked into life. The
Slayer sucked deep to inhale all of the initial smoke into her hungry lungs.
She reset the lighter as the tip of the cigarette burned bright orange and
observed the female groups all retreating to the Initiative house.

As the Slayer puffed continously on the cigarette, she realised that the
woman would try and counter the death of their goddess. In a small way, she
felt remorseful of her actions against the subject which provided her with
this dependent habit. Buffy continued walking down the desolate street
wafting the inhaled smoke away from her face. She knew she was a true addict
now - and could never give up. Upon turning the corner, she was confronted by
Willow. Her ex-friend gave Buffy an evil stare before suprisingly walking
past the Slayer. At that point, Buffy realised that Willow knew of her
encounter and would seek revenge. Her final thought lay on the evil look from
Willow - The Slayer may have won the battle, but had not won the war.

Running for his life, Riley sprints past trashed streets heavily wounded in
the stomach. His heartbeat is booming now immensely and the sweat lashes down
of his body onto the blood-filled streets of Sunnydale. Just as he feels the
urge to slow down, he continues to hear the many stalking footsteps behind
him. The cries of wicked laughter ring all around this deserted, wrecked
town.

"THERE IS NO WHERE TO RUN TO! YOURE FINISHED LIKE THE REST OF MALE SCUM!"

Riley feels the life draining out of him with every step he takes on his
endless journey to freedom from his hunteresses. He ponders to himself

"What the hell am I going to do?"

With the knowledge that all his friends of the Initiative are dead and that
all the vampires are now set loose, he turns to the corner of a street to
view the remains of a mutilated male corpse.

"The world has gone mad! How could women do this to an innocent human being?"
Riley murmered to himself regarding the excessive barbarism of the corpse.

The dark clouds blocked out the sun. Sunnydale was one big bonfire - with
many areas set alight by firebombs. The constant, vulgar smell of death and
stale tobacco smoke were penetrating the air, almost punishing the lone
crusader in this pointless quest for survival. He knew sooner or later the
time to die would come - chaos ruled the whole town. The only sound heard all
around were of the feminine vampires enjoying the night of complete havoc.

Unfortunately, Riley's "time" was due to come sooner than later when a group
of vampires turned to run in his direction.

The chase continued into Sunnydale High School's grounds where Riley's
stamina ended when he ran into the school door. On his fall, he noticed the
complete motionlessness of the building.

The footsteps got louder..

The vampires were now yards in front of their prey - They were closing in for
the kill...

"Hey,bitches - back off! You know your duty!" came a voice from the dark.

The shadowy figure strolled into the flickering school security light,
revealing its identity. Riley immediately recognised his saviour and breathed
a sigh of relief.

"Buffy! I thought you were dead?!...Where have you been?" Riley whispered to
himself whilst panting from his marathon-running escapade.

The vampires faced the slight, head-wounded girl with evil stares. The evil
stare was returned and the group simply froze like a dog backing down to
another - They realised they entered other territory.

In unison, the vampires slouched away from helpless Riley out of the school
grounds maintaining eye contact with Buffy.

Buffy strolled towards Riley with a sense of purpose. With her hands in her
leather jacket pockets, she walked and sat on Riley's chest.

"I thought you were de..." gasped Riley in amazement paused as Buffy raised
her finger to her lips.

"Be quiet idiot! I wanted you to myself. It has been a while since my last
bit of 'fun' with a male. Shut your mouth!" blasted Buffy as she reached into
her jacket pockets and extracted, to Riley's complete disbelief, an unusual
pack of cigarettes and a royal blue lighter.

"Oh my god, they got to you to. You were our last hope..." muttered Riley as
Buffy proceded to light up with enthusiasm and exhale with pride.

"Keep your mouth shut! I will try to make this as painful and slow as
possible." Buffy teased as she brought the burning cigarette tip towards the
watery, panicked eyes of Riley.

"How d-d-did they g-g-get to you? Why did you not f-f-fight against it? How
did this e-e-even start in the first place?" panicked Riley as the tip caught
his eyelid.

Aaaaaaaaaargh!

THE END......
