violence in this story. However, it may be offensive to some readers in the
sense that this story describes what may be considered the extreme smoking
habit of a partially fictional minor.)
An hour or so later Jenny, Sabrina, and Mike headed off toward Kitsap Mall.
Jenny and Sabrina in Sabrina's truck and Mike in his car.
Jenny lit a cigarette as soon as they got into the car, as did Sabrina.
Jenny was trying to, recently, inhale directly from her cigarettes. Rather
than inhaling into her mouth then into her lungs, she was trying to take in
the smoke like taking a breath. This would usually cause a burning
sensation and be a lot more harsh than a normal drag. It was pure smoke,
rather than the combination of air and smoke she took in with a normal drag.
Perhaps it even had the capacity to be called `smoke inhalation', not
unlike when people died of `smoke inhalation' in a house fire. Regardless,
Jenny had been trying this more and more, whenever the thought occurred to
her. It was a much more potent drag.
She took a medium size drag directly into her lungs from the cigarette and
smiled as it made her throat burn.
"Jenny?," Sabrina said, bringing Jenny out of her state of experimentation.
   "Yeah?"
"How much did you smoke yesterday?"
As if to illustrate the point, Jenny double-pumped her current cigarette
and shrugged.
"Come on, you know how much."
Jenny trimmed her ash out the window.
   "About four and half packs."
Sabrina took on an astonished expression.
"Damn. That's amazing," Sabrina said, pausing to take a drag off of her
own cigarette, "You're gonna' have to cut down, you know that, don't you?"
"No," Jenny said quietly, but defiantly.
   "You don't think so, huh?"
   "Nope."
"Okay, let me ask you something though."
   "Go ahead."
"Why do you smoke so much?"
   Jenny thought for a moment.
"It makes me feel good-really good. And bad. Especially in the morning,
but, someday, when I'm old enough to buy my own cigarettes, I'm never going
to not smoke."
   "I don't understand," Sabrina replied.
"I want to smoke all the time."
"You smoke all the time now."
"No, I mean I want to ALWAYS have a cigarette. I wish I could just breathe
the smoke in all the time."
   Sabrina shook her head.
   "You're weird, kiddo."
Jenny's expression turned to one of hurt. She turned away from Sabrina and
took a drag.
Sabrina figured that Jenny was mad at her and didn't pursue the issue
further.

It wasn't until they arrived at the mall that Sabrina realized Jenny was
crying. Sabrina leaned over toward her.
   "Jen, I'm sorry."
   Jenny continued to cry.
"Hey," Sabrina said sympathetically, rubbing her hand up and down Jenny's
back.
   Jenny looked up at Sabrina.
"You're one of the only people who doesn't give me any trouble about my
smoking. Why are you doing it now?," Jenny said through a haze of tears.
"I'm just worried about you. I'm not saying you shouldn't smoke at all but
if you keep up like you are you'll be in pretty bad shape by the time you're
my age."
   "I don't care. I like it."
Sabrina shrugged and at that moment she made her decision about the whole
thing.
"Okay. From now on, you can smoke as much as you want when you're around
me. No more bothering you about it."
"Really?," Jenny asked, a pleased smile growing on her face.
"Sure. You already smoke, so who am I to say how much, right?"
"Thanks Sabrina," Jenny said, taking a final drag off of her cigarette and
crushing it out in the ashtray of the truck.
   "You're welcome."
Sabrina turned to get out of the car.
"I love you, Sabrina," Jenny said, softly.
Sabrina turned her head back toward Jenny.
"I love you too, you little chimney. Now let's go buy some clothes."
   "Okay."

The two girls made their way through every store in the mall that Jenny
could check out clothes in. Mike wandered in and out while Jenny, (and
Sabrina), tried on clothes, occasionally giving his opinion. They would try
on stuff in a store, buy anything that they had decided they wanted, and go
outside for a cigarette. Then they would come back in, go to another store,
do the clothes thing again, and then go back outside for a cigarette.
It wasn't long before the money Jenny had brought from her mother for
clothes was nearly half gone.

The two of them sat on a bench outside the `Bon Marche' entrance to the
mall. Smoking.
"Four outfits, so far. That's pretty good. And you can mix em' up, make
different outfits."
   "Yeah. I like em'."
"Good. After all, you've gotta' wear em'," Sabrina said with a smile.
"Yep. That's a nice sweater you got too."
Sabrina nodded but her attention was somewhere else.
Jenny followed her gaze and saw what she was looking at. There was a boy
sitting on the sidewalk near the mall entrance, watching them. He looked
like he was about Jenny's age.
"Do you know him?," Jenny asked.
"No. I think he's watching you."
   Jenny shook her head.
   "No he isn't."
   "I think he is."
   "Why?"
"I think he's watching you smoke."
   "Really?"
"Yep," Sabrina said with a grin.
   "Kinda' like Mike."
   "What?"
"Mike was watching me smoke last night."
   Sabrina looked intrigued.
   "He was, huh?"
"Yeah. Not looking right at me but kind of out of the corner of his eye."
   Sabrina smiled.
"Mike likes girls who smoke, Jen."
   "I thought so."
   "Why do you say that?"
"He said that I looked `attractive' when I smoke. He said that he wasn't
being `fresh' with me but that a lot of guys would chase me because of
that."
"Oh. Well, looks like he was right. That boy over there is definitely
watching you."

The next couple hours of shop, buy, smoke, shop, buy, smoke, left Jenny
with a grand total 6 outfits, two pairs of shoes, and a lot of plastic bags.
Mike left them about an hour before they finished so that he could go to
work. Jenny noticed him taking the time to watch both of them smoke, as
well as any other girls around that were smoking.
Sabrina opened up the tool/storage box in the back of the truck with her
key and stowed all of their stuff away. The two of them got in the truck
and completed the ritual lighting up.
Driving off, Sabrina spoke and smoked.
   "We're gonna' go someplace special."
Jenny's interest was immediately piqued, she took a drag.
   "Where?"
"I'm not going to tell you yet."
   "Why?"
"Well, let's just say that I think you'll like it."
Jenny was a bit disappointed but let it go. She put her cigarette to her
lips and took a drag. Still holding it to her lips, she exhaled and took
another drag. Then she did it again. She made a sound not unlike the sound
someone makes when having a favorite dessert, barely audible.
   "-mmmm-"
"Did you say something?," Sabrina asked.
   Jenny shook her head.

Sabrina soon had Jenny lost. In no time, Jenny had no idea what part of or
even what town they were in. When they pulled up in front of a place called
`Treasured Vices', Jenny had no idea what to make of it.
"Come on, we're here," Sabrina said, a sly smirk on her face.
Jenny reached over toward the truck's ashtray to put her cigarette out.
"You don't have to put it out."
   "What do you mean?"
   "Just come with me."
Jenny shrugged, took a drag, and got out of the truck.

Sabrina walked up to the door, cigarette in hand, and opened it. She held
the door open for Jenny, cigarette also in hand, and followed her in.

Jenny walked in, took a look around, and smiled. It was a tobacco shop.
Jenny had seen a couple in the malls but she'd never been in one like this.
It had a smoky haze in the air and the walls were lined with every kind of
cigarette she'd ever seen and many more that she hadn't. Plus, there were
pipes, lighters, chewing tobacco, and lots of cigars.
   "Hi, Mr. Lamont," Sabrina said.
Jenny turned and looked at the guy behind the counter. She hid her
cigarette behind her back really quick, just in case he was gonna' say
something about her being too young or smoking in his shop. He could get in
trouble if the police figured he was selling cigarettes to her. The man was
big, tall, and intimidating. Jenny would put the cigarette out in a second
if he asked her to.
   "How are you, Ms. Sabrina?"
   "Good thanks."
   "Who's your partner?"
   "That's Jenny."
He looked over at her and smiled.
"You don't have to hide it, Jenny. You can smoke in here."
   Jenny was surprised.
"Won't you get in trouble with the police if---"
"Nope. Don't you worry about it."
That was good enough for her. Double-pump.
   "I'm Bill, Jenny. Your, uh-"
   "Cousin," Sabrina added.
"-cousin here insists on calling me `Mr. Lamont' though."
   Jenny smiled.
   "Hi Bill."
With that, Jenny turned and started looking around, leaving Sabrina to talk
to Mr. Lamont, er, Bill.

Jenny slowly made her way down the wall of cigarettes. There were all
kinds of them. Alpine, American, Barclay, Belair, Benson & Hedges,
Cambridge, Camel, Carlton, Chesterfield, Doral, Exact, Gold Coast, Kent,
Kool, Lark, Malibu, Marlboro, Misty, Now, Old Gold, Pall Mall, Prime, and on
and on. There were the regular length, the 100's, the 120's-and nothing
longer. Jenny was sure she had read something about longer cigarettes
somewhere. She was considering where she might have gotten the information
from when `Bill' spoke to her.
   "Jenny?"
   "Yes?"
"I understand you smoke quite a bit?"
Jenny steeled herself for some sort of complaining or pestering.
   "Yes."
"Your cousin says you smoke Virginia Slims Lights 120s, is that right?"
Jenny wasn't sure where this was going but she was glad that she wasn't
being picked on about it.
"Yes," she said, taking a long drag and walking over to his counter.
"Well, I think you might want to try a full flavor cigarette. It might
give you what you're not getting from those lights."
   "I don't understand. Sorry."
"Light cigarettes. They're a bit less strong than full flavor. You should
try something else."
"I don't know what else there is. I picked the Virginia Slims because they
were longer and because Sabrina smokes them."
"Well, I'll give you a couple suggestions then," he said, standing up
straight and holding his chin, "you could try the More 120s or, uh, the
Carlton 120s, or the Tall 120s. Those are all full flavor and they're all
120s. What do you think?"
"I don't know which one to choose."
"Well, I'll tell you what, I'll give you a pack of each, my treat."
   Jenny smiled.
   "Really?"
"Yes, but you can't tell anyone."
   "Okay."
"And, when you get old enough, you have to come buy your cigarettes from me
sometimes."
   "Okay."
"It's a deal then," he smiled, and started to say something else to Sabrina
when Jenny spoke up.
   "Bill?"
   "Hmmm?"
"Do you have any of the longer cigarettes?"
"I'm not sure I get you."
"I read somewhere that some people smoke really long cigarettes. Do you
have some of those?"
   "164s?"
   "Is that what they're called?"
   "I suppose it is."
   "Do you have any?"
"Well, not in packs like you buy the ones you buy now."
   "Why?"
"I make them by hand because I don't have any that long to sell."
   "Oh."
"Did you want to try one?"
Her expression was that of anticipation of ecstacy.
   "Oh yes."
"It doesn't have a filter, so I'll let you use one of these disposable
holders here," he rummaged through some stuff and pulled out a couple inch
long cigarette holder. He set it on the counter and went through a door
behind the counter into another room.
Bill emerged about a minute later with a cigarette that was another half
longer than the ones she smoked now. He placed one end of the cigarette
into the holder and handed it to Jenny.
"There you go. Let me give you a light, you might have a hard time getting
the thing lit with it being as long as it is."
Jenny brought the holder up to her lips and waited for Bill to touch the
flame of his lighter to the tip of the cigarette. He did and she drew in on
it as long and as deep as she could. When she inhaled she suddenly felt
VERY funny. Not sick funny but good funny. She took another drag.
"Thank you Bill. This is great."
   She took another drag.
   Bill looked at Sabrina.
"She sure took to that quick, didn't she?"
   Sabrina smiled and nodded
