Smoke & Mirrors Part 3: The Roommate: Suzanne waited until Phil was completely out of sight, and then knocked firmly on the door of the apartment. These were the strict orders that her new roommate Jill had dictated to her when they had first met. She had been assigned this two-bedroom apartment through the housing co-op at the college. It wasn't fancy, but it was furnished and had all the necessary amenities. When she had first met Jill, she had found her quite standoffish. She was very attractive, and knew it. Her clothes were expensive and she always wore some type of jewelry. She had a pair of diamond stud earrings that she always wore. Her short black hair was sculpted, and although a bit extreme, complemented her angular face. Her lips were full and her breasts were a perfect C. Her eyes were green and piercing. She was a woman and not a young girl. She had made it clear that she was a senior, and in no way would she be socializing with a mere freshman. Suzanne waited patiently, as she heard Jill's familiar voice, say "Just a second." After a few moments pause, the door slowly opened. "So what's up, Suzy Q?" Jill said in a rather demeaning tone. Suzanne hated when Jill called her that. As she entered the small room, something seemed odd. The room seemed a bit cool and the window was open in the living room. She noticed that the TV was on. "Oh not much, just getting back from a date." Suzanne said. "Really? A date? Well la tee dah! How did it go?" Jill was quick to respond. Jill's friendly attitude took Suzanne aback. Usually Jill hardly talked to her. "Well, he is really nice, and a senior. His name is Phil," she said with a proud air. "Great! Tell me all about it and don't leave out any of the details," Jill continued, showing unusual interest. Not wanting to discourage this unexpected friendliness, Suzanne recounted the events of the evening. When she came to the part about her first cigarette, she wondered whether she should share that part of the story. Still feeling the effects of the two beers, she thought she might take the chance. She felt quite proud of how daring she had been. She decided that honesty was the best policy and she might as well tell Jill all the details. "Well," she said slowly. "I did something rather naughty tonight. Something I thought that I would never do." "Tell me? Tell me?" Jill said with her voice peaked with interest. "Well-I smoked my first cigarette tonight." "No kidding?" Jill said smiling-"My goodness that's not the Suzy Q I know" "It's no big deal," Suzanne said blushing. "So, did you cough?" Jill chided while laughing. The old Jill was back. Suzanne felt challenged. "No way," she responded forcefully. "I bet you probably just puffed and didn't inhale," Jill continued her derision. Now the smile broadened on Suzanne's face as she replied proudly. "No you're wrong. I did inhale! Phil showed me." "Really?????- That's something that I would have loved to see," Jill said smiling. What a curious response, Suzanne thought. "Why is that, Jill?" "Well- since, this is a night for sharing secrets, let me share one with you." Jill said smirking. Jill started to recount her story. "I started smoking in the 10th grade. That was with Melissa, my best friend and partner in crime at school. She nagged and nagged me to try a cigarette. Ever since I had known Melissa, she had been a smoker. Melissa always looked like she was having so much fun when she smoked. She just loved her cigarettes. Intrigued and after some reluctance," she added, "I decided to give it a try. With a bit of practice, I really started to like smoking. I joined Melissa often to have those illicit cigarettes in the girl's bathroom. It took a little while, but in no time, it got better and better" she said with a look of true passion. "So you smoke too!" Suzanne interrupted. "Patience, patience, Suzy Q. Let me finish. How can I respond to that question?" she went on after pausing. "Well-yes- no- and yes." "Last summer after smoking for five years, I was dating this fellow named Bob. He was an uptight kind of guy, who hated smoking. So at that time, I decided to give in and quit for him. Well, late last summer Bob decides to go to another college, some business about a scholarship, yada yada. Last week when I arrived here, I felt like what the hell- Bob's not here and I missed that wonderful feeling of lighting up that first cigarette of the day with my coffee, so I decided to start up again. It was just great. I realized how much I had missed it. Unfortunately, when I enrolled in college, when my judgment was clouded, I checked the non-smoking box on my application. Sadly this resulted in me being saddled with a both a non-smoking room and a non-smoking room mate. So lately I have had to sneak around. "But, today," Jill said excitedly, "Things are looking up. I now have someone to smoke with!" she said cheerfully. "Whoa, there Jill!" Suzanne responded emphatically. "I don't smoke!" "Well, that maybe true, but you did smoke tonight, didn't you?" she said. "Well, yes, if you can call one cigarette smoking" Suzanne retorted. Jill took the lead. "I would really like to see whether this is all just a story, or whether you really know how to smoke. Show me!" see said with a challenging tone. Suzanne's eyes widened. "How can I do that? I don't have any cigarettes." Suzanne said defensively concerned about the turn in the conversation. A broad smile came across Jill's face, as she reached into her purse and slowly pulled out a nearly full pack of VS100's menthol lights and a pretty pink bic lighter. Suzanne smiled. "Oh! Now I know why you had the window open in the living room. You've been smoking in here, haven't you?" "I cannot tell a lie." Jill said smiling from ear to ear, "I'm guilty as charged." and then she laughed out loud. "Now come over here on the couch, and show me what you learned tonight. Personally, I would love a cigarette right now. You don't mind, do you?" Jill said not waiting for an answer. Suzanne wasn't sure what she should do next. This was an opportunity to become closer with her roommate. This was the friendliest that she has ever seen Jill. But then doubts started to fill her head. Would Jill make fun of her? After all, she had only really just smoked one cigarette with Phil. She didn't want to appear foolish. "What the heck," she thought to herself, as the two beers continued to give her courage. She would give it a try. She slowly walked over to the couch. Jill had already pulled the ashtray out from under the couch and placed it on the coffee table. Suzanne asked, "Where did you get that?" Jill smiled as she recounted how she had pilfered the ashtray from the campus coffee lounge. As Suzanne approached the couch, Jill smiled to herself. This was going to be a great year, being able to smoke in her room with her roommate. She would see to that. Ironically, what Jill had not shared with Suzanne, was that that once Melissa had gotten her addicted which of course had been Melissa's objective, Jill and Melissa had made a pact to get all of the girls in their group to start smoking. After Jill and Melissa had finished their program, their clique soon became known as the "Smoking Dolls." They had never failed. It wasn't enough to get them to just try smoking. To achieve their goal, the girls had to become totally hooked. Jill was about to do to Suzanne, what Melissa had done to her, and also what they had done to so many of those naïve impressionable girls at her school. She wondered if she had lost her touch. Could she remember the technique to get a beginner to bend their will and slowly lose control? This was going to be so much fun, she thought to herself. Just like the good old days. Nervously, Suzanne sat down beside Jill. Jill slowly picked up the white pack with the feminine green and turquoise stripes and deliberately shook loose two of the all white cigarettes halfway out of the pack. With a shit-eating grin, she extended the cigarettes to the unsuspecting Suzanne. This was going to be a piece of cake, like shooting fish in a barrel, she thought. After all they lived together. She knew that it wouldn't take long. She was doing Suzanne a favor, she told herself. She would teach Suzanne to enjoy smoking. Once she exerted her full influence, she would soon become a real smoker. One day Suzanne would thank her. She couldn't wait to start the process. Jill's finger remained gently poised on the wheel of the lighter. It wouldn't take long. It never did. Jill clicked the lighter and the yellow spark ignited the gas. The flame jumped to attention, casting a warm yellow glow on the freshman's face. Suzanne's eyes sparkled wide with astonishment. The unsuspecting moth would soon be in her flame. She would soon have that ever recurring cycle of need, then satisfaction, need, then satisfaction. Her will would be slowly bent, but she would eventually succumb. They always did. The relief of a deeply inhaled cigarette twenty times a day would soon be something that Suzy Q would be experiencing each and every day. She would get her up to pack a day eventually. That was the objective. |
