PART II - INDEPENDENCE DAY

November 21 arrived normally enough - as if it were just another day in the
week. But this particular day would forever be remembered as the
Independence Day of the New Society. Stores and tobacco shops across the
nation had been running low on cigarettes as tobacco companies had
temporarily halted shipments so as to coordinate as closely as possible the
disbursement of the mutated cigarettes. With the new supplies finally coming
in, bare shelves were restocked.

The mutation spread slowly at first, but for every one smoker that
experienced the Transformation, a chain reaction began as that person would
convert others. A mother in Albany, New York, lighting her first cigarette
of the day from a mutated pack she bought that morning, experienced the power
of the smoke and converted her children, smiling as she watched each of their
eyes transform into kaleidoscopes. An office secretary working at a UPS
delivery center in Kansas City who bought a carton of Mores that morning
experienced the Transformation while having a cigarette on her way to work.
After converting all of the personnel in the office, the delivery trucks went
on their way to spread the mutation throughout the city.

A merchant in a small convenience store just outside Mobile, Alabama
routinely lit a cigarette while restocking his shelves. After experiencing
the Transformation, he converted each of his employees and then called up his
wife, instructing her to meet him at the store with the kids. Upon her
conversion, she and the children left to spread the mutation to their friends
and neighbors. As for the merchant, he stood at his counter all day,
converting customers as they came into his store and passing out cigarettes
until his shelves were empty.

And yet in the early morning hours of the federal holiday officially
sanctioned in honor of the Great American Smoke-out, few people knew what was
happening - or how their entire society was about to change.

Baltimore, Maryland
7:30 a.m. EST

"Good morning, Mom," Patty Hong said cheerfully as Grace walked into the
kitchen in a bath robe.

"What's so good about it," she moaned with her eyes half closed reaching for
the pack of Virginia Slims on the kitchen table. She opened the top and saw
two left. Shit. If the stores didn't get any new shipments in soon she was
gonna have a fucking nicotine fit. She placed the 100 in her mouth and lit
it free-handed, taking in a deep draw to brighten the tip.

"Don't you have work today?" Patty asked, reaching for one of the few
Saratogas left in her own pack.

"Uh-huh," Grace replied after French inhaling a puff, "but not until later
this afternoon. I want to take some time off with Michelle."

"Michelle isn't going to school? What is this, a holiday or something?"

Grace scanned the headlines of the morning paper. "Some anti-smoking
holiday. It couldn't come at a better time since we're down to our last few
cigarettes." Grace closed the newspaper. "So you're off to potty train the
President's daughters today?"

"Mom," Patty mumbled, "it's not like that. They're really cool."

Patty was fortunate to have secured a part-time internship at the White House
while continuing her studies in political science at George Washington U.
Her official title was "Special Assistant to the First Daughters," but her
function was more social than official. She had secured the position after
meeting the teenage twins Gina and Leslie at a "smoke party" in Georgetown.
The three of them just "clicked," especially when the girls all discovered
they shared a passion for smoking (although the "First Daughters" had to do
their smoking in private so as not to embarrass their father.) As it was
impossible for them to buy cigarettes, Patty always made it a point to bring
along plenty of Saratogas whenever she met them.

Patty took a puff on her 120. "So what are you and Michelle gonna do today?"

"I don't know," Grace replied as she tapped some ash into the ashtray. "Sit
in front of the TV and watch dirty movies." She gave her daughter a wicked
grin as she drew a deep puff on her Virginia Slim, tilted just slightly at an
angle.

"Right," Patty replied with a roll of her eyes, "Michelle will probably spend
the day watching those Sister Kim videos she's been getting in the mail."

"I don't know what's gotten into her," Grace replied with an exhale. "I
mean, Michelle has become so obsessed with this thing. The huge poster over
her bed of this Sister Kim was a bit much, but she's just grown more
possessed with each passing day. She never misses a webcast of her sermons,
and this constant watching of the videos over and over really concerns me.
She talks about quitting school to join this New Society Church in New
Orleans."

Patty placed her Saratoga between her lips as she gathered some papers off of
the kitchen table and put them into her briefcase. "Don't worry," she said
in an exhale, "it's just a phase, akin to wanting to run away and join the
circus. She'll get over it."

Grace couldn't let it rest as she followed her daughter to the door. "I'm as
pro-smoking as the next person," she continued, "but there's something
strange about Sister Kim. Who is she really? Why does she keep talking
about revolution?" Grace, deep in thought, brought her Virginia Slim up to
her lips for one last puff and then paused. "Why does she always wear
sunglasses?"

Patty put on a pair of shades and turned to her mother. "Perhaps it's part
of the mystique," she replied jokingly. "I'll see ya next week, Mom. And
don't you and Michelle watch any dirty movies without me!"

++++++++++++++++++++

Patty decided to pay a visit to the mall before heading down to D.C., hoping
that some new shipments of cigarettes had finally arrived. After spending
the weekend with her Mom in Baltimore, Patty knew that her "employers" would
be dying for a smoke when they saw her today. (The twins kiddingly referred
to her as "Patty the Provider.") When she walked into Charlie's Smoke Shop,
she was relieved to see him restocking his empty shelves. She expected the
aroma of his cigar to greet her nostrils upon entering the shop, but instead
she was surprised to see that Charlie, his back facing her, was smoking a
cigarette - something he rarely did.

"Good morning Charlie," she said with her normal spunk.

"Patty" he replied with his back still facing her, "how nice that you've come
today." He continued restocking the shelves. "What brings you here?"

Patty looked down at the holders and lighters in the glass counter, waiting
for Charlie to finish what he was doing. "I'm just on my way to D.C. and I
was really hoping that you had finally received a new shipment. The
President's daughters love my Saratogas." Charlie continued to calmly
restock the shelves without saying a word and keeping his back to Patty.
She'd never found him to be so quiet as he was today and so she sought to
make some conversation. "Have you ever seen anything like this where the
tobacco companies have literally stopped all shipments of cigarettes?"

"I can't say that I have," Charlie said as he crushed out his cigarette and
lit a fresh one. "But these are new times." Charlie turned to face Patty,
revealing to her his kaleidoscope eyes.

"My God, Charlie," Patty asked with a start, "what's wrong with your eyes?
Are you feeling okay."

As Charlie brought the cigarette up to his lips, he replied, "I feel
wonderful." He took a deep drag and exhaled a cloud of smoke into Patty's
face. She stood stunned, feeling a tingling sensation throughout her body as
the mutation took hold of her.

"I think you'll like this recent shipment of Saratogas," Charlie said blankly
as he slowly handed Patty a cigarette. As if in a trance, she put it between
her lips and leaned forward to accept Charlie's flame. When she sucked in a
full puff, she felt like a tidal wave was moving through her. Never before
had she felt so much stimulation from a single puff.

"This is incredible," she replied with her eyes closed while a wall of smoke
rolled up her face. When she opened her eyes, she knew that something was
different - that she had gone through some sort of transformation. She
didn't know why, but she felt an obsessive compulsion to make other people
smoke.

"Charlie," she asked softly between puffs, "what's happening?"

"Have you ever heard of Sister Kim?"

Charlie didn't have to say another word. Patty understood.

"My Mom and Michelle are both home today," she said quietly, lost in the
rapture of the Transformation.

"Then we'll make sure to send them a care package," Charlie replied as he
reached for a carton of Virginia Slims 100s and Capri 120s off of the shelf.
He then placed a carton of Saratoga Menthols on the counter for Patty.
"Don't you have something to do in Washington?" he asked.

Sacramento, California
The Hilton Convention Center
6:30 a.m. PST

Kim and Angela arrived at the convention center early for their interview
with Diane Hunt. But before going on live, there was one person Kim was
eager to meet; an "Anti" who would be the first symbolic sacrifice to the
Revolution.

+++++++++++++++++++

Finding the room number to Sandra Lopez was easy. An exhale from Kim and the
desk clerk was more than happy to oblige. As Sandra would be the guest of
honor at the No-Butts Anti-Smoking Society's convention that morning, Kim
felt it imperative that she pay her respects to the recipient of California's
"Freedom From Smoke" award before attending the opening reception downstairs.

When Sandra answered the door to Kim and Angela's knock, she didn't recognize
the two Asian Americans at all. "Yes," she asked the two mysterious girls in
sunglasses, "can I help you?"

Angela grabbed her by the lapels of the sport coat she was wearing and
forcibly pushed her back from the door. "Get the fuck in there," she said
with a snarl. Sandra, shocked and frightened at what was happening, started
to sit on the edge of the bed when Angela yelled, "Stand up when Sister Kim
enters a room!"

"Sister Kim!" Sandra replied with more anger than fear now. "What the hell
are you doing in my room?"

At 5'8", Sandra was nearly two inches taller than Kim and knew she was
stronger. She could take this girl out with one punch to the jaw. What a
story that would make to her supporters downstairs. Sandra was already
thinking about how she would tell it in her speech at the reception when Kim
interrupted her train of thought.

"The girl has courage," Kim said with a wry smile to Angela. "I like that.
You'll make a good lieutenant in my army." Angela nodded as she pulled out a
Virginia Slim to give to Kim.

"Don't even think about lighting that," Sandra said defiantly. "I know who
you are and you're wasting your time here. Now get out before I call
security." Sandra picked up the phone and was ready to dial.

"So much strength, Sandra," Kim said softly as she took the cigarette from
Angela, "but it's misdirected. Let me help you by showing you the power of
the smoke." Kim put the cigarette between her lips as Angela flicked her
lighter and brought the flame to the tip of Kim's 120. "Join me," Kim said
with smoke pouring out of her mouth.

"That's it," Sandra said and she reached down to dial "911." But before she
could finish the dial, Kim blew an immense cloud of smoke towards Sandra
which covered her entire head. Immediately the "Anti" dropped the receiver
as she began to cough uncontrollably. Kim moved closer to her, pulling hard
on her Virginia Slim which burned brightly, and engulfed Sandra's face in
another exhale. By this time, the coughing had subsided and Sandra's eyes
began to glaze over. "Isn't it good," Kim whispered as she brought the
cigarette once more to her mouth, took a powerful puff, and placed her lips
on Sandra's, blowing the smoke into her body.

Angela was growing excited as she watched Kim transform this "Anti" into a
devout follower. As she lit one of her Benson and Hedges, her hand moved
down into her pants and she began to stroke her clit.

Sandra's eyes had begun to shimmer rapidly as Kim brought the half-smoked 120
up to Sandra's lips. "Breathe in," she commanded softly and Sandra did so,
feeling the full power of the smoke. Within seconds her eyes were like
kaleidoscopes. "You belong to me now," Kim said as she placed the cigarette
between Sandra's fingers.

"Sister Kim," Angela whimpered, her pants crumpled around her ankles now and
her index and middle finger rapidly masturbating her pussy, "may I?" she
asked with a nod towards Sandra.

"Of course," Kim replied and took a seat to watch the fun.

Angela sat Sandra on the edge of the bed and pulled out a fresh cigarette.
"You're definitely a Benson and Hedges girl," she said breathlessly. Sandra
made no reply and was oblivious to the fact that Angela was pulling off her
pants and panties. All Sandra did was bring the cigarette up to her mouth
repeatedly, taking a puff and breathing it in deeply. She had a smile on her
face and an expression that said she was experiencing a revelation. She
never knew smoking could be so wonderful. As Angela's tongue bathed her
pussy in smoke and saliva, Sandra felt a powerful force suddenly gush from
between her legs that evoked a loud groan from deep within her chest. She
felt weak, but she couldn't stop smoking and she lit a fresh cigarette as
Angela continued to suck her off, working her towards a second orgasm.

"I can see you two are busy," Kim said with a smile as she got up from her
chair to leave. "If you'll excuse me, I have to go start a revolution."

Sacramento, California
The Hilton Convention Center
6:55 a.m. PST

Diane and Bill waited in a small hotel conference room for Kim's arrival. As
Kim demanded, the interview would go on live at 10 am on the East Coast and 7
am on the West Coast. Kellar was uncomfortable having the terms of the
interview dictated to ABC, but he was so eager to crucify this charlatan that
he was willing to do anything to get her in front of a camera. He knew that
Sister Kim was now a force to be reckoned with in this fight between smokers
and non-smokers. Her meteoric rise to fame represented all of the
pro-smoking sentiment left in the country, and he was determined to snuff her
influence out once and for all. And to make sure that Diane Hunt asked the
right questions, he would anchor Good Morning America this day.

Though the interview was scheduled to go for only 10 minutes, Bill the
cameraman was uneasy with the whole situation. "Diane," he asked while they
waited for Kim to arrive, "are you sure this is a good idea?"

"What do you mean," Diane replied while reading over her notes.

"I've been hearing some strange things from my sources at Philip Morris;
something about a special shipment today. I'm getting the same rumors from
people at RJR Reynolds and Brown and Williamson."

Diane looked up at him in disbelief. "You have spies at all the tobacco
companies?"

"We have to keep an eye on them. You can't trust these smokers," Bill said
with conviction.

Diane might have been moving into the "Antis" camp, but Bill's attitude still
pissed her off. "Will you cut it out with all the anti-smoking crap? Let's
just get this crucifixion over with." Diane turned her attention back to her
notes. "God, some days I really hate this job." After a moment of silence,
Diane asked Bill, "Why is Kellar so anti-smoking, anyway?"

Bill stopped what he was doing. "Don't you know?" Diane looked up from her
notes waiting for an answer. "His daughter died of lung cancer. She was a
two-pack a day smoker. He tried to get her to quit, but she refused." Bill
went back to checking the equipment and said softly, "She was only 27."

Diane was stunned. Now it made sense to her. Kellar's remorse over his
daughter's death was the drive for exposing Sister Kim.

Diane was about to ask Bill another question when Kim walked into the room
and sat down on a large cushioned chair which had a standing ashtray by its
side. She placed a pack of mutated Virginia Slims 120's on the arm of the
chair without saying a word, but she clearly saw Diane's attention drawn to
the cigarettes.

Bill cued Diane that Peter was about to introduce her.

"In the spotlight this morning is our continuing coverage of the Government's
anti-smoking campaign and the opposition that has arisen to fight it. As ABC
Nightly News reported recently, a young Asian American woman in New Orleans
who goes by the name of Sister Kim has been preaching the controversial
message that Americans should ignore the government and embrace what she
calls the power and beauty of smoking. This morning, our own Diane Hunt has
finally secured an interview with Sister Kim, whose real name is Kim Lee, and
files this live report for us. Diane?"

"Peter, I'm here live with 17 year old Sister Kim Lee in Sacramento,
California where ironically just a few floors below us the No-Butts
Anti-Smoking Society is about to open their national convention. As we've
reported, she preaches a pro-smoking philosophy. Ms. Lee, can you tell us,
please, what it is you hope to accomplish through this opposition to the
government's anti-smoking efforts?"

"My mission is simple, really," Kim said as she pulled out a Virginia Slim
and lit it. "It's to spread the word about the power of smoking and the
immense pleasure that it can bring."

Diane was unsure how to react. She didn't expect Kim would light a cigarette
on camera, nor did she expect that she would find the act so enticing to
watch. She suddenly felt all the strength she had gained over the last two
months from not smoking drain away. She tried to keep her composure as she
asked, "Over the last few months you have gathered thousands - some say
hundreds of thousands - of followers all over the country. What is it about
your message that so many people find attractive?"

"People are attracted to smoking for different reasons: social, sexual,
rebelliousness - but I truly believe that it is the spirituality of my
message that has struck a chord with my followers. I show people the
mystical aspects of smoking: the embracement of its power and sharing that
power with others. It's a bonding together, one that can bring unity and
togetherness of the human spirit. I have no doubt that the world would be a
more peaceful place if everyone smoked."

"But at what cost?" Diane asked with as much conviction as she could muster
while fighting a strong desire to pull Kim's cigarette out of her hand and
place it in her own mouth. "Certainly you know of the health risks that
smoking entails. Aren't you really just setting the stage for a cataclysmic
health crisis down the road when smokers begin to develop cancer and other
smoking related diseases?"

"Such a narrow minded question from a person who obviously lives in
darkness," Kim replied disdainfully, wisps of smoke emanating from her
nostrils. "You're a smoker, aren't you?"

Diane was caught off-guard by the question, unsure of how to answer it.
"Former," she replied uneasily.

"Recently, I'd say, by the look of your face," Kim added. "You can't keep
your eyes off my cigarette." Kim paused and with a devious look on her face
added, "I believe you want to smoke."

It was as if Kim could read Diane's mind. There was something incredibly
attractive about this woman; an aura that drew Diane to her, flaming her
desire to take up the 20 year old habit once again.

"Ms. Lee, my former smoking is hardly at issue here. Would you please tell
us..."

Kim cut her off. "I think it's directly at issue, Ms. Hunt. You see, we're
fighting a revolution here." Kim took off her sunglasses, revealing for the
first time to America her kaleidoscope eyes, and said with a smile, "It's
something I like to call the Kaleidoscope Revolution. Wouldn't you like to
be a part of it?"

Diane almost gasped when she saw Kim's eyes for the first time. She tried to
regain her composure, but was clearly becoming more uncomfortable and
replied, "No thanks, I don't smoke anymore."

"But you will," Kim replied slowly. "Soon everyone will." Kim brought the
cigarette to her lips and hollowed her cheeks in a hard puff. Before Diane
could ask another question, Kim shot out a stream that engulfed her head in a
thick cloud of smoke. As a former smoker, it didn't take much to get Diane's
lungs acclimated once again to the nicotine as she instinctively breathed in
Kim's second-hand smoke. She felt a tingling sensation in her chest and
didn't even try to fight the cravings which had now returned with a
vengeance. She knew that she had to have a cigarette right at that moment.

Off-camera, Bill asked, "Diane, are you okay? We're on live."

Kim handed her a fresh Virginia Slim and Diane leaned over to touch the tip
to the flame that Kim offered. She puffed hard on it and inhaled the smoke
deep into her lungs. After holding the smoke for several seconds, feeling
the Transformation, she tilted her head upwards and blew a stream of smoke
above Kim's head. "Welcome to the New Society," Kim said softly with a
smile.

"Diane! We're on live," Bill said impatiently.

Diane turned to the camera, her eyes shimmering brightly.

"Oh my God, Diane, what's happened to you?"

"Peter," she said into the lens, "this will be my last report for ABC News.
I understand the power of the smoke now. This is Diane Hunt, latest convert
to the Kaleidoscope Revolution."

Diane then got up from her chair and walked towards Bill behind the camera
which jiggled and fell to the floor, landing at an angle towards Kim that
made her appear larger than life as she slowly smoked her cigarette staring
into space, her eyes shining brightly. In the background a struggle could be
heard between Bill and Diane, and then all went quiet before the camera feed
went black.

Peter had an expression of shock on his face and could only barely mouth the
words, "We'll be back in a moment."
