Donna's story
Part 2/4

It had been the Monday after school was out.  Donna had finisher her junior
year.  Donna and some of her friends had made plans to gather at Jane's house
and hang out for the day.  When Donna got to Jane's house, Liz was already
there and Anita came soon after.  Donna said, "What are we going to do
today?"  Anita suggested going swimming.  Jane said go to the mall and hang
out.

Liz said, "Let's go get some cigarettes."

Anita said, "Are you crazy?  None of us smoke."

Liz said, "I have been curious about smoking for a while and want to try it.
Aren't you all curious about things like this too?"  Donna said she was.
Jane said maybe she was.  Anita said nothing.  Liz and Donna started for the
door and Jane and Anita followed.  Donna was the only one who had a car, so
they went to Donna's car, a 5 year old Chevrolet, and all got in with Donna
behind the steering wheel.  She said, "Where to?"

Liz suggested the King's Convenience Store.

When they got there, Donna got out, walked into the store, and with her heart
pounding said, "Marlboro Lights 100s please."

The clerk said, "Box or soft pack?"

Donna said, "Box please."

When she got back in the car, she said, "That was easy."

She drove them back to Jane's house, wnet inside and removed the cellophane
wrapper from the box.  She put it under her nose and sniffed.  "This smells
good," she said.  Then she opened the fliptop box, took off the small piece
of foil, and smelled again.  She thought that if a cigarette pack smelled
this good that would be reason enough for buying them.

Liz said, "Are we gonna sniff 'em or smoke 'em?"

Donna then took out four cigarettes and gave one to each girl and looked at
her own.  She said, "If we are going to smoke, we need some fire."  She went
into the kitchen and looked for matches, but did not find any.  She went past
the gas stove, turned on a burner and the flame came on.  She put the end of
the cigarette to the flame, and a little wisp of smoke came from the tip.
She then put the filter in her mouth and gently sucked on it.  A little smoke
went into her mouth which she blew out.  After doing this three times, the
whole tip of the cigarette was glowing, and she turned off the stove.

She walked back into the room where the other girls were and showed Liz how
to get a light from her cigarette.  Then Jane and then Anita.

The girls were puffing up a storm, none of them inhaling, so the room got
very smokey.  No one seemed to be getting dizzy or having any bad effects.

Then Barbara walked in.  Barbara was Jane's older sister, home from college,
between her freshman and sophomore year.  She was carrying a Virginia Slim.
She said, "This room sure is smokey, what's going on in here?"  As if she
couldn't tell.  She said, "Oh, I see you're smoking.  Let's see how you do
it."  She watched as each girl dragged and then blew out the smoke without
inhaling.  She grinned and said, "Oh, I see you're just beginners."  She then
sat on the floor in the middle of the girls and said "Watch this."  She then
put the filter tip of her Virginia Slim between her lips, her cheeks hollowed
deeply as she took a five second drag.  She then opened her mouth to show it
full of dense smoke, and inhaled it all deeply into her lungs.  She held it
there for about five seconds, and then exhaled a long stream.  She said,
"That is how to smoke."

The girls giggled at this, and then Liz did an almost perfect imitation of
Barbara and said, "This IS good."  Jane, Donna, and Anita stared at her.
Donna then took a medium size drag, inhaled and exhaled.  She thought, "This
is easy."  Then Anita took a drag, medium sized, opened her mouth, some smoke
came out, she inhaled and coughed.  Her face turned red and she coughed and
coughed again.  She gasped in a breath of fresh air, and her face turned
green.  She put the cigarette down in an ashtray and said, "I don't think I'm
going to do that anymore."
