This is Part 2 of 3 of Maria's Story:

John's overseas business trip had gone well. He called Maria every night,
although due to the time difference, John was always exhausted from the
grueling day's negotiations while it was early morning for Maria who seemed
barely coherent. The overseas connections were poor which didn't help matters.
Finally, Thursday night, John called from Hawaii, a stopover on his Pacific
Rim return, to say he would not be in until 6:05 PM Friday EST.  Tina answered
the phone and asked "Should we cancel the Peterson Dinner, you know it's at
6:30!". John said he could still make it, that is, if Tina could pick him up
at the airport and take him straight to the restaurant and "have Maria waiting
there to meet the Peterson's in case we're late". John heard the familiar
click, click of Tina's lighter and asked, "by the way, how is the "Pistachio"
program going?". Tina recognized this as a code phrase for her assignment to
teach Maria to smoke, at least socially, while John was gone. She laughed and
said "John, I think you are going to be pleasantly surprised. Maria likes
smoking more then Pistachios!".  John's flight arrived on schedule and Tina
wasted no time taxiing John to the restaurant. When they pulled up, John
spotted Maria waiting outside, and immediately noticed a leather cigarette
case in her hand. She was looking good, wearing a sleeveless, black sequined
party dress which Tina had loaned her. John was relieved the Peterson's had
not arrived and thanked Tina for the ride. Maria, looking out for the
Peterson's Limo had not recognized John's arrival. He approached her from the
side just as she was trying to light a cigarette.  John cupped his hands to
block the wind and said "need a light stranger?". Maria took the offer,
pulling hard on the cigarette, before noticing it was John. A moment later she
recognized him and aggressively wrapped her arms around him, giving him a big,
full mouth kiss, as she was glad to see him. John could taste the cool menthol
on her lips and tongue, as she was not done exhaling the smoke when she lip
locked him, something he had never experienced kissing Maria before. She then
stood back, taking a second, much longer drag, and commented dryly "Well, this
is what four days with Tina has done to me" as she boastfully exhaled a long
stream of smoke toward the evening sky. John smiled sheepishly saying "It's an
improvement! Maybe you won't be so uptight this time with the Peterson's,
huh?".  A few minutes later a long black stretch limo pulled up to the curb.
John took Maria's hand and, in a more serious tone, told her "look, I really
appreciate this, you know the social smoking and all. If you can make the
Peterson's feel comfortable, just tonight, I think I'll get my promotion and
all these long trips and hard work can start paying off for us". Maria nodded
as she graciously approached the limo, escorting Liz from the back, and
helping her with her mink shaw which had fallen slightly from one shoulder.
Inside, the matradee asked the standard "Smoking or Non" question, just like
last time.  Everyone's eyes focused on Maria, waiting for a response. Maria
promptly replied "Smoking please" this time. The matradee said, "I'm sorry but
there's a 20 minute wait for smoking. I can take you right away in Non, if
that's OK?". John wondered if the three Nuns and their Priest friend from the
other restaurant were back there. Everyone's eyes again focused on Maria. She
did not hesitate replying "I think we'll wait in the lounge until you have
something in the smoking section.". I was pleased to see Maria offering Liz a
light as we sat down at the bar. They seemed to be hitting it off quite well
this time. Meanwhile, Brock had a million questions about my Hong Kong sales
pitch.

I continued to look over at Maria and Liz, still not able to get over the
sight of seeing Maria smoke. Her mannerisms and style were just like her
sister Tina's, and it was clear that she genuinely enjoyed smoking. She
appeared very at ease, almost proud. She exuded self confidence while smoking
and, I hate to admit it, seemed much sexier too.  In fact, if it weren't for
the scar on her left wrist, a permanent reminder of a bicycle accident when
she was 11, I would swear that I was looking at her sister Tina sitting at the
bar stool. And, for whatever reason, seeing her smoke seemed somehow natural
to her, as if this was who she really was and that she had somehow discovered
her true self.
