Smoke & Mirrors Part 15: The Phone Call: It had been a late night for Jill. After having her own needs satisfied, she had unceremoniously kicked Joe out of the apartment at about 2:30, preferring to have a restful night of sleep on her own. She was in a very deep sleep when she was awakened by the ringing telephone. With squinting eyes, she looked at the clock radio alarm. It showed 8:30 AM! She thought she was having a bad dream. Who the hell would be calling this early on a Sunday morning? She hurriedly ran to the telephone, which must have now rung eight times. "Hello, hello?" she said frantically. The voice on the other end of the line said in a rather calm and determined voice. "Hello, is Suzanne Leblanc there? This is her mother calling." Jill was taken aback. She paused a moment while she gathered her senses. "Just a moment please, I'll see if she's here," she said, trying to sound like she had not been sleeping. She knew that there was a good chance that Suzanne had spent the night at Phil's. Suzanne's bedroom door was still open, so she quickly walked over and looked in. Just as she thought, no Suzanne. So the sweet innocent Suzanne had stayed out all night drinking, and smoking and getting laid, she thought. If only her mother knew, she chuckled. She started to walk back to the phone when she saw her package of cigarettes on the table. She wickedly smiled to herself. She just might have a bit of fun with Mrs. Leblanc. "Mrs. Leblanc, this is Suzanne's roommate Jill." The sound of the lighter clicked loudly in the receiver, as Jill lit up. She made sure to pause long enough to exhale rather enthusiastically so that Mrs. Leblanc could here the whooshing sound from the exhale of the deep drag. Jill finally spoke. "She doesn't appear to be here right now. She must have gone out to get something at the store." she said slyly. Probably a dozen condoms or maybe she ran out of cigarettes she jokingly thought to herself. Mrs. Leblanc was not stupid. She knew almost immediately that Jill had just lit a cigarette. She was taken aback. She had remembered that she had helped Suzanne fill out her application, and was sure she had indicated no smoking as her preference. "Oh, I see." Mrs. Leblanc said nervously. "Could you have her call me when as soon as she gets in, please?" Jill noticeably paused and inhaled deeply on the cigarette again. Exhaling as she spoke she said, "Yes, I'll tell her as soon as I see her. She shouldn't be long." She took another deliberate drag, again making sure that Mrs. Leblanc would hear her exhaling the smoke. "Okay, thanks. I appreciate your help- Goodbye." The phone clicked before Jill could even reply. Jill smiled to herself. I'm guessing Mrs. Leblanc and Suzanne have a lot to talk about when she gets home. This was going to be fun, she thought. I wonder how Ms. Goodie Two Shoes would get out of this one. Mrs. Leblanc was very upset. Where was Suzanne? Why wasn't she at home? She could swear that she had heard Jill light up a cigarette while she was talking to her on the phone. She was sure that she heard her smoking, if that was possible. How come her roommate was smoking in a non-smoking apartment? And smoking first thing in the morning, like a real smoker. And why hadn't Suzanne complained about the fact that her roommate smoked? She remembered how Suzanne had spoken so gushingly about her roommate. It was then that she recalled that Suzanne's voice had sounded strange when she had last talked to her. Her mind was whirling. Surely, Suzanne hadn't started smoking? Not "her" daughter. No one in their family smoked. Suzanne's was a good girl. Always had been. It just wasn't possible. She would have a serious talk with the "young" Suzanne. If she were smoking she would soon put a stop to it. Catholic girls just don't smoke, and certainly not if they were a daughter of hers. She hoped that her instincts weren't right. If they were, Suzanne was in big trouble. |
