Here is part 2 of 3 of Monica's Story:

After several awkward flicks, I offered to light it for her. Becky
defiantly refused my offer "Really mom, I think I need to learn how to do
this myself, at least for one week". Somehow, she managed to light the
VS120 without actually inhaling. After noticing that she had not taken her
first drag in several minutes I reminded Becky  ".. you know, part of this
deal is you have to try". Becky nodded knowingly and brought the cigarette
to her lips and proceeded to draw the smoke directly into her lungs,
followed predictably by several caughs. Becky looked at me, still
coughing, "I don't think I can do this mom, I tried it a year ago and the
same thing happened". I laughed and said it was because no one had ever
bothered to show you how. I demonstrated with my cigarette, first drawing
the smoke smoothly into my mouth, then opening my mouth slightly while
inhaling. Becky watched intensely lamenting "Oh, so THAT'S how it's done".
She then took a guarded drag, following the correct technique this time,
and held the smoke for several seconds. A sheepish grin came over her face
as she blew a steady stream of smoke exclaiming "Wow, that's much nicer".
As the evening passed, I gave her one cigarette for every five I smoked,
figuring four cigarettes a day is a good starting point. Feeling in a
festive mood , and because I did not feel like cooking, I decided to order
a pizza. Becky seemed transfixed by the whole experience but still had to
be reminded to drag. Becky had just lit her second cigarette when the
pizza delivery boy showed up. As it turned out, he happened to be the
older brother of one of her girlfriends, Kathy, and I could tell Becky was
soaking up the attention, exuding an air of poise and confidence while
doing her best to hold the long  cigarette like a lady. Later that evening
I happened to pass by my bedroom door and noticed Becky standing in front
of the full length mirror posing while coyly holding her VS120 with her
wrist noticeably bent. I said nothing of the incident, however it reminded
me of  myself blossoming at that age; I quietly returned to the family
room. The following day, Saturday, Becky continued to hold up her end of
the deal, smoking six cigarettes. Her skill with the lighter was improving
and I was pleased to see that her draws were getting longer and deeper. I
no longer had to remind her to take a drag, as it was now becoming second
nature to her. She only once half heartedly mentioned "winning the bet".
By the third morning when Becky came down for breakfast I noticed she was
wearing nail polish and a little touch of make up. Though I have
encouraged her to take more pride in her appearance she had shown little
interest in the past. I told her she looked nice as I deliberately slid my
ash tray to a spot on the table between us, a reminder that the bet was
still on. I was surprised when Becky reacted with "oh, thanks mom" as she
reflexively reached for the open pack and lighter on the table.
That morning at the breakfast table was the first time she had smoked
without mentioning the "bet" or drawing attention to the fact that she was
smoking. We talked and laughed about things that had happened at her
school and at my school in my youth but never discussed smoking or the
bet. Becky actually smoked three cigarettes in just under two hours! We
were beginning to feel that closeness I had always longed for, just
sitting there, enjoying each other's company. When I mentioned I had some
shopping to do at the mall, Becky uncharacteristically offered to come
along.
After an hour of shopping I sat down at a bench for a cigarette break.
Becky looked at me
expectantly but I did not offer her one. (END OF PART 2 OF 3)
