Sin in the City karriejj@hotmail.com Part 6: The early desert sun filled the suite and woke Jennifer from her coma like sleep. She lay on top of the sheets shivering trying to think and remember the previous night. The clock told her it was only 6:45. She had unfairly only slept for 2 short hours. Jennifer managed to slip off the bed and walked to the bathroom. She relieved her aching bladder and put on a hotel robe and walked a jagged line back towards the window. She pulled the drapes closed and the room turned nearly pitch black. She sat at the bar and allowed her eyes to adjust. Her head pounded and her eyes burned. She reached across the bar and grabbed Billies pack of Marlboro's. She placed one of the short kings in her lips, lit the tip and inhaled deeply. The stronger cigarette made her mouth water and the nicotine began to work its wonders. She exhaled lightly as she surveyed the room. Billie was gone, as were her things. Jennifer didn't remember her leaving and she was glad to have found that she left her cigarettes. She drew again, this time exhaling out her nose, bathing her chest in the thick clouds. Karrie lay motionless on the bed in a fetal position with her back to Jennifer. Jennifer got up and walked to the back of the bar and opened the refrigerator and took out a can of Sprite. She cracked the seal and began pouring the cold bubbly liquid down her throat. Her body eagerly accepted the offering. She was fighting hard to suppress the thing that her body was really craving. The coke. Jennifer's reservation for doing the coke was now being put to the test. Her body and mind had always seemed to 'hunger' for the things that were so bad for her, and she realized this. In her pre-teens, she struggled with her weight due to an intense craving for chocolate. When she first smoked, her body begged for it and she happily fed the appetite. Once she tried marijuana, she thoroughly enjoyed it and continued to use it regularly. And now that she had introduced cocaine to her system, it begged for more. Jennifer drew hard on the shrinking cigarette and glanced towards Karrie. "Still sleeping," she noted. Why she felt guilty about doing a little more this morning seemed to be the question she wrestled with even though she knew the answer. Deep down she knew that it was OK to have done it while they partied, but to do it just because her body was craving it was a whole other ballgame. She took a final drag and crushed out the cigarette. She quickly grabbed the small baggie and the credit card and began to reform a pile of the coke. Once the pile was 'taller', she stuck a corner of the credit card in and began scooping it back into the baggie. Her hands shook as she resisted the urge to do some instantly. Instead, she filled the baggie with all she could and sealed it. There were enough remnants on the bar to do a healthy line she told her self. She quickly swiped the card back and forth, forming two lines. She again glanced to Karrie, then quickly picked up the rolled bill and snorted them back. She wiped the rest of the bar clean with the sleeve of her robe and waited. She lit another cigarette and began to enjoy the sensation that began creeping through her body. She took the baggie with her to the bathroom and turned on the shower. The room began filling with steam and mixed with her cigarette smoke. She undressed and took a final drag, tossing the butt into the toilet. "A little bit more," she told herself as she unsealed the small baggie. She poked her pinkie into the baggie and scooped out a small pile with her nail. She held it under her nose and snorted it back, then repeated the process for the other nostril. She gazed at herself in the mirror and her smile turned south. Her hair was a birds nest, her makeup smeared and unsightly. "The shower will help," she told herself and climbed in. The return flight was uneventful and somber. Everyone had seemed to have had their fill of Vegas. Karrie and Jennifer kept mostly to themselves, either cat napping or reading magazines. When Karrie had finally woken up, she sleepily asked about Billie. Jennifer told her she must have left sometime after they had fallen asleep. She then explained that the coke was missing and assumed Billie had taken it. Karrie thought this was no big deal as she was going to throw the rest of it out anyway. As they got off the plane and walked down the concourse, Jennifer walked lightly, being careful not to break open the small baggie that rested in her sock. Jennifer and Karrie pulled in front of the music store at 1:15. They were both exhausted. They kissed good bye and made plans for the next day. Karrie walked into the store lugging her luggage as Jennifer sped away, eager to nap. Jessica greeted Karrie with a warm smile at first, and then noted her disposition. "Ewww, looks like you partied a bit too much, huh?" she asked. "Just a bit," Karrie said, forcing a smile. "I'm going to be upstairs sleeping this off, can you handle things for a bit longer?" she asked. "Of course," Jessica smiled. Karrie turned and began walking towards the apartment. "Oh wait, dropped this off for you this morning." Jessica called out after her. Karrie paused and turned, and accepted the yellow manila envelope Jessica held out. "Thanks Jess, see you after a bit." Karrie said and trudged up the stairs to her apartment. Karrie sat on her bed in a long T-shirt and panties. She sat indian style as she examined the envelope. Her name was neatly written in black ink across the top. She unfastened the metal clip and tore at the gum sealed crease and peered into the envelope. A single page of paper sat innocently inside. She pulled it out and studied it. The paper was a heavy linen weave, very professional looking. She recoiled a bit as she recognized the hand writing immediately. It was from Bonnie Kelly and the room began spinning as she began reading. Dearest Karrie, I hope this letter finds you in good health, happy, and prosperous. Four years ago I performed a favor for you. You've done a wonderful job with the store and have obviously invested your money wisely. All favors, however, need to be re-paid and the time has come for you to do just that. In the next few days you will be contacted by a young lady with further instructions. It would be wise of you to do as instructed. Failure to comply will bring dire consequences to those close to you. I hope you and Jennifer enjoyed your little vacation to Las Vegas. It's a fun town isn't it? I'll be in touch. Fondly, Bonnie Kelly The letter was sealed with a lipstick kiss, Crimson. Any hopes for a nap were now squashed. Karrie quickly lit a cigarette and began pacing the apartment, trailing a steady cloud of smoke behind her. The End ** From the Author: Again, hope you all enjoyed the further adventures of Karrie. I am kind of sad to report that I only plan to do two more stories in this series and then that will be it for Karrie and Bonnie. I need some closure on these nifty characters. Send me your ideas on how to wrap up this saga! I'll truly take any advice you may give and try to incorporate your suggestions into the last stories. I'll wait until Nov. 30th, 2001 for your replies. Then I'll get busy finishing this up. Till then, Karrie. karriejj@hotmail.com |
