Even though the conversation had been brief, John detected a definite
change in Roxie's
disposition. Whereas leading up to and all during the separation she had
been combative and
irritable, she now seemed friendly, relaxed, almost warm towards him.
Could it be that her
decision to start smoking again might have restored Roxanne back to her
old self, back the
the warm, endearing and sensual woman he had fell in love with so many
years ago. And,
John wondered, could Vicki's smoking have brought the unending bickering
and tension
between them to an end. For the first time in nearly a year, John began to
feel that maybe
there was a chance, that his marriage could be salvaged and that they
could be a family again,
even better then before. John went to bed that night early, genuinely
looking forward to the
dinner with Roxie and Vicky planned for the following evening.
They had decided to meet in the lounge at at Nick's, a local seafood
restaurant. John arrived
on time and spotted Roxie sitting at a table in the lounge, nervously
fishing through her purse
for a lighter. John, approaching from behind, flicked his bic, then
discuising his voice
somewhat, said "need a light stranger?". John was surprised when the
figure at the table pulled
his hand, holding the lit lighter, towards the end of her long cigarette,
to see that it was not
Roxie at all but was his daughter Vickey! Without letting on that he was
stunned at seeing
Vickey smoke for the first time, John non chalantly sat down as Vickey
blew a long steady
flume of smoke in the air then saying, "Thanks for the light, stranger.
Mom's in the ladies
room, she'll be back any minute." as she smiled and took another long drag
on her cigarette.
About this time the waitress dropped by, setting coasters and a basket of
chips on the table.
John snapped his fingers just as she was about to walk away and said,
"Waitress, could you
please bring an ash tray to our table for my daughter.". The waitress did
a double take,
looking closely at Vickey wondering how old she was. It didn't relay
matter though, as
Vickey's smoking style was clearly that of an adult's, regardless of her
age. The waitress
returned moments later, placing the ash tray on the table for Vickey
saying "It's OK honey,
my daughter is 13 and smokes in the home and whenever we go out. I figure,
why sneak
around, Enjoy it.".
John, noticing Roxanne finally returning from the ladies room, stood up
from the table to greet
her, giving her a polite kiss on the cheek. For the next five minutes,
John only half listened to
the conversation as he stared at Roxanne, not believing how much better
she looked, and
how much energy and vitality she had. Not only was the 45 pounds she had
gained gone, but
another 15 to boot! Then John noticed Roxanne asking Vickey for a
cigarette, apparently
they were both Salem 100's smokers now, From their conversation, John
could tell that they
had become very close lately, looking and acting more like sisters then
daughter and mother.
Dinner that evening was delicious and everyone had a great time. John had
not laughed so
hard in a long time. After dinner, Vickey lit up a cigarette and
reflexively tried to shake
another loose for her mom, however the pack was empty. John, noticing the
situation, offered
to go to the lobby and get another pack from the vending machine. As he
left the table he
confirmed "Salem 100's, right?". Vickey and Roxie looked at each other and
said, "No
Benson and Hedges, menthol please.". John now seemed confused, as he knew
they were
smoking Salems earlier, but bought B&H as instructed.
When John returned to the table Vickey was just excusing herself, as her
girlfriend and her
parents had arrived at the restaurant to pick her up. John, seeing that
this was the first time he
and Roxie were alone, took out the envelope containing the final divorce
papers. Roxie had
just removed the cellophane from the new pack and withdrew a cigarette
when she noticed
the envelope. She then placed the cigarette in her lips for John to light,
which he reflexively
did, and proceeded to take a long, deep, drag, then holding it for several
moments, slowly
blew the long stream of blue smoke in the direction of John's face. She
knew from the past
that John had a thing for this, and she could get just about anything from
him she wanted when
she smoked seductively, intentionally exhaling in his direction. She then
shook her pump
loose, letting it fall on the carpet under the table, and lifted her leg
up positioning her left foot
deeply between John's legs. She slowly began to stroke John's already
encouraged member
as she took another drag, repeating the last. John's eyes were now
squarely transfixed on
Roxanne's as she picked up the envelope saying "John, you know Vickey is
spending the
night at Michelle's tonight..." as she took another drag, "You really want
me to tear this up,
don't you?". For a moment, John wondered if she meant the envelope or the
the part of his
anatomy she was rhythmically stroking, either one of which seemed fine to
John at this point.
Without a word spoken, Roxanne slowly tore the envelope in half as John,
feeling a sudden
urge to take her home yelled "Check Please!".
