Part 5

The next morning at breakfast, silence and smoke hung thick in the air.  Most
of the smoke came from Tammy while most of the silence came from Jim's mom.
Both women had their cigarette packs on top of the table in easy reach.

Jim's lungs ached from the night before.  He felt a cough rising in his chest
and tried to suppress it to no avail.  He felt Tammy's hand come down on his
back as if she were trying to rub the soreness away from his lungs.

The look on his mother's face told him that she knew.  She looked
disappointed to the point of being disgusted.  At first he was bothered by
the guilt but the more he thought about it the more pissed off he became.

He thought of his smoking session with Tammy last night and how much he had
enjoyed it.  His mother wanted to deprive him of that pleasure and that
wasn't right.

Tammy gasped as Jim picked up her pack and placed a cigarette between his
lips in full sight of his mother.  He didn't stop there.  He lit and then he
inhaled deeply.  He looked his mom directly in the eye and exhaled.

"So what do you think Mom?"

"I think my little boy has become a man."
