This is Part 3 of 3 of Maria's Story:

The merriment in the lounge was soon interrupted by an almost ear piercing
"The Peterson party, the Peterson party, your table is now ready" intruding
over the speaker. Maria took a drag from her almost finished cigarette, then
taking a second even longer drag, crushed it out in the ash tray on the bar.
As the four of them headed toward the front desk John noticed Maria, exhaling
a long stream of smoke from her just extinguished cigarette, and smiled
approvingly. For her part, Maria was still talking to Liz, John overhearing
Liz saying something to the effect "oh honey, you know all men are jerks, take
Brock for example..." but chose not to intrude in their dialogue, as the tone
seemed harmless and they were both laughing and carrying on like old school
chums.

After being seated and placing their orders, Maria and Liz headed off to the
powder room while Brock got caught up on the details of John's Sales trip. The
dinner finally arrived and all agreed that the Stonehearth's Prime Rib and
"SECRET" specialty soup were "five star" all the way. Brock pulled out a
cigar and offered one to John. John, knowing that Brock only smokes Havana
Imperials cleverly replied "Brock, I would but I only smoke Havana Imperials".
Brock laughed in his deep throaty way saying "then your in luck John, these
are the finest Fidel ever made". John, not much of a smoker, could get by
socially with a few stiff Brandies to num his buds. John, sitting back while
savoring his cigar, noticed Maria was fairing far better in the smoking
department with Liz, almost keeping pace with Liz's chain smoking and actually
doing so with an almost seasoned grace and style, much like Tina. John was
actually enjoying himself, though he was sometimes uncomfortable with some of
Brock's off-color jokes, constant back slapping, and roaring laughter. Two
hours and 7 drinks later the disk jockey announced Keriokee would begin in the
Green Room in 5 minutes. Maria, quite out of character, had convinced Liz to
accompany her in a duet of an old Janis Joplin classic. Maria took Liz's hand
and picked up her ever present cigarette case and headed toward the Green
Room. Brock told John, "This I got to see" as they followed close behind.
After several renditions of "Take a little Piece of my Heart now Baby" Liz did
a solo of Helen Reddy's "Angie Baby" that sounded almost professional. Maybe
the rumors John had heard at work about Liz, 20 years younger then Brock, were
true. Rumor had it that Liz was a Vegas Show girl and that Brock had met her
at a Sales Convention. Whatever the circumstances they seemed like warm,
genuine people after all and John had not enjoyed himself so much since his
collage days. He began to see his career and indeed his wife in a whole new
light of renewed optimism and enthusiasm. John even embarrassed himself with
Brock performing Old Blue Eye's "New York, New York" and George Thourogood's
"Bad to the Bone". Fortunately, Brock offered to give them a lift home in his
chauffeured limousine after the evening.

The next morning John got up around noon and managed to stumble downstairs. He
remembered little of arriving home and had slept late to overcome a serious
combination of jet lag and hangover. He noticed a carton of Salem 100's on the
kitchen counter and thought Tina must have stayed over. He asked Maria about
them, "No John, those are mine. Tina dropped your bags off here last night and
went home" as she casually took out a pack, packed it several times against
her wrist, and began unstripping the cellophane. Although John had enjoyed
seeing Maria smoke the night before with the Peterson's he had never thought
Maria would continue, as she had been so anti-smoking in the past. John sat
down at the table as Maria lit her cigarette and then freshened up her coffee.
John smiled as Maria joined him at the table, taking a deep, long drag, and
asking "...so, what are you staring at John?". John just took her hand and
said "My beautiful wife who was a knockout with the Peterson's last night".
Moments later the phone rang, it was Brock's secretary asking if John could
meet Brock at work Sunday at 3:00 PM. This could only mean one thing, John
was going to be offered the Regional Sales Manager position. Brock always met
alone with the chosen candidate prior to announcing the selection. After
John, almost mumbling with restrained joy, agreed to the date and got off the
phone, Maria asked "well John, do you mind me smoking, I mean at home, on a
regular basis?". John smiled at her and saying "No more then I mind you eating
Pistachios, at home, on a regular basis. Besides, I think you look sexy
smoking, and you obviously enjoy them.". Maria smiled, took a deep drag, and
said, "I was hoping you'd say that". Without a word spoken, Maria picked up
her cigarette case and lighter, took John's hand, and headed back upstairs.
THE END
