Patti's story
Part 2

The next morning Virginia and Patti went to a convenience store.  Virginia
filled the car with gasoline, and told Patti to stay in the car when she went
in to pay.  She came out, they went home, and to Patti's studies.  When
Virginia lit up one of her Marlboro 100's, Patti asked if she could try
smoking again.  When she reached for her mother's cigarette, Virginia said,
"No, I do not want you to try smoking my cigarette again."

Patti looked disappointed as Virginia walked to get her purse, took something
out and walked back to Patti.  She put down the object and Patti looked at
it.

Virginia said, "This is a package of Carltons.  They are much milder than my
cigarettes.  I think you can smoke these without coughing."  She showed Patti
how to remove the cellophane on the top of the pack.  "Just like a gum
wrapper,"  she said.  Then she flipped the box open, and took out the
loose piece of foil.  She pulled out a Carlton and handed it to Patti.  She
said, "Put the filter between your lips, and when I put the fire to the end
of it, suck in."  Patti followed these instructions and when the end was lit,
blew out a puff of smoke.  Virginia instructed her, "Now, take a sip, open
your mouth, and breathe in."  Patti did this without coughing.  As Virginia
had not told her to exhale, she exhaled throuhg her nose, and two small
streams came out.  Virginia then said, "You could blow it out of your mouth,
but the nose works OK too."  Patti then took a slightly larger drag, inhaled,
exhaled through her lips in a small stream, smiled and said, "This is OK.  I
think I like this."  She excperimented with larger drags until the cigaretee
was finished.

That afternoon when she was sitting at the table, she asked her mother if she
could have another Carlton.

Her mother said, "Yes, those are for you.  Smoke all you want, but be
careful.  We don't want for you to set the house on fire.  If you don't want
to smoke anymore, throw the cigarettees away and we son't talk about it
anymore.  If you want more, let ne know and I'll get them for you.  If you
get dizzy or feel sick, I want you to stop right then."

Patti never got dizzy or sick.

Patti continued to smoke 2 or 3 cigarettes a day for a week and after a week
said, "Mommy, I am almost out of Carltons.  Would you get me some more?"

Virginia said, "We'll go to the store tomorrow morning."

The next morning Patti smoked her laast Carlton.  In the afternoon, she said,
"Mommy, did you get me some Carltons?"

Virginia went to her purse and said, "No, I got you something different this
time.  Here are some Marlboro Lights.  I think you can handle them.  They
are still milder than mine and you can get a lot more smoke from them."  She
handed Patti the pack.

Patti opened the pack, tipped out a Marlboro Light, lit it, blew out a laarge
plume of smoke, and grinned.  She then took a medium size drqag, inhaled it,
her shoulders rose, and she exhaled a long stream from her lips.  She said,
"This is great, these cigarettes really do give you a lot of smoke."

That Saturday her father came home off the road.  He was only home two or
three days a month.  He really did love driving his truck, and seeing the
country.  Although Virginia missed him, she did not worry about his being
unfaithful to her, as she had enough confidence in her femininity to know he
was hers, and she his.

Patti's father was watching TV in the living room when Patti came in with a
cigarette burning in her hand.  She thought nothing of it and by  now felt
comfortable with the cigarette.

Bill called out, "Virginia, do you know our daughter is smoking?"   Virginia
came into the room with her Marlboro 100, took a deep drag, did a beautiful
snap inhale, and said, "Yes, Patti started smoking last week.  She was
curious and started asking questions, so I let her taste one of mine.  She
liked it so much I didn't think it would hurt her to smoke a little
sometimes.  Besides, I know how you like to see me smoke, so I thought it
might be exciting for you so see your daughter smoke also."
