Writers Note---Those that enjoy a good science fiction story know that they need to suspend their beliefs of the real world and allow for the possibility of things that are out of the ordinary. You will need to do that when you read this story. With that being said, while the science fiction stuff is mostly a product of my imagination, many of the smoking scenes are in fact based on real encounters and sightings that I've experienced throughout my life. Some have been modified to fit the context of the story but others remain mostly intact as they actually occurred. Lastly, when reading this I suggest that you pay attention to the timeline as it is critical to how you'll draw your conclusions over the story's ending. My email address is hotelcalifornia14@hotmail.com if you wish to discuss or comment on the story. I hope you have as much fun reading this as I did writing it. SISTERHOOD OF THE SMOKER BABES-THE SMOKING WAR CHRONICLES CHAPTER 2 -MARCH 28-2011 - A surprising job offer March twenty-eighth, two thousand and eleven. The day of my fiftieth birthday. The day my life changed irrevocably forever. There are many noteworthy days in history that are considered watershed moments. December 7, 1941, July 4, 1776, even October 28, 2004 for all you Red Sox fans out there. But March 28, 2011 beats all of them as far as I'm concerned. It didn't start out like it was going to be a life altering day. I had plans later that night to celebrate my birthday with my brother and a few friends but nothing big. Truth be told, I was hitting fifty. I was never one to be hung up with the whole age thing but I wasn't exactly screaming enthusiasm that I was hitting the big five-oh. It began with an email that morning, one that I almost deleted as spam but didn't for some reason. I opened it up. It was a reply to a job opportunity I'd submitted my resume for about a month earlier. The letter said that if I was still interested that I should call them and set up an appointment for an interview. Intrigued, I dialed the number. The interview was actually set up for three days later on the thirty-first. It was a job as a sales rep for a new company that was building wind turbines across the east coast. Green jobs had become the new hot industry, a byproduct of the Obama administration's efforts to lift the US economy out of the recession that had begun in 2007. While the economy had rebounded some, it still had a long way to go to reach pre-recession levels. I had been looking to make a career switch into the energy industry as I saw both opportunity and security because of the focus being given to alternative energy sources. I arrived for the interview at 10 am and was led to a waiting room and told that Sidney Cray, the sales manager, would be with me shortly. The place was impressive. It was a huge modernized office complex with expensive carpeting. I noticed some impressive art pieces on the wall and a large gold Chinese statue in the foyer when I walked in. Coming from the jewelry industry, I knew it was not imitation gold and worth a lot of bucks. Cray came out to meet me himself. He was perhaps a few years older than me but heavyset with glasses and a furrow mustache. He led me into his office which overlooked the harbor. "Big upgrade from the jewelry industry," I said to myself. We exchanged some pleasantries and sat down. He was silent for a moment while he scanned my resume. "Yup," he said as he read over a certain section. "yup, yup" he said a couple of more times. "Mike," he said to me. "I'm going to get right to the point. This isn't a job in the wind turbine industry. But when you hear what I have to say, I think you'll more than understand." "Okay," I said, "but the job posting online said it was for the new turbine development on the east coast." "Yes, I know, I know, but hear me out on this. If you're not interested once I've explained the position to you then you can walk away," Cray paused for a moment, "but I don't think you will." So I listened, and Sidney Cray began presenting to me one of the strangest and most unbelievable job descriptions that I'd ever heard. He explained to me that the company was called RJT and it was subsidized by the government. He also said that the position they were filling for was in the sales department but it was not a conventional sales job. And then what he said was truly mind boggling. RJT was prepared to pay me triple what I was earning at my current job. I was a bit skeptical. "So let me get this straight," I said. "You barely know me, other than my online application and based on this one interview you're going to pay me triple what I'm earning now." I got up as if to leave. Cray seemed unaffected by my reaction and kept talking. "We've been watching you for awhile, who your friends are, what you do for your hobbies, where you go online" I was a bit unnerved at the online part and sat down. "We feel you are ideal for this position. In fact, we're so confident in this that we'll even give you the equivalent of one year salary that you're making at your current job to try us out for a month. If it doesn't work out, you can walk away and keep the money. But when you finish hearing what I have to say, I doubt that you'll be going anywhere. "Mike, I'm going to get to the point." I had a feeling I was going to hear him say this a lot but he continued. "As I said earlier, we've been watching you awhile, especially where you go when you're online. So how is your smoking fetish these days?" I felt like I'd been hit with a ton of bricks. Yes, I'd been a closet fetisher for virtually my entire life but nobody knew about this except for a couple of people online that I talked to. I tried to play dumb but he continued. "No need denying it Mike, we know. I can name the sites you've gone to, the people you've talked to and even some of the girls you've dated throughout the years. As I said, we've been keeping an eye on you for a very long time." I was flabbergasted. "I really don't know what to say." "No need to worry," Cray smiled. "We are recruiting you BECAUSE of the fetish.' "WHAT?" I practically shouted in astonishment. "Like I said, don't worry my friend, what I have to say is going to change your life. Let's just say, with your talents and the scientific breakthroughs achieved within our company; we should all enjoy a mutually beneficial relationship for a very long time. "So Mike, now that we've gotten the formalities out of the way I'd like to get to the point" I had to admit, my interest was piqued, and Cray then told me the most incredible story I'd ever heard. Cray started by telling me that RJT Inc. was a subsidiary of one of the nation's leading tobacco companies. He explained that RJT was secretly formed by some members within the government in the sixties to protect both the tobacco industry's interests as well as some key politicians in both congress and the senate who were from the tobacco states such as North Carolina. During the mid-sixties, the surgeon general had come out with evidence that smoking was a huge health risk, which produced a huge back lash against smoking. "You know all this my friend," he said. "I'm not going to bore you with a history lesson. Suffice it to say that without RJT and the research we've done, the tobacco industry would have disappeared. Just think for a moment about all the tax revenue the government gets from addicted smokers and you'll understand what I mean. You're talking about entire social programs; education, low income housing, and yes - even health care. That money needs to come from somewhere. The government was scared but to come out openly and buck the public sentiment would have been political suicide. That's where we come in. "We hired genius level scientists to come up with a solution. Know what we found out Mike? I know you know this but I'll tell you anyway. Female smokers were the key to all of it. All throughout history, the allure of the female smoker is one of the strongest sexual temptations known to man. You know, Mike, the sexual power women have but the sexual power of a female smoker is magnified tenfold! We've done studies on this. Know what else we found? We found that female smokers tend to produce more female smokers. It's not the same with guys. If a guy smokes, maybe his friend does, maybe he doesn't. I won't lie to you that when you're growing up there isn't peer pressure with guys but with women it's off the charts. They just naturally want their friends to smoke and then proceed to damn well do everything in their power to get them to start." I was transfixed. My heart was beating fast, listening to this strange man telling me things I've known instinctively for a long time. "Mike, the tobacco industry has survived because in a nutshell we've kept the girls lighting up. We've identified a system to find key females who are most likely to start many other females who in turn start even more females." "I still not sure where I come in," I said. "It's simple," Cray said. "You have a network that's shown throughout your life as a fetisher. Mike, just about every girl that you've fetished over has this tendency to want to start others. It's your network that ultimately causes the ultimate goal of RJT to be realized." "And what is RJT's ultimate goal?" I asked him. "Worldwide smoking proliferation," Cray said, getting excited the way a mad scientist does. "Picture a world where 95% of the population smokes. No more smoking bans, no more shivering outside in freezing cold winters when lighting up. Think of how amazing it would be if you could smoke in the workplace again." "So you want me to what, just walk up to women and try to convince them to start smoking one by one? Use some sort of sales pitch and somehow my smoking fetish will get them to run out and start their friends until the whole world smokes?" I asked, still not understanding what my role was going to be in all of this. He chuckled. "Oh no, my friend, that would never work, we have a much easier and more efficient plan." Up until now this interview had been both intriguing and bizarre. But as it turned out, what I'd heard so far was actually mild compared to what Cray said next. "All you have to do is travel through time, inject certain girls from your past with a special serum we've created. That's all there is to it, really." I thought he was joking, I was actually waiting for him to say as much but he kept staring at me and had a deadpanned serious look on his face. "I mentioned our research was funded by the federal government. Back in the sixties, a scientist named Iva Von Schimmerman discovered the secret of the time travel continuum. Yes Mike, time travel is not only possible but we've achieved it, many times in fact. We can travel anywhere, both forwards and backwards. You will meet our other time traveler agents during your training.' "You mentioned a serum," I interrupted "Yes, GS4268, it's an extremely high concentrated does of nicotine mixed with glucose and some other additives. When delivered it produces a hellacious nicotine addiction. Now I'm not big on the chemistry thing, the only way I can explain it is that when it's administered, the subject becomes addicted instantly to nicotine as say someone who has smoked two packs a day for twenty years. It's actually amusing watching the subjects struggling with this before they figure out what they need to do to feel better. And they all do figure it out, some just take longer than the others, you'll see the films." Cray was clearly enjoying himself now, he was outwardly laughing, almost unable to control himself. "Mike, I bet you a king's ransom that if you really thought about it you know who your network is already. You've met them already in your life. You've had crushes on them, you've lusted after them, you've even had sex with some of them. But Mike, here's something you don't know. You need to start them all." "I need to what?!?" "You need to start them," He was animated now, even pounding his fists on the desk. "Don't you get it!! I figured you would by now. Your profile says you would have figured this out by now. YOU HAVE TO START THEM. IF YOU DON'T START THEM THEY NEVER START SMOKING, THINK ABOUT THAT FOR A MINUTE. ALL THOSE GIRLS YOU'VE FETISHED OVER, WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF THEY NEVER STARTED SMOKING? I'LL TELL YOU WHAT WOULD HAPPEN. THE WHOLE EASTERN PART OF THE US CAVES IN. FOR CHRISSAKES, I THINK BRITNEY SPEARS STARTED SMOKING BECAUSE OF YOUR GODDAMN NETWORK. YOUR NETWORK MIKE, THAT IS WHY YOU'RE HERE!" I was dumbfounded, but strangely intrigued. "So let me get this straight. You're telling me that all I need to do is travel around time, get these key girls to start smoking by using this serum thing and that's it." I hardly believed that I'd actually uttered such a sentence and was serious. "Well, that's not entirely it. Yes, those are the basics, but there are added benefits. When you go back you can assume the appearance and age that you were back then. So lets say you go back to 1976. You can be fifteen again if you want. Remember the girl you wanted to ask out but didn't? Ask her if you wish. Especially if she's a smoker and she's on your list. Now you can't change major things, it's against the rules because you could really screw things up if you did. But little things here and there, especially if it gets your girl to smoke, are not only recommended but encouraged. Remember, if you're in your fifteen year old body you still have your fifty year old brain with developed smoking fetish intact, so you can subtly push certain buttons on your targets." Cray said all of this without taking a breath. "There's one thing I don't get" I said. "I go back and inject person X with this GS4268. They become addicted to nicotine. Won't they just figure it out on their own?" "Some will right away and some will take longer." Cray said. "But it's not just about getting the girl to smoke. That's a big part of it of course but remember the importance of your network. They are all special girls. We need you to not only get them to smoke but get them so excited about smoking that they are almost obsessed with starting others. The more girls that one of your girls starts in 1984, say, the more those girls start and so forth. By increasing the number of girls that smoke all through time, it changes the culture and eventually renders the antismoking movement null and void. Perhaps if your web spreads out enough, then none of the bans and laws we see today ever happen!" He took a long pause and seemed to be searching for an affirmation from me. I had already decided halfway through his dissertation that there was no way I would ever not accept this offer. If everything Cray had said was true, and I had no reason to believe it wasn't, then this was one of the most amazing things that could ever happen in my life. "So can I say welcome aboard yet?" he asked finally. "You could have said it a hour ago," I said trying to conceal my excitement. We shook hands and a new chapter in my life had begun. |
