Writers Note---Those that enjoy a good science fiction story know that they need to suspend their beliefs of the real world and allow for the possibility of things that are out of the ordinary. You will need to do that when you read this story. With that being said, while the science fiction stuff is mostly a product of my imagination, many of the smoking scenes are in fact based on real encounters and sightings that I've experienced throughout my life. Some have been modified to fit the context of the story but others remain mostly intact as they actually occurred. Lastly, when reading this I suggest that you pay attention to the timeline as it is critical to how you'll draw your conclusions over the story's ending. My email address is hotelcalifornia14@hotmail.com if you wish to discuss or comment on the story. I hope you have as much fun reading this as I did writing it. SISTERHOOD OF THE SMOKER BABES-THE SMOKING WAR CHRONICLES CHAPTER 16 - June 9, 2011 - First mission together Erin took to the twenty-first century extremely well. As you progress through life over a thirty year period, you don't really realize all the changes that take place. As you live through them, the changes are gradual and most you don't even notice, but if you jump over thirty years in one day, the changes are monumental. The world of 2011 was a lot different than the world Erin left behind in 1979. Things like the internet, cable TVi, and cell phones that are a staple in most of our lives today weren't even on the radar screen when Erin and I graduated in 1979. Simple everyday gadgets like microwaves, DVD players, central air conditioning, and mp3 players weren't around either. Some people may have been overwhelmed by all of this, but not Erin. She had a voracious curiosity about all of these things. She was fascinated by the modern day computer, which had come a long way from the primitive ones at our old high school that were DOS based and featured green block lettering on the monitors. "This is so cool!" she excitedly exclaimed as she clicked from internet site to internet site with a cigarette dangling from her mouth. Out of all the advances over the last thirty years however, one amazed Erin more than any of the others combined. Digital music players. When I showed her my IPod and told her it contained about 1500 songs a puzzled look crossed her face. "Ok, I know I've just traveled through time which is strange enough but now you're telling me this little thing has over a thousand songs on it?" she said this with a wry smile as she was finishing off a creamy exhale. I went over and kissed her, tasting her smoky breath. She gave me a look and we headed to the bedroom. "I have a confession to make," she said, shortly after we finished our love making and were just laying in bed smoking. "What's up?" "Remember that first day when I came out of school and saw you smoking?" she asked and I said I did. "Well, I really was shocked. I mean I knew who you were but I didn't really know you, but I had an image of who you were and stuff. Anyway, it wasn't like I wasn't attracted to smokers before, it didn't matter to me one way or another. But when I saw you smoking I instantly wanted to jump your bones." "Oh, so you were treating me as a sex object then, right?" "Shut up," she said, whacking my arm and grinning. Our vacation over, we arrived at RJT and were greeted by Cameron, Decker and David Moss, who was now handling Cray's administrative duties. Cameron and Erin sat down for a coffee and a smoke together while I spoke to Decker about some of the latest research the company was doing. Decker got a phone call and had to excuse himself. For about the tenth time over the last week, I thought about the girl who was the object of our upcoming mission. She was different than every one of my other missions. The girls from my other missions were all girls that I'd met in some encounter and in these encounters they'd rocked my world with their smoking. This girl did as well, but there was one difference. In whatever the situation was that I came upon these girls, I almost expected that they'd be smokers. Either their look, their background, or perhaps their lifestyle gave it away. When I saw them lighting up, or appearing somewhere in my life with a cigarette dangling from their fingers, they were just confirming what I already knew intuitively. But not this girl. I encountered her in July of 2009, almost two years before I knew of RJT's existence and it's plans to create a worldwide smoking addiction. I was attending the graduation party of my brother's niece with my mom, my brother and sister-in-law Chrissy, and their two kids. I'd been at Chrissy's brother Dan's house many times and gotten to know the family well so it was natural for me to be there. I need to be clear about one thing here. I'd been to many family functions with subsets of the people who were at this party. They were always a good time but never at any of the parties did I experience any kind of a major smoking sighting. I was not at all expecting anything on this day. It was a hot summer day when I arrived. Dan lived in a large house in the suburbs and had a spacious yard. Music was blaring over the stereo system which was set up near some large tents on the lawn. I caught up with some people I hadn't seen in awhile and spotted Dan and we started talking about the recent struggles of the Red Sox in their annual battles of supremacy with their arch rival, the New York Yankees. I had just mentioned something about the Sox recent trade of underperforming shortstop Julio Lugo when a female voice behind me said, "They traded Lugo! When did that happen?" I turned around and recognized a girl who was Chrissy's niece's best friend. The two girls had stayed with us one night a year earlier when we rented a beach house for a week. The girl joined our conversation for a few minutes and I was actually impressed with her knowledge of the players and baseball in general. The conversation lasted a few minutes and then I decided to mingle. As I walked into the back yard I heard someone behind me. "Hey Mike," a voice said. I turned around. "I was hoping you were going to be here!" she said, smiling and gave me a hug. "Alyssa, hey, congratulations!" I said to the girl of honor and gave her graduation gift to her. I talked to her for a bit, mostly about her college plans and about music. We shared a love for some 90's bands like the Gin Blossoms and Toad the Wet Sprocket. She mentioned that she was going to see Bon Jovi in a couple of weeks and how excited she was. "He puts on an awesome show," I said as we parted ways. I grabbed a drink out of the cooler and decided to head to the front of the house, over by the garage, to have a cigarette. I knew from previous parties at Dan's house that this was the unofficial designated smoking area. As I turned the corner of the house into the front yard however I got the shock of my life. I felt the blood rushing to my head. For a split second I thought my eyes, or brain was playing tricks on me. But they weren't. What I was seeing was completely real! Standing there in front of the garage and taking a very long exquisite drag from a cork tipped cigarette was Alyssa's best friend Katie Beckett! I was truly stunned. One of the things I've always prided myself on is that I can spot a girl smoker a million miles away. I usually never miss. But I had missed this one entirely. I'd met her a few times before and from the few times I'd met her, I'd concluded that Katie was a nice, clean cut kid. I knew she was an athlete; a good one in fact. Her name was always in the paper for basketball and I'd noticed she'd gotten some scholor-athlete award recently. Yet, there she was, doing a double pump in the visible presence of at least fifty adults and didn't seem to have a care in the world as to what anyone might think. Normally in this situation I go into fetish overdrive and find a way to extract information from a girl. I'm usually able to charm such details like how long they've been smoking and how much they smoke. But I was completely tongue tied. I did make small talk with her; I believe more stuff about the Red Sox, but none of the usual smoking dirt details that I'm usually able to extract. It didn't stop with that one cigarette, either. Over the course of three hours I'd see this girl smoking on at least six or seven more occasions. It almost seemed like she was flaunting her habit in front of a yard full of adults, some of who were in their sixties and seventies. What truly amazed me is that none of these adults said anything, at least outwardly, to Katie. As the day went on I realized that Katie Beckett and public smoking was about as natural as the sun rising in the morning! It happened that I ended up behind Katie in the food line under one of the tents. Her clothes were wreaking of smoke. I took my food and sat with my immediate family. Katie, on the other hand, sat on the front steps and lit up a cigarette and alternately smoked it while eating a meatball grinder she'd fixed for herself. The contrast of this multiple all-state athlete smoking while eating a meatball sandwich was playing havoc with my head. My mom and I happened to be leaving the party at the same time Katie was. As we were getting into our car I snuck one more look as Katie was getting into her Chevy Cobalt. She was in mid-dangle as she searched her pocket and pulled out her keys. As we pulled out of the driveway, Katie waved to us and pulled off. "That girl really smokes a loti, doesn't she?" my mom said. I immediately found a way to change the subject, not at all wanting to get into a discussion about Katie and her incessant smoking habit with my mom, of all people. |
