Chapter Two - The Capri Years

When I returned to work after helping my friend move, I found myself
becoming more and more attracted to a girl at work. When I decided to
ask her out, I knew I'd have to switch back to being a nonsmoker. Again,
this was not a problem for me! We began dating regularly, to the point
of being boyfriend & girlfriend. In the fall, she went away to college,
but fortunately it was the same school I had attended (and planned to
return to). While she was away, I still retained my nonsmoker status.

I recall one night at work, when I was wandering through the dining area,
I spotted something in an ashtray that was too slim to be a cigarette
butt. [As a fetishist, I was always on the lookout for my favorite
brands, always scanning the ground for discarded butts, as well as in
ashtrays.] Upon closer inspection, I realized that it WAS a cigarette
butt! Believe it or not, I had dreams of smoking a cigarette slimmer
that a VS or a More! What I had discovered was that someone had come out
with an ultra-slim cigarette: Capri! Over the next week or so, I had
seen several people smoking Capri-- both men and women. I knew I had to
have one! I had to find out if smoking a superslim cigarette was all I
had dreamed it could be. Yet, I remained a nonsmoker, faithful to my
girlfriend.

On one of my regular visits to her at school, I found out something that
would change my life forever! She revealed to me that she had smoked
during a 2- or 3-month rebellious period in high school! It was at this
time that I told her that I had smoked, and had quit before we started
dating. I also remember telling her that I had always been attracted to
smokers, but I don't think she realized the depth of my interests.

A few months had passed, and my girlfriend came home for the weekend. I
had picked her up at her house, and on the way back to my new townhouse
(which I shared with 2 other guys from work), we passed a Capri billboard
["Introducing the world's slimmest cigarette"] that was near my house.
She mentioned how cute those superslim cigarettes were. Naturally, I
agreed! I asked her what brand she had smoked (when she smoked), and she
listed 3 brands: Virginia Slims Lights, Marlboro Lights, and the "cute
ones" [as she called them], but mostly VS. When she mentioned Marlboro
Lights, my heart sunk. But the thought of her with a VS or Capri quickly
made up for it! I decided to continue my investigation. I asked her
whether she smoked regular or menthol, and she replied that she didn't
know! My follow-up question asked about the color of the stripes on the
Virginia Slims pack-- green or brown? "Green." Menthol! Something else
we had in common!

Wait a second-- she had smoked Capri before, yet they were just
introduced! There was no way she could have smoked Capri in high school!
My questioning continued. I asked her, "when did you have a Capri?"
She then admitted that she would occasionally bum a cigarette while she
was drinking at a party, and that a friend of a friend had Capris at one
party. My girlfriend was still smoking! I don't think I need to explain
how happy I was at that moment. This announcement also explained the
Marlboro Lights, as the two smokers on her dorm floor smoked them.

This meant one thing: it would be OK for me to smoke again. I now had a
mission-- to see my girlfriend smoke a long, slim cigarette.

Another week or two had passed, and in the meantime, I managed to swipe a
half-pack of VS Menthol Lights from my roommate's girlfriend [she was a
little on the heavy side, but at least she had great taste in
cigarettes]. I then went to visit my girlfriend again at school. I
smoked a few of the VS Menthol Lights on the way there, then stashed the
pack in the car. After arriving, I found out that her roommate wasn't
too happy about me being there every week or two. Plan "B" sprung into
action. I decided to get a hotel room for the night. We packed a few
things of hers, threw them in the car, and off we went.

She wanted to pick up some wine coolers, so we headed for the liquor
store. My plan raced through my mind, and also other areas of my body!
I was no longer in control-- my fetish had taken over! I asked, "should
I pick up some cigarettes?", to which she replied, "no, that's OK." I
persisted. "Are you sure? I kinda wanted to try the 'cute ones'."
After a little hesitation, she responded. "Well, if you want to." Plan
"B" was in full swing. At the liquor store, I placed the six-pack of
wine coolers on the counter, and proudly stated, "and a pack of Capri
Menthol." We hit a snag. "Sorry, we don't carry those." Disappointed,
I paid for the drinks and headed back to the car.

"They didn't have Capris," I told her. She didn't seem too upset. As we
headed toward the hotel, I told her I would try again at a gas station
near the hotel. When we got there, I asked her what I should get if they
didn't have Capri. "Ummm... Virginia Slims." Good answer. I went
inside and asked for the Capris. Luck was on my side. The clerk placed
one pack on the counter and I proceeded to pay for them. I remember the
clerk asking what the deal was with those cigarettes-- he must have been
selling a lot of them! I replied that they were supposed to be real
slim, and that my girlfriend wanted to try them. With the transaction
complete, I grabbed a book of matches from the counter and headed back to
the car, hormones at full throttle. I gave the sleek pack and matches to
my girlfriend, who placed them into her coat pocket.

We got to the room and started to settle in. Since it was late, we
immediately got ready for bed. I should note that my girlfriend was a
virgin at the time, so I knew we weren't going to have sex. However, we
did partake in almost every other kind of oral and manual stimulation, so
I was ready for some fun. [We started having intercourse about a year
after we started dating.]

I got on the bed, and as if on cue, she retrieved the cigarettes and
matches from her coat pocket. She expertly rapped the pack against her
palm to pack the tobacco. I was transfixed on her and her Capris. She
next grabbed the thin blue strip and peeled away the top of the
cellophane, leaving the bottom intact. One more step to go. As she
flipped open the lid, the shimmering gold foil was visible. Grasping the
foil in her fingers, she pulled it free, exposing the ultra-slim
cigarettes. She carefully removed one as she sat on the bed next to me.
Closing the lid, she laid the pack on the table next to the bed and
grabbed the matches. She certainly knew what she was doing!

Placing the Capri between her lips, she pulled a match from the book,
turned the matchbook over, and struck. The match came to life, ready to
ignite the tobacco and produce the smoke that we all long to see. Laying
the matchbook down, she brought her left index and middle fingers to her
lips to steady the cigarette as she lit it. I watched in utter amazement
as she brought the flame to the tip of her cigarette. The flame made
contact, and she began to take a small puff to start the festivities. By
now, I had an erection to end all erections. It was straining against my
underwear, with the head peeking out from the waistband. My girlfriend
removed the Capri from her lips with her left hand as her right hand
shook the match till it was out. This was followed by the smallest of
exhales. I'm sure she was just as nervous as I was. We were sharing
something that until recently was a private matter. Now it was my turn.
I carefully took the Capri from her, and took my first drag. This was
the ultimate. Sharing the world's slimmest cigarette with my best friend
and lover. It was everything I thought it would be. It surpassed all my
previous smoking experiences.

For the next few minutes, we took turns taking drags from the Capri
menthol. Sometimes I would hold it and place it to her lips for her to
enjoy, and sometimes she would return the favor. I was savoring the
menthol smoke before exhaling, and I noticed she didn't inhale too
deeply, if at all. I asked if she was inhaling, and she indicated she
was. I think she inhaled more deeply after that.

I took advantage of the time by picking up the pack and examining it. It
was probably the classiest pack I had ever seen-- so sleek, so inviting.
The off-white color was accented by the striking Oriental-inspired
design in blue and green. The Capri name was written in gold foil, in a
modern-looking typeface. Near the bottom of the pack were the words
"Trim & Light - Menthol". My curiosity caused me to open the pack to get
a better look at its contents. Inside were two rows of thin cigarettes
in perfect alignment; the back row had ten, the front row now with nine.
This was different than the 7-6-7 layout I was used to seeing. The two
rows did not take up the entire depth of the wider, yet thinner pack. A
spacer separated the back row of cigarettes from the back of the pack,
and protected the fragile contents. From this angle, I could also see
the gold foil that surrounded the Capris. Upon closer examination, I
noticed it was covered with tiny words-- all saying "Capri", in the same
typeface as the name on the outside of the pack. This was one attractive
looking package.

When we finished our first Capri, I needed to take care of some matters
that were soon approaching the point of no return. We began our own form
of lovemaking, consisting of all foreplay and no intercourse. I would
usually satisfy her needs first, since we were trying to stay safe. When
it came time for me to be pleasured, I propped the pillow against the
headboard and sat up in bed. My girlfriend began to perform her magic.
I couldn't help but notice the pack of Capri on the table next to me.
Without thinking, I picked up the pack and slid one of the superslims
from the front row. I placed the pack back on the table without closing
the lid, so I could clearly see the cigarettes. Grabbing the matches, I
quickly freed one and lit it. With the stimulation being administered by
my girlfriend, I had to strain to concentrate on lighting the Capri. The
combination of her skills and the smoke from my new favorite cigarettes
was too much to handle. Not one second sooner than I inhaled the first
drag of my Capri, I lost all control of my orgasm and released an ample
load of come into my girlfriend's mouth. It was one of the most
satisfying moments I had ever experienced.

Lying there in total exhaustion, I had to rest for a minute before I
could take another drag from the Capri. We ended up sharing that one as
well. Too tired for more, we decided to turn in for the night. The next
morning, I had to drive her back to her dorm. It was a weekday, and she
had classes to attend. I returned to the hotel, and brought the pack of
VS Menthol Lights in from the car. I proceeded to smoke a VS, followed
by a Capri, all while masturbating. I had no problem coming while
smoking the Capri.

We ended up staying in her dorm room the second night I was there, so
there was no repeat performance right away. When I was about to leave, I
offered her the pack of Capri Menthol 100s. She refused, saying that she
wouldn't smoke them often enough to keep a pack around. We had talked
about being occasional smokers in the past, never smoking enough to
consider ourselves "regular smokers". I believe it was at this time that
I explained to her my opinions on brand selection. I said that I felt
if a woman was going to smoke, it should be a feminine brand. Something
with style. I remember specifically mentioning two brands by name:
Virginia Slims and Capri. My intent was to steer her away from the
Marlboro Lights that were readily available to her. She still declined
to take them, so I was able to enjoy them on the drive home.

Over the next week, I had finished off the remainder of our first pack of
Capri. I would smoke 2 or 3 Capris per day, usually in my car, or late
at night at home. One of my roommates was a smoker, so I could easily
hide my smoking by enjoying a Capri in my loft bedroom, which overlooked
the family room where he smoked.

I gradually started seeing more women smoking Capri, and fewer men. Once
they began advertising in magazines with the line "the slimmest cigarette
known to woman," I think it scared many of the men off. Until that time,
they probably didn't know they were targeted towards females. At work, I
found myself hanging around the smoking section a lot more, especially
when there was a beautiful Capri smoker to watch.

A few weeks after our first cigarette together, my girlfriend cam home
for the weekend. Although I had been smoking Capris since that night, I
knew I needed to pick up a fresh pack for us. Before I went to pick her
up, I opened the new pack and placed it next to the ashtray I had taken
from work. I deliberately placed them in plain sight on the end table in
the family room, hoping that when she saw them, she would want one.
Didn't happen. The next day, she met me at work, and we sat in a booth
and chatted. I told her I had bought a new pack of the "cute ones", and
she said she noticed them at my house. I'm at least grateful she
noticed!

Over the next month or so, I continued smoking Capri on my own. I would
stop at a gas station every couple of days to pick up a candy bar or
something, but also to check the counter displays. Whenever there was an
offer for 2-for-1, I would pick some up. Whenever there was a coupon for
a free pack in a magazine, I would use it. I even once picked up a pack
of Capri regulars, just to give them a try. I ended up tossing them out
by the time I was home [again, too harsh].

Whenever my girlfriend visited, I would offer her a Capri. She always
declined, and I smoked one in front of her only once. After several
offers, she finally decided to take me up on it. This marked the
beginning of our smoking together.

The following fall, I returned to school at the same college my
girlfriend attended. We started smoking together more and more. It
eventually got to the point where she would keep her own pack of Capri
Menthol in her dorm room, and smoke them when she went out, and in the
smokers' room down the hall. I smoked in that room with her on one or
two occasions. When one of her nonsmoker friends came in, they were
surprised to see me smoking. I asked if it was because of the Capri, and
she said, "no, it's just weird to see you smoking!" I felt a little more
at ease about being seen with a feminine brand.

Now that my girlfriend was smoking more regularly, I always picked up two
packs of Capri. One went into my glove compartment, and one went with
her, to be stashed in the top drawer of her dorm room dresser. We even
started smoking them in public places. Most notably, we smoked them at a
local pizza place, a multi-level restaurant. We would sit downstairs,
smoking our Capris while working on our programming assignments. I don't
think she ever noticed me staring every time she took a drag. Watching
her smoke in public was the biggest turn-on! Afterwards, we'd head back
to the computer lab to finish up, then have a Capri in the car on the way
home.

In all my years of buying cigarettes, I never felt uncomfortable buying
feminine brands. The only nervousness I felt was the fear of being
discovered by someone I knew. To date, this has never happened. Anytime
I am at a place where cigarettes are sold, I tend to hang around a little
longer than I need to, just to be able to spot women buying their
cigarettes, and finding out what brands they purchase. One particular
purchase stands out in my mind: I stopped at a convenience store across
the street from a women's dorm. On my way in, I passed two female
students coming out. I noticed at least one had two packs of cigarettes
in her hand. Performing my normal brand check, I saw that the packs were
Capris! Unfortunately, I never saw what the other girl bought.
Coincidentally, a young couple followed me into the mini-mart. They were
behind me in line at the register. After purchasing my own two packs of
Capri, I overheard the guy say "Capri Menthol" to his girlfriend,
indicating the brand I bought. Moments later, I realized why he noticed.
She asked for the same brand! Back in my car, I waited till they came
out. She was an attractive blonde, driving a white Chevette. When they
left, I took the same route home as they did, until she turned into a
sorority house driveway. To this day I still remember the license plate!
[I haven't seen it since.] This double-sighting raced through my mind
on the way home. I pictured the couple sharing their Capris, much like
we did, and the female student letting her roommate try her ultra-slim
cigarettes.

While in college, whenever I was at the library, I spent my spare time
looking up articles about Capri and Virginia Slims, in much the same way
I do now on the Internet. I used a business periodicals CD-ROM and a
hardbound index [Predicast]. I found a December, 1986 article in
Advertising Age, announcing the introduction of Capri. Another article,
in a packaging trade magazine, covered the unique packaging of the
delicate cigarettes.
